  • ISRAEL - ORTHODOX JEWS PAY FINAL RESPECTS TO PINHAS MENAHEM ALTER
Tens of thousands of Orthodox Jews have turned out in the rain to pay their last respects to Pinhas Menahem Alter.
Alter, one of Israel's leading ultra-Orthodox rabbis, died in Jerusalem, aged 69.
The rabbi was found dead at his home. He was not known to be ill and no cause of death has been announced yet.
Despite the torrential rain, Orthodox Jews turned out by the thousands Thursday to pay their final respects to Pinhas Menahem Alter.
A sea of black umbrellas marked the progress of the mourners, paying homage to the 69-year-old rabbi.
Alter was found dead at his home hours earlier - no cause of death was immediately announced, although he was not known to be ill.
The rabbi was born in Poland before leading the Gerrer or Gur community, which is the most important Hassidic group in Israel.
The Gur dynasty of rabbis was founded at Gora Kalwaria, near Warsaw, in 1859.
Alter was right-wing in his politics and instrumental in preventing the entry of the ultra-Orthodox United Tora Judaism bloc into Israel's present Labour-led government.
Rabbi Alter leaves a wife, fours sons and a daughter.
