The drive works by breaking down matter to the quantum level and then reforms the pure energy into whatever form the user desires, be it it electric, kinetic, or even potential energy. Buster Machine 3, AKA Jupiter, was broken down to a near pure energy state. The reason the bomb did not go off wasn't from lack of power or energy. It needed the willpower of a pilot to transform it into pure kinetic energy. The scientists who created the drive did not fully understand how it worked, though Coach had pretty much figured it out from his time testing the prototype Gunbuster. Also, he was dying from cancer from radiation exposure when fighting the aliens and from his time as a pilot of the proto Gunbuster. This info comes from the info books from Diebuster with notes from the original Gunbuster included.
Released in 1988 and the best Gainax anime ever made. In fact, its time dilation concept from Albert Einstein's relativity theory was quite similar to Christopher Nolan's 2014 film Interstellar. And this mecha (Gunbuster) is one of my favorites among super robots in anime.

The tension and coolness of this scene is increased if you take the way this fight played out in Super Robot Wars T into account. The Earth Federation brings everything it has to this fight, battleships, mobile suits, super weapons, and of course, the titular super robots. The colony laser fired 8 times in quick succession and exploded. It's also mentioned that many other tactical weapons were deployed to attempt to turn the tide. All star mechs like the mazingers, shin getter dragon, gaogaigar, hi-nu gundam, gunbuster, and many others fought like hell to repel them. Even the main antagonists show up to help. Even with all these factors, they only managed to destroy around 55% of the space monsters before the defensive line was broken (granted several other powerful entities crashed the battle making it exponentially more dificult, however the point that it took all of these powers coming together to have a chance of potentially repelling the space monsters still stands). And in the original series as seen in the video, Gunbuster pretty much solos all of them.

Welcome back to Super Robot Wars T, my first time discovering Noriko and the Gunbuster, also, I cant believe Noriko's Seiyuu can still make the screams almost more than 20 years later.
Sure makes the Earth-and-moon centered Third Impact *tame* in comparison. Made even moreso come the sixth/next/final episode with its Milky Way galaxy core destroying Operation Carneades. And then the likes of Diebuster (its sequel) and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan (its spiritual successor; yes, the manly Simon the Digger and the mighty Kamina actually owe themselves to the likes of Noriko and Kazumi AND Diebuster's Lal'c and Nono, among others) up things *beyond eleven.* Addendum: Love how TV Tropes treats 3:10-3:42 in its main page for the show, particularly on the "Casual Danger Dialogue" set.
Still love Gunbuster after all these years. Made me stupidly happy to realize that a lot of the elements of it were reborn in Gurren Lagann, especially when the Super Galaxy Dai Gurren appearred. That forehead beam of the Gunbuster, at least to me, is still one of the most powerful shots in anime. It beats out full-scale ship weapons like the Macross Cannon any time.
I'm not sure if it's intentional; Noriko's movements after Gunbuster is formed makes me think she was trying to do a cool pose but, couldn't settle on one.
My favorite part of that entire transformation has to be the head snap at 1:06. Such a simple action that manages to communicate a lot of mood and power at the same time.

holy fuck, how is Noriko's scream is so satisfying to hear? 1:20, 1:50, 2:08, 3:48
Because it's one of HARD WORK and GUTS!!
For a mech with so little screen time it's kill count is amazing
Noriko's shouts here always give me goosebumps.
Welcome back to Super Robot Wars T, my first time discovering Noriko and the Gunbuster, also, I cant believe Noriko's Seiyuu can still make the screams almost more than 20 years later.
Everytime Gunbuster is in a Super Robot Wars game, it's always my MVP. Just push it out into the front and watch the enemy melt...
Damn you Gainax.
I will always have a special place in my heart for you.
RIP.
Sure makes the Earth-and-moon centered Third Impact *tame* in comparison. Made even moreso come the sixth/next/final episode with its Milky Way galaxy core destroying Operation Carneades.
And then the likes of Diebuster (its sequel) and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan (its spiritual successor; yes, the manly Simon the Digger and the mighty Kamina actually owe themselves to the likes of Noriko and Kazumi AND Diebuster's Lal'c and Nono, among others) up things *beyond eleven.*
Addendum: Love how TV Tropes treats 3:10-3:42 in its main page for the show, particularly on the "Casual Danger Dialogue" set.
But not as op and absurd like gurren laganm but that's what makes these anime fire 🔥
I'm not sure if it's intentional; Noriko's movements after Gunbuster is formed makes me think she was trying to do a cool pose but, couldn't settle on one.
CHANGE! GETTER DRA-oh wait.... wrong mecha..... whoops.
BASUTAAA BEAMMMMMMMMMM
DOUBLE TOMAHOOKUU! BOOOOOOMARANG!!!
Funnily in later SRW games, Ryoma is pushing Noriko to use Gunbuster's Tomahawk Axes
DOUBLE TOMAHAWK-! BOOMERAAANGGG
My favorite part of that entire transformation has to be the head snap at 1:06. Such a simple action that manages to communicate a lot of mood and power at the same time.
Muscles flex.
But robots move their joints rigidly.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, for the trip down memory lane.
JESUS CHRIST WHERE HAS THIS BEEN ALL MY LIFE
Goddamn, I forgot how infectious the energy in this scene is. It's like the fights in Gurren Lagann.
I had totally forgotten that the buster shield was literally a fuckin space cape.
Gunbuster best space opera ever
I love how Gunbuster has one of the hypest finishing moves in anime and it's literally just a kick
When they both screamed gunbuster it gave me chills
"Don't think the Gunbuster is just some ordinary machine... IT HAS COACH'S HEART BEATING WITHIN IT!!!"
Makes me cry every fucking time.
There might be bigger or stronger super robots, but for me Gunbuster will always be the king of super robots.

You know when something is so badass you get goosebumps
Gunbuster is SO epic, loved it since the first time I saw it, one hell of a powerful mecha.
Yup. Long time favorite mech. Liked it better than anything from Diebuster too.
Still one of the most badass moment in mecha history.
The mech's design is integrated especially on the face it resembles a mono-eyed gundam
HOMING LASER
holy shit, I've never seen this anime before but the art is fucking beautiful
I love how confident they are as soon as they combine the Gunbuster, specially Noriko who was crying and terryfied just one episode ago.
I'm a native Japanese, but I'm glad that people from different countries are discussing about Gunbuster.
I'm using translation software, so I'm sorry if the text is not correct.
It was correct. We love Gunbuster. :)

#ThreeWordsSheWantsToHear DOUBLE BUSTER COLLIDER!!!!!
followed by UWAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Who else got goosebumps by watching this?
I wonder if anyone else knows this but the 2 girls who are singing the song during this battle are the same 2 girls who are voicing both Noriko and Kazumi and if no one believes me check the English credits at the end of episode 6.
I still get goose bumps so many years later.
its 2022 and im still in awe for this animation o/
nolan can never aim for this kind of perfection
What Hollywood does is just ersatz, squeeze of this moth ... ing Ski-Fi porn. They will never reach the proper level.

Buster Tomahawk and Buster Homerun stored in the shoulders.
+NewTypo Yep, great attention to detail!
Does it really count as a "Homing" laser if it annihilates everything in a cubic mile?
Well, never mind, who am I to question the one that screamed her way through thousands of foes per second?
Imagine Jean shouting Homing Laser (same voice actress as Noriko's) instead of Captain Nemo in Nadia XD
スパロボで知ってたけどこんなに気持ちよく無双してるとは思わなかったw
thank you, thank you for re uploading this. it got deleted from youtube.
The hot blood burns through the generations! LOVE & GUTS!!!
Indefinitely better than any of the shit Gainax shat out in the last two decades.
Man the way Noriko screams "homming laser" hits diferently smh
何度見ても、日高のり子スゲェって思うシーンだ。
