John, I actually like the format for these simple types of forgings. Seeing everything was nice. I like better your normal explanations and the videos you edit but I understand the time commitment. If you can incorporate more video of forging and cut down on your computer time, I think this would be a reasonable compromise. As I've said in the past, I really enjoy what you are teaching. Thanks

This was fun, and I like the design of the candle holder. I was watching this as I ate lunch, and I found myself eating faster and faster as the timer got closer to 20 minutes. 😄
Great go of it john! Really enjoyed this presentation format reminds me of when I first started into blacksmithing and went to monthly meetings at sofa (southern Ohio forge and anvil)

Good to see a 'behind the scenes' type video once in a while. Gives a more natural view of the work process, other than the time aspect of course. But obviously I still prefer the tutorals. Its also great to see you back on the black bear channel, but I certainly didn't mind the break, there's alot of back videos to catch up on, and I've been reading the online Blacksmiths Journals as well. That clock running really does change the game, doesn't it? That's why we see Master Bladesmiths fall apart on Forged In Fire so frequently... they go from careful and detail-oriented to rushed and stressed, and they fail spectacularly.
Usually by skipping important steps like normalize before hardening or not hardening at the right temp.
John, I really enjoyed this video, mostly because it was unedited and gave us a chance to see you work real time. You did a great job!
As a hobby smith, that was absolutely amazing to watch, like watching a Peter Ross video. I'm glad you showed how to set it up at the end, I was trying to figure why it looked the way it did and why it had some of the elements it did. Again, wonderful to see.

Once I get home from active duty orders I’m going to give this challenge a try. Kinda miss the UA-cam blacksmith challenges.
Really nice John. Its adds a different dimension watching you work under pressure. I thought I was the only one that miss placed tools and dropped the work item on the floor.
As I watch your excellent video's I find my constantly drawn to the other tools you have on the walls and hanging up around your work shop, I have a long way to go just in to go just in tool making alone. There's an adage here in Aus. 'he who has the most when he dies wins!!!' this goes for any hobby, sport or pastime.

You know, if your fire was a little hotter when you first started, it seemed to take a little while to see flames when the blower kicked on, you would've made it.

I watch a lot of your videos, almost nightly, and I enjoy your videos more than the rest. You have a great way of describing your work without being condescending or over explaining every detail. I have an old horseshoe forge and a 105# Haybud anvil. A few hammers and one pair of tongs. I like how you show things I can learn from as I go. Thank you for your great videos.

Heck John, if you take into account the 15 seconds it took to get it out of the tongs and the 20 seconds for the touchmark, you would have another 35 seconds to work. So in my judgement, you did it in 19 min, 30 seconds.

Love the video. Round is more aerodynamic than square. Round is faster down hill than square. I think you and I both win there. I am going to see if I have stock in the shop to try it. I don't think I can do 20 minutes, but I will try.

I really enjoyed watching this. I like that it shows that you do some of the same stuff I do. Drop stuff etc. Some days it seems like I get my exercise from picking up all the things I drop. But I never give up. I just finished my Black Bear Forge Binge watch! I really like the way you teach. Thanks for all you do.

John, since I discovered you on UA-cam I have very much enjoyed your videos and have tried out some of the projects you have demonstrated. Most recently (yesterday) I tried out the 14th centur candle holder. I didn't have the 1/4 x 1 x 4 flat stock so I calculated that I could procuce this using other stock on hand. I used 1/2" square stock and used my treadle hammer for a lot of the forging. Actually to make handling easier, I started with and 8" piece of stock and drew out the smaller section to the point that I could cut the two apart and handle the individual pieces conveniently. Both turned out well enough that critical artist wife was impressed with my work. I did not time myself, nor did I video the process
I have recently used the same technique to produce some botttle openers that I found here as well. Thanks for the fine demonstrations.

I really enjoyed watching you undertake Dan's challenge John and am very glad that you kept the video of it running on normal time, it was good to see the full process and to watch you work. And well done by the way, I was never in doubt but it looked like you even surprised yourself with the time - aside from the touch mark time, that one drop and the missing ruler must have lost you at least 30 seconds......:-)

Considering how you took time to explain what you were doing at points, I would say that you got it under 20 minutes. Going to get propane today for some forging. Working on tent spikes as suggested.

Valliant effort - the guy at Christ Centered Ironworks didn't get it done either, and he started with the piece hot, so an extra couple of minutes.
Watched him first, now you. I might make one just to make it. I'm too old and lazy to try (or want to try) to do it in 20 minutes. Maybe a little now, a little later, until I'm done.

Haha, I tried this yesterday. Thirty minutes into my practice run, I realized I didn't have anything that was the right diameter to use for a drift. So I spent the rest of y time making one. I'll have to give it a shot again when the weather clears and I can get back to the forge. Great job of yours! It looks really good.

I do agree that the time spent to put on your touchmark shouldn't "count", unless it was specified in the challenge that the piece must be touchmarked(and based on how you said that I kind of assume it was not). I say "mission accomplished".
Great little project. Reminds me of using my bayonet as a candle holder on reenactment campaigns. Enjoyed watching 👍🏻

That was fun! You should do some of this more often. Maybe not with the clock running, but it's fun to watch a good smith just working efficiently at speed; to see how he moves and performs various operations with minimal effort. That is something that is lost when doing step by step instructional demos, yet there is a ton of important instructional content there too. Just enough commentary to say what is happening, but without breaking up the action.

Great video, great challenge... I’m finding it very rewarding watching the different methods and styles people have to accomplish the same exact goal.. very interesting and enjoyable to watch
Two people would come to mind would be incredible additions to this challenge, Joey van der steeg and Brian brazeal, would be interesting to watch the hammer styles and approach to the project

Now that I've almost finished a commission I'm working on, I *might* have a crack at this, maybe.
Mr John that was a very good watch and a very worthy entry in the challange. Stuck in the tongs lost a pretty good but of time and gave need of another heat as I see it. Touch mark was just at 10 seconds so not a real issues.
Cudos for not starting over when you got stuck in the tongs n lost time. Marks of a real blacksmith and class act creator!

While the socket provides better stability for a tall candle, the spike or "pricket" I believe is for placing and burning the candle stub which might otherwise be wasted in the socket. That said, it's a good idea to let the spike protrude above the socket enough to comfortably stick the stub on it. This allows it to be almost completely consumed. Being a lighting junkie, I had to try out this fun little project and then give it some practical testing. Despite Hollywood depictions, candles were an expensive commodity in early times and people sought to get the most out of them if they could afford them. Thanks for yet another great presentation!
