Diebuster is he equivalent of the big budget sequels but none of the charm or style of the originals we always criticize hollywood for doing, why would this be different? Its as generic as you can get, same with the mecha designs and the story is just invasion #2, the ending is chaming tho but still transformers 2 is not a good movie just because the forest battle was epic. Maybe if gainax did it better it wouldn't be dead right now.
I really don't know how else to tell you if you didn't feel the same emotional connection with the characters and bawl at the finale like last time, or of you grasp at straws to call the new visual style generic, you either just don't have a soul or are really stupid.

Diebuster has grown on me a lot over time. When I first watched it I was not overly impressed with it in contrast to Gunbuster (which is my favourite anime), with the exception of the final quarter. However I feel like it's a worthy successor to both the original anime and the narrative set up within it. I think what put me off originally is the aesthetics and the more whimsical tone, that and Nono being quite a bit of a different character from Noriko (who is a character that I strongly identified with when I first saw Gunbuster back in the mid 90s. I still do somewhat, but I have grown in self confidence and other metrics), but as I say it has all grown on me as time has gone by.
@@Pepper-Zeeyou have to understand why, I saw it as a part of the anime boom that happened in the west during the 90s and it was the first time I had ever seen animation used to tell an intellectually grown up (yes it has silly moments, yes it has fan fiction, but aside from the "super robo*" elements of the story what you have is both a story about personal growth and personal loss interwoven into, for it's day and especially considering the medium, a pretty well done "hard sci fi**" story. That in combination with the passion and attention to detail that went into the animation made it stand out as not only a piece of art, but a shining example of what you are able to achieve with animation. I would also like to add that despite the west going through the first anime explosion, it's worth remembering that it was ultimately a small thing for the time and the resounding attitude in the west that "cartoons are for children" would not begin to change for some time yet.
