I’m 22. I found this album at a used discount record and book store. I had no idea who they were. I just thought their name sounded cool so I bought it. Turned out to be one of my favorite bands. Call it serendipity, idk. I just know this music is incredible and I’m lucky to have found it on a whim.

Likewise, a random path of clicks led me to this comment today, and it really made me smile. Discovering new music can be one of life's great joys, and this story is exactly how I found some of my favorite bands. It's good to know that young people are still able share that experience.

It's funny I did the same thing but it was 1994 I think. I was at a record store and liked the cover. My buddy told me I wouldn't like them but I bought it anyway. I have been a fan since.

They are utterly timeless!! They were retro and futurist in tandem. When I look back to their times in 90’s most bands who also referenced past styles, have dated very badly. Stereolab were so pure in their work, I don’t think they can be placed in a time. Superb!!!

I saw this video on MTV's 120 Minutes in August of 1994. I thought this band was on a level way above what I usually saw on 120 Minutes. I loved it. Unfortunately, I didn't catch the name of the song or the band. Maybe I was too drunk and stoned, or maybe they didn't give the credits at the end of the video. I don't know what happened. I know that I wondered for the next 20 years what the band and song were. In 2014, I found this video on UA-cam, and I was really glad to have finally found it. I searched Stereolab's other music, and they are now one of my top few favorite musical acts of all time. They have a huge library of phenomenal music.

@@HominidInterneticus, I was a metalhead, but much more into classic rock of the 60s and 70s. I still am. I wasn't generally that much into the alternative genre that was so popular in the 90s, but I did really like The Breeders, Elastica, and Veruca Salt. If I had just known that Stereolab was the group that recorded "Ping Pong" or known the name of the song, I would have taken it from there and been a Stereolab fanatic then and ever since.

It's alright 'cause the historical pattern has shown
How the economical cycle tends to revolve
In a round of decades three stages stand out in a loop
A slump and war then peel back to square one and back for more
Bigger slump and bigger wars and a smaller recovery
Huger slump and greater wars and a shallower recovery
You see the recovery always comes 'round again
There's nothing to worry for things will look after themselves
It's alright recovery always comes 'round again
There's nothing to worry if things can only get better
There's only millions that lose their jobs and homes and sometimes accents
There's only millions that die in their bloody wars, it's alright
It's only their lives and the lives of their next of kin that they are losing

The only bit of the video I ever saw until the 2000s was the part that runs from 0:36 to 0:47 when shown on The Chart Show's Indie Countdown. Maybe it was shown on rare occasions but in hindsight these broadcasts were stokes of luck at the time. It's also too bad that there isn't much professionally recorded live performances from the 90s. Anyway. Looking forward to the reissues and gigs!

Before 9/11 there was a false sense of complacency, the cold war had ended and there was a tech market boom. After that day everyone became hypervigilant.

Anyone else unsure how they know this song? It would never have been played on any radio station in my area. I have no idea why I know it, but do and love it.
