  • This is real film from a Super 8 camera captured in modern day of a historic steam locomotive!
A brand new series for Geared Productions, In Vintage Film! Every year or so we will break out my grandfather's old vintage Super 8 Camera from the late 60s and film a special event. Something about trains and the image produced from Super 8 film produces such a feeling of watching something that is truly from the past. The film really speaks for itself. For the first In Vintage Film! video we see N&W 611 taking trains out of Roanoke for Memorial Day Weekend 2017, including scenes in Roanoke and even on the train.
The camera was originally owned by Jack Miller, who most likely purchased this camera overseas while serving in the US Navy. He used it as a hobby and even did some filming for weddings. Unfortunately he died when I was only about 2 years old. My father gained possession of his cameras and they sat in the attic for over 10 years before I rediscovered them. All his old Argus camera needed was a fresh pair of batteries and it started right up. I bought brand new film for it and the rest you see in the video.
Yale Film and Video is who I used to process this film. They did an excellent job in helping to fill me in with the information I needed. Please check them out!

Geared Productions was this filmed in the 80s or is this a vintage camera used today?

This was filmed with a camera made sometime around the 60s or 70s in 2017. It’s meant to look like it’s from the original steam program.

One of these days I am going to get my 1971 vintage Nikon Super 8 camera and shoot some film with it. The last super 8 film I did was Reading 2101 in 1985 which was a super 8 sound film. But sound film isn't made any more.

I'd suggest buying an external digital microphone, or use a regular video camera for the audio. I was thinking about doing that for another "in Vintage Film" video. You can mask the audio over the video in almost any video editing software. And you should totally film 2102's return to steam when RBMN finish her restoration. That would be super cool!
