As a person who has lived all her life in Madrid, I have to say that all of what you said is true, and these are the tricks we use tell apart Spanish people and "guiris". Congratulations!!
Yes I feel like whenever the Spanish go outside they make sure they have a sleek and presentable appearance! I find myself dressing up just to go to the grocery store lbs
I agree with you on the American culture of day vs night!! I just moved here three weeks ago and each time I go out my friends are I are dressed to the nines (realizing quick not good to wear high heels out haha) but during the day I’m in no make up, glasses, fabletics, and a hoodie 😂😂😂 I’m still figuring out the balance!
agree there is an expectation of dressing for the season. I find it very strange and I find myself doing it - if you're warm, hot or cold be comfortable. To be honest I find it very weird that people are dressed for 2 degrees or less when it's above 10. Today was 16 - I'm not cold at 16 for me that's spring. Madrid is an unusual mix of conservative and live and let live.
I think that goes for most of Europe, Ireland, the UK, France, Italy. You have to remember your in the city were you have a lot of tourists so when I'm a tourist usally I don't get dressed up to the nines, but usally we will dress up going out at night
You’re right about most of these, but I think clothes being more neutral is more of a current fashion thing. Back in the 2000s clothes were a lot more colorful. Regarding the shorts thing - Spanish men do wear shorts when it’s hot. It’s almost never basketball shorts but rather jean shorts or khakis (not cargo/utility style but a dressier short). I’ve seen basketball shorts on guys but only in the last couple of years and they all seemed to be really young (under 20ish).
On loved your video on this and I smiled at your disclaimer. I thought it was nice as I watch a few videos on Spain 🇪🇸 and people have no idea.Spain up north is like Ireland where I'm all green and cooler .I now live for several years on costa Calida which is hot hot hot even winter is not cold.Madrid I have not been but for the main I see spanish people dress very smart no load clothes. Men were full length trousers, some may wear shorts to the knee, not many.we all were flip flops but with a back and without also a wedge saddle or some form of sandle, women's sports shoes are never branded that I notice but are blingy gold, silver or black white with shiny studs or diamonds 💎 not real ,you know blingy.I personally were flip flops all yr round but I have driving shoes as huge fine if driving in flip flops but I do live 15 min drive from ⛱️ beach.
Hi kat i need advice on something is there a way to dress to impress when I'm going to travel to Spain and what type of shoes i should or not shouldn't wear especially clothes in general I mostly dress to impress but I sometimes especially when I'm out shopping or going anywhere else
The Spanish dress up everyday of the week haha. To school, to work, to bars etc. If you get ready and dress up a little more than in the usa, you will fit in perfectly
I had to share your video with a friend. It cracked me up so much that the first thing you talked about was socks with sandals. We have an ongoing joke about this between us (from our trips to Europe, especially the ones to Spain). I noticed this in Barcelona too so I think it extends to outside of Madrid for sure. I had been wearing boots all day (with a slight heel) and I was tired so I decided to just put my Nike sliders on cus I practically live in them. My bf look at my feet like wth are you wearing?! Sandals are for inside the house hahaha. To me it was nothing. I think it’s def an American trend. As for sandals/flip flops, in Cali, you see people in sandals even in winter.
Hahah! It's soooo true!!! I did it once when I first got to spain because I litterally was just walking to the post office next to my house and I learned VERY quickly that, that is a HUGE no no here hahhaaha Thanks for sharing Claudia :)
OMG as soon as I saw the first one... I just had to tell you that EVERY Mediterranean grandfather (especially if they were born in Spain, Italy etc) wear socks and sandals hahahaha. Also another thing they wear (especially old Italian grandpas) is the handkerchief on the head instead of a hat, especially when gardening. I wish I could insert pics lmaooo
I never see old man wearing socks with sandals in Spain, except those british and german. And Spanish are not all mediterranean, just the ones that lives in the mediterranean coast. The others from north or atlantic islands or in madrid and deep of country are not.
I’m an American and anyone wearing socks with sandals is strange even to us. Men shouldn’t wear shorts unless they’re working out or cleaning the garage or lounging in the house.
I'm spanish and I wear socks with sandals 😂 but it's true that it's strange to see people in Spain wearing that, when I do people stare at me, probably thinking: this girl is cRAzY!!!
Good video. I just think that trying to wear what people in a country you’re visiting are wearing is pointless. Often european trends can actually be very ugly. Example: Men wearing Capri style pants in Eastern Europe in the summer.
I’m a Spaniard living in the US and I also noticed that many (male) students wear sports shorts, and in Spain it’d be kind of odd, at least where I live I just realized that you mention this in the video lmao
What is the weather like in March? I will be going to both Madrid and Barcelona and have been going crazy attempting to configure what to wear. Thank you
Madrid is different from other Spain! Madrid is not Spain! men are very sporty with their clothing in Spain and wear basketball shorts always. Also, I do not see girls dressing up at all! I wear a beautiful dress and everyone looks at me surprised because all girls wear the same red lipstick, booty shorts and bralette- all I see!
As a person who has lived all her life in Madrid, I have to say that all of what you said is true, and these are the tricks we use tell apart Spanish people and "guiris". Congratulations!!
OMG thank you!! I feel so honored hahah
I love how I'm Spanish and im here just wanting to know whot ppl think about our "fashion" cause i dont even know whot it is😂
Yes I feel like whenever the Spanish go outside they make sure they have a sleek and presentable appearance! I find myself dressing up just to go to the grocery store lbs
Hahaha. It's so true. I also get ready just to go to the store. It's a good habit though
The socks and sandals trend is still a trend. Its only acceptable with slides.
Thanks for the update haha. My friends use to wear flipflops too. OMG
Never acceptable, it’s what’s worn in prison...jailhouse style, looks ridiculous
just reading this now and it's really popular with birkenstocks
i’d say only acceptable if youre going to the gym and prefer not to wear your shoes on the way or going home from the gym

You will get the hang of it very quickly :) It's fun !

Socks with sandals are still a thing in the USA in 2020
I’m planning on studying abroad in June & this was so helpful! Thank you!

This video helps me a lot know about fashion trends in Madrid. Thanks
I agree with you. Especially the sports shoes which should not be worn all the time
this video described very nicely the fashion trends of Madrid with legitimate information.

This video is shows all the true facts. It is very useful presentation. Great job.
Thanks for watching! What Spanish fashions have you noticed to be different ??

The Chewbacca/Beyonce comment was gold.
