This might be the strangest arachnid I've ever seen...
Subscribe: / mywildbackyard
Here at MyWildBackyard we investigate the secrets of the natural world- secrets that can be hidden in our very own backyards! I want to share the incredible world of insects, spiders and other wildlife with you and inspire you to explore your curiosity. Get out there, and find your adventure!
For those who read the description- we've updated the channel! I'm working on adding more features to videos to better expand our conversations about the secrets we find in the natural world! Introducing the Creature Tier System! There are four rankings:
1. Staple - These are the lowest tier creatures. They are the most common species in a given habitat, and while they're not boring, they're really only exciting when you're exploring a new habitat and you haven't seen them before. Not something to write home about.
2. Neat - These are a step up from Staple. They don't make your entire day, but they are worth taking a closer look at when found. Definitely can be exciting to have a productive day finding many Neat species.
3. Wild - These are exciting to find. Whether they have interesting defensive features that offer a nice challenge in the field, are particularly cool looking, or maybe a little bit rare, Wild species aren't necessarily the MOST memorable of encounters, but they definitely make your day when you see them. An adventure featuring many Wild species will truly be memorable.
4. Gem - These are special. Usually involving extremely interesting biology and significant rarity, Gem species are animals that you really do not see every day. These species can make your whole adventure, and will be very memorable.

Spencer, you deserve your own show on Discovery or Animal Planet.
I would definitely watch it!😊
That would be INSANE!
Agreed 🤘
I would watch it.
Id watch it!
Great video Spencer! Vinegaroons are some of my favorite arachnids, so it’s great to finally see them on the channel. It was cool seeing Donny make an appearance too! :)
Dude I’ve been looking for them SO long 😂
Great video as always, and I think what really set this apart was your group’s lighthearted banter, as well as the giddy excitement when you first found the vinegaroon. Really gives the impression that we’re all just a bunch of mates hanging out on a trip.
We are indeed! And we will be in AUS next month 👀
5:49 the ant dragging the claw was a paid actor for sure
I wish I coulda paid him for that. One of the cooler things I’ve stumbled onto in the wild
I love how the arachnid species works. The scarier it looks, the more harmless it is (AKA the vinegarroons, whip scorpion, and camel spiders).
Cool critters those Vinegaroons. Not sure which is worse, snake musk or Vinegaroon spray. Glad you guys were successful on your hunt. There were a few mojaves waiting for you on those roads.
Wish we coulda stayed out late to look! Had to drive back to Tucson though to meet up with a legendary herping duo 👀
@@MyWildBackyard 😂 Tough one... herping duo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ or mojaves?
Spencer, I learn more from you in 15 minutes than I do from elsewhere, period. As an engineer and an educator, I think you were born to do what you're doing. Much love from the republic of Texas, fam!
I totally agree!
They would fit right in to a prehistoric scene. I’m glad that research station is there to keep an eye on their habitat. It would be a real shame if we lost them.
Thanks for the adventure, Master Spencer.
I loved the Camel spiders at Hoover dam, all night they would run in and out around our campfire snatching moths and roaches, I loved it when they jumped off our knees to grab a moth, tons of character and quite friendly, I even hand fed them a June Beatle or two!
As a Scorpio I'm biased when I say scorpions are my favorite arachnid lol. I'm so here for this 🖤🦂
Always nice to start with a cute camel spider 👍
You should do a Timber Rattlesnake video. As an avid fan of anything with scales, I have never really seen a Timber Rattler in many shows like this. Ive heard theyre the most common Rattlesnake overall within the US, but I've genuinely never seen one, having seen lots of Copperheads, Cottonmouths, Diamondbacks, etc but NEVER the Timber with its awesome black tail! Theyre one of the coolest looking snakes of America but seldom studied. Just an idea...love the show!
Been a WHILE since I filmed a timber. They were actually my first rattlesnake!
@@MyWildBackyard Very cool! If the video of it is on your channel, I will check it out for sure! Thanks for the reply!
Agreed- Spencer's channel is kicking butt. I would love to see him do an episode in this format on Timber Rattlesnakes. I have a few recommendations for excellent content about Timbers- The Wild Report, Mark Lotterhand, and, this probably goes without saying- NKF Herping. Mark Lotterhand has some amazing animal interaction trail cam videos from den sites- I mean really wild stuff.
Unsubscribing, I liked when you showed cool creatures and dispelled myths about them instead of showing cool creatures and dispelling myths about them.
Just kidding, this was awesome! The extra b-roll really tied this together, and the on screen chemistry between you, Donny, and Carter was so good. Really looking forward to more videos in this style.
The phylogeny of the Arachnida is so strange, nothing seems to make sense. Someone grouped horseshoe crabs and ricinulei, it seems so wrong xD
I hope that there will be more studies to clarify this riddle
Yeah chelicerata is one of my favorite groups for this very reason. Super convoluted and strange, and exciting every time we have new discoveries!
Wow that's creepy cool.
I've only seen pictures of them in books.
I had no idea they were that big.
For some reason l always thought they were tiny.
They are insane! Probably one of my all time favorite arachnids of all time
Such a strange arachnid i think you have pseudoscorpions also in North America and an episode on Solifuges would be great
I live in New Mexico and these things live here, too. I was able to capture a video of one in our museum where it hunted and ate a cricket. Very interesting!
I've sure "WANTED TO" though.
Thank you so much for your videos. Always informative and at the same time entertaining. :)
The scorpion can spray acid
Automatically him: proceeds to touch it💀💀
It would be interesting to see their vinegar like substance under a microscope.
I wonder what that would look like!
1:44, my thoughts exactly xD
Funny you should mention The Elder Scrolls, the chaurus in Skyrim look like hellgrammites!
Epic find sir thank you for share this rare type of hybrid awesome
Nature is definitely stranger then fiction
85% Acetic acid? You can dilute it to get some exotic laundry detergent...
You kinda can!
The vinegar smell is due to the acid being sprayed being acetic acid. It is technically edible and the main ingredient in white vinegar.
Absolutely harmless, I used to find them all over Albuquerque NM
Wow, w/ mountains like that, I know you're in Tucson.
Very interesting!! I learn so much from your channel.
Thank you! Down in Florida lookin for diamondbacks as we speak! So much cool stuff to explore with the wildlife down here
@@MyWildBackyard Yes sir, welcome to my state. Can't wait to see that video.
watching you get bitten by a tarantula has weirdly enough helped me get over my arachnophobia lel
I think vinegaroons look more Fallout world rather than Elder Scrolls. During your southwest desert trips, have you run across Asbolus verrucosus? I used to find them a lot when I would go hunting for lizards as a kid.
I have seen a few of those! Very neat little beetles.
I like "tailless scorpions " I used to be very afraid of them, and now I keep safe a hide out for one of them in my home, Guatemala.
They’re super awesome too! Some of my favorite arachnids for sure
I would love to see Spencer do a European tour
Same lol. Velvet spiders, predatory katydids, some of the crazy praying mantis diversity, I’ll have a blast
I'll be watching thats for sure
can someone just give this man a shit load of money so he can do these forever and travel wherever he wants
Hey Spence,,,,,,, I've been living in Yuma, Az, for over 40 yrs now, and NEVER seen one of those?
The first time I've seen a Mole Cricket,,,,,, I thought it was some kind of "FREAK" insect. Very "SCAREY" looking
Thank you for showing us and teaching us about this creature! I enjoyed it!
Alas! I am missing the final, acidic, ingredient to produce my delicious home-made mayonnaise! Wherever shall I find such a fluid in the middle of the scorching desert?
The elusive Vinegaroon:
It’s crazy how strong the smell is. Smells exactly like when my family decorates Easter eggs
F those camel spiders. Had to deal with them in Iraq.
Always happy to see you upload, love seeing gnarly critters and seeing the wild files was nice! Funny guy so im sure it was a lot of fun!
Donny is hilarious. All around great dude.
Bro always posts good vids
I kinda hope you get back to all the little critters and not just the sensational scary ones.
Acid is an extreme way to refer to vinegar…….
It’s concentrated acetic acid, like vinegar but 13 times stronger
Unfortunetly we don't have them in Europe ;(
Interesting. Are they kept as pets and bred in captivity?
They can be! Apparently they’re not hard to keep either
Slow down before you run out if animals to go look for!
😂 don’t worry we got tons of cool stuff left to find!
they are so cool
And another exhilarating episode from Spencer. Love your stuff man! Just great. Thank you.
Somehow, your titles continue to describe my taste in women
😂😂
In Bug Wars those Vinegaroons are unbeatable. They off spiders, scorpions and even centipedes. They truly are no joke.
Love this and especially this Collab freaking awesome man
That acid concentration is enough to inspire instant regret. Probably should wear eye pro just in case. Very hard to fix acid burns on the cornea.
Crossed Paths With One On A Florida Barrier Island; Scared The Heck Out Of Me Since I Was Not Familiar With Them At That Time.
Ridley Scott produced and directed alien, but it's the late artist H. R. Giger that made the xenomorph and facehugger designs that we all love.
I agree with the growing opinion that you deserve your own show.
Regardless, scorpions are my favorite creatures ever since I've seen one right in front of me. Then I saw a Vinegaroon ! Those claws and the whip in the back. Then I saw an Amblypygi! Holy smokes ! Amazing! Then something funny happened, I had a Camel spider chase my shadow in the desert . I served in the ARMY for many years and they sent me everywhere. That's where I saw all these critters. Fascinating!
You probably wouldn't believe me but I have seen one in Southern California as big as a basketball and albino White
Vinegaroon. Ah, that's where that Notorious Monster from Final Fantasy 11 got it's name from.
We saw a couple around Ft. Bliss, Texas, back in the 90s. Pulling guard duty at night. Nobody had ever heard of them at the time and guys ribbed us and said it was a tall tale!
For information that the title conveniently left out, the most dangerous scorpion in America is the Arizona Bark Scorpion. A Vinegaroon is not a scorpion nor are they related. It’s an arachnid yes but scorpion no. They are classified in their own unique group of arachnids. Calling them a scorpion in the title or saying they are related is wrong.
His Paws, or claws look like that of a Mole Cricket.
Hey BRO, I’m thinking of you since the Hurricane warnings went up.
If you are in the path, take videos of the contents of your home. Grab family and ALL the pets, medication, important papers and photos, a bit of food (three days for each pet) and leave for safer ground.
It might feel horrible for awhile especially when returning to your home…the lives of you, your family, friends, neighbors and pets (yes including chickens) are far more precious than than material things are.
Stay safe spiderman
We are safe! Thanks for looking out though 🙏
Unlike the spider or scorpion which has venom, the camel spider is like a chiwawa in the front yard. It can’t actually hurt you but it’s going to make you think it’s all business.” That thing will eat the spider and scorpion, it got plenty business lol
Hey Spencer, how does evolution design a system with two seperate acids that explode when combined. Just saying, but then again evolution is so over any way.
ty for doing what you do...awesome to learn...do you also identify spiders if one is having a hard time trying to ?
Very scary looking but docile. I have one named pepper and she slowly hugs her food to death. And the spray when she gets nervous literally smells like vinegar chips 😂
These things killed my family way back in the 70s. I grew up an orphan because of them. Or was that just a nightmare i had as a kid and the poor creature is innocent?
I had a pet Vinegarroon when I was a kid in TX. harmless but cool pet nonetheless!
I watched some video of a guy eating one of these I believe raw and it completely grossed me out. Their names even sound really gross and stinky.
These things are wildly cool, what blows my mind is that they can take on their venomous relatives and come out on top with sheer brute force and armor. Great video and collab, those B-roll shots are ridiculously high quality.
Gotta get some more local collabs going soon! Tryna go look for salamanders this winter? I’m gonna be gone next month in Australia but then I’m free till February
@@MyWildBackyard For sure dude! Hey we still have the month of October too, plenty of great stuff out and about
@@TheWildReportOfficial I’m in Delaware all next week but other than that I’m around!
That camel spider at the start reminded me of all the stories we had when I was deployed to the desert. Tall tales of them leaving necrotic wounds or eating on you when you were asleep or that they were hand-sized monster spiders that would chase you.
All fake. But that was the days of early internet.
Very interesting video as always. Thank you.
Damn, people still say first.
😂 yeah they do
I mean there are lots of children on the internet if that explains anything lmao
Arizona….at night….another level of crazy 😂
Isn’t the spray Formic Acid..?
just shooed one out of the house here in southern NM. definitely cool looking critters
1:03 "I have to get one"
That was NOT a "huge" camel spider. You should see the ones in the middle east
I've heard the vinagroons are actually decent pets
These and centipedes make me scared to camp in the desert! At some point in the night I will have to leave my tent to pee....
if it makes wildfiles feel any better ive lived here my whole life and still havent seen a goddamn turkey
Really scary looking ! great video !
Congrats nice camel spider catch as well.
I never knew it was camel spiders in Arizona 😳
easily top 10 coolest animals in the entire world
always cool to see people enjoying where I call home
They're like the most harmless thing
We need a jacks wildlife cross over!
I caught one just like that in West Texas
Those are crazy! All the rocks and trees I've turned over, I've never seen one. Looks robust!
It was insane! Head to southeast AZ sometime, that’s probably the best area to go
Going from watching your videos from 6 years ago to the videos you put out now it's so incredible to see the progress you've made over the years! Keep safe and please keep on educating everyone on these beautiful insects!
You’ve been here a while! Back in the Can I Catch It days!
Be cool to train one to spray your fries.
Spencer I want to see you find a goliath bird eater tarantula
Goin to Brazil next fall! I’ll see if we can find a guy who knows where they’re at
@@MyWildBackyard ok cool can’t wait to see if you can find it
I think they are cool
That was a hardcore harvester ant. Nice shirt btw. Nc represent.
I’m an NC resident and a UNC alum! Try to run the Tar Heel ten miler every year if I can
I bet you'd love traveling back to the Carboniferous-Early Permian periods. Maybe a quick trip to the Early Devonian. Just avoid shorelines and wading. :)
Man that would be insane. Someone invent time travel please!
Really never seen one in person.
My Vingaroon just came out of her tunnel after 8 months for molting.
She lost her tail before the molt & it grew back 🖤👏🏻🖤👏🏻🖤
I have the most excellent picture of her drinking water !!
I love how they use their claws as little scoops
No common sense or fear of death! They had camel spiders when I was in Iraq and they were bigger, that one, which was a baby! I get the "creeps," weekly from watching your video's!
i know some bugs use acid but what about snakes ?
