Robert, 6 years ago you helped me on the same issue. Another alternator bite the dust for me this weekend. Died while driving. Got the car home with AAA and trip to Autozone and watched this video again. Done Deal. Thanks again.
Hi Robert, I just wanted to thank you for the very informative video. Thanks to your guidance, I was able to change the alternator on my 2002 IS300 in under an hour.
Very informative. But you did it the hard way. You could've more easily removed and replaced the alternator from the top. All you have to do is unplug the battery, remove the air filter box assembly, and loosen the belt. Then you should have enough room to unscrew the 2 bolts that keep the alternator in place.
Good video , thanks 1st time i ever did this . I was able to work around the hoses . Tight space though after moving the air flow . After taking it off and putting the new one on the harness connector was so old and brittle that a piece of it broke . So be careful when takeoff off old harness connectors . Went to the junkyard plucked one off .
Great video! Thank you so much! You said you can replace the voltage regulator separately? Does that involve taking the altenator apart? Unrelated, what do u guys use to keep that engine so clean!?
thank you very much for the nice video. my question is what does that small icon means the one that looks like car and it has two lights on it ,it looks like check engine light but it is something like a car with lights, and your ABS is on too is it a big deal or not?
hameed wafa ABS was only on for a few seconds, it went off once it completed the test cycle. Not sure what other light or icon you are referring to. Check your owners manual.
Hameed, I've seen that indicator before and that lets you know that you have a bulb or bulbs that is out or not properly functioning on the rear and needs to be replaced.
Robert thanks for the videos of the is300, i have a question whenever i turn in the lights my voltage goes down i just replace the alternator. Also im not getting any hot air from the heater any ideas what could be
+Cacayo ZC Not sure on the heat, maybe a heater control valve. Check with a forum. As for the volts, where did you get the alternator? It is probably bad. Have the voltage checked with a load.
I loosened the bolt on the tension pully to the point the nut gonna come off and it still didnt loosen the belt. The only pully with the 14mm bolt on it
You need the serpentine tool from Oreilly with 14mm socket. Facing car put tool at 11 oclock position and crank clockwise to loosen the tensioner while at same time use left hand to slip belt off the water pump pulley.
Almas me maten I am not familiar with the is200. I can check and get back with you in a couple of days. - Car Will Not Start Trouble Shooting Guide - Auto Repair Series
Hi Robert, Im struggling with the same issue i really don't know what's going on with my car, I've replaced the alternator and the battery as well but still i have voltage drop issue, starts up with 14.2 volts and later drops to 12.5 and the lowest was 11.8 volts, i believe this is not an issue with the alternator or the battery but im not able to get the issue. If your same voltage drop issue is sorted out please let me know what possibly it may be the issue. Please help.
Probably a bad alternator, however, you should measure the resistance in the battery cable between the battery and starter/alternator. If it is above 0.03, the cable is probably bad.
This all happened right after replacing the battery, i have changed alternator 3 times and bought a new battery again to check but still the same, however I'll get the cable checked. Hopefully that will solve the problem .
Dam!!, did you check for voltage drops on the battery live to alternator with everything powered up to create a load? Has that alternator got a "battery sense wire"? It looked so good at the start, i expected 13.8-14.2v, and it acheaved that easy.
I believe it does have a sense wire. I posted a question on the Lexus forum but have not gotten a response from the folks there. The ScanGauge is an OBD-2 tool so I only have what it receives. I don't know if all of the parts in the alternator are new when rebuild, I just know it drops while driving at stops. :( There is a chance that something is drawing the battery down when the car is static. I'll check for that soon.
Robert DIY Well if the sense wire is broken or badly connected the alternator would default to internal sensing i would guess, so the battery ends up lower than the alternator poz terminal voltage. I dont know if you have a cheap multimeter, but if you have, i would connect it to the alternator and chassis and face it on the windsheild, then get in and start the vehicle and switch all the accessorys on, the meter should show 13.8 or more.
I would think that my ScanGuage would give proper readings from the OBD2 port. I'm going to clean the wires going to the battery cable but with the voltage fluctuating from 14.4 to 11.7, something has to be bad. :(
Robert DIY Remember that the obd is 12v switched from the fusebox to battery, so it wont tell you what the alternator is doing if it has a bad live or sense wire. Just a reminder mate :-)
I had no idea where it got it's voltage from. I know it shows voltage and if the alternator is NOT charging the battery, the volts drop off pretty fast.
Thanks for your help!! I was able to change my alternator on my own. Took me a few extra hours lol, but if I can do it, anyone can lol. I'll check out your video for changing rotors and break pads soon. Thanks again!
@@RobertDIY I did... but you said at the end of the video your volts dropped down to 12.4. There is clearly something else wrong with the vehicle outside of an alternator.
So what was wrong? why did the voltage drop at the end of the video? My voltage was low today and around 13.5 and 14 when i was driving, but some stops id be low, i tested my system and the voltage regulator failed 5 times consistently. Ill be replacing the vr tonight, maybe the whole alternator
+Robert DIY So the reman you put in took a shit on you? thats why idk about remanufactured lol i sell them, but i dont trust them. im gonna do my voltage regulator first since lexus doesnt even sell a new alternator
So i did this last week, just been busy with work.took less than two hours between running in and out of the house and not having all the right sockets for 3/8 drive. The previous owner must have done the alternator before and messed up the E8 torx stud, because it wasn't there lol, just a regular 14mm bolt and a washer. Works for me, pulled it out through the bottom, popped the cover and new voltage regulator in things seem good, didn't pull the bracket, just the wire loom. I think my amp is causing too much pull, either wired bad or i need a capacitor, but later on, thanks for the video it was pretty helpful
Hey Robert! So I have. 2002 Lexus is300, while I was driving I lost all power and immediately thought it was my alternator, I went to auto zone and they tested my alternator, starter and battery. My battery was shot so I bought a new one. About an hour after I left autozone my battery was down to 11volts. Any ideas on the issue?
Thanks for the video, I just changed the alternator in a 2000 gs300. That torx stud gave me so much trouble. I ended up stripping the nut, and when I used a torx socket to try to remove it, the head broke off in the socket. I got the alternator out, though, with the help of a drill. I had to use a regular threaded bolt to replace the stud, as the lexus dealer didn't have the double ended stud, and said the warehouse didn't carry it anymore. Also, I tested the alternator with a multimeter, and I only got between 12.6-13.8 volts. I've read that although lights/heater, etc. can draw voltage away, it would only be for a few seconds, and that the voltage should recover? Still haven't figured that out yet.
Alternators have a voltage regulator that should quickly adjust the volts. Some work better than others. Sorry to read about your bolt issue. Try eBay or the junk yard if you want to get that bolt. There are other sources as well.
