  • Are the cheap Flysky radios really much more laggy than the Taranis? Spoler alert: It isn't. It's actually faster.
    Measuring the Stick To Output Signal lag (STOS lag), method is described in the video. Tool used: Saleae Logic 8 Pro @ 50M samples/second.
    Receivers used: X4RSB for the Taranis, and X6b for the Flysky.

    First of all thanks for taking the time to do this, you are doing the gods work :).
    I wasn't expecting worst results from the Taranis, I guess the extra computation needed for the bells and whistles of the Taranis, has a price.

    Just wanted to say a big fan of your channel in the work that you do. it's very innovative, scientifically and mathematically Justified, and I appreciate that extra work you put in! You are one of the few people who really grounds this Hobby in scientific evidence and testing!

    Great work!(confirming Drone Mesh's results). I own the Turnigy Evolution and the Flysky I6S and both had serious range issues with with 3-4 different full sized and micro receivers...witness the extensive problem thread on RCG of the FS-A8S. There were countless times when I experienced brownouts and failsafes 100-150m out on different receivers. I held off on jumping to Frsky for months as I was impressed with the lower latency results by Drone Mesh (and Dronelab)...and I loved the ergonomics of the Evolution. I prayed for a new better receiver to be developed from Flysky but it never came. I got my X7S about 6 weeks ago and after more than 100 packs I have had zero issues flying out as much as 525m.
    I take issue with your statement that there is "no reason to avoid the Flyskys". Now if Frsky can just fix its latency without the TBS Crossfire...

      Thanks!
      One thing I regret not mentioning is the much better selection of receivers for the Taranis. That might be part of the range problem - the two antenna telemetry receivers for Flysky are so weird and bulky that not a lot of people fly them, wheres the Taranis practically comes with a super nice, diversity micro receiver. We definitely do intend to do some range testing of various TX - RX combos, to sort this one out. We just build a prototype range testing device and are digging thought the data to confirm that it is useful and applicable to a piloting scenario. You can have a sneak-peak at "Rangee, the range tester" prototype here: i.imgur.com/UDCzELM.jpg. It will take us a while to make a "Flysky vs Taranis range comparison tested and measured" video, but I'm definitely looking forward to that :D

      Yeah, but you can modify your Flysky FS-iA10B to be very flat, just desolder all the pins and solder a small cable to your preferred bus. For binding, just short the 2 Binding pins. A bit of heatshrink or insulating Tape and done. A flat flysky receiver with 2 antennas.

    Yet another testament how bad wireless is. in general.. :) Great test.. also remember the CS server latency is measured in 2 ways Send and receive =D so it's double bad.

    I've always thought the Taranis had some lag to it, and with this now the resale value is destroyed :d try testing some older radios, I wonder how Futabas and Spektrums stack up, even older MHz ones would also be cool to see,:>

    Would be interesting to see this done to a Taranis with a Crossfire module. It's been said to be lower latency, too.

    What binding mode was the taranis in ? 8 or 16 channels. Seems people have reason to believe it's better in 8 channel

    Please do a comparison between the Taranis and the RadioLink AT9S if you can, they claim 3ms latency across all 12 channels

  • @Terazuk

    I hear that the flysky latency is much more pronounced at range, more so than the taranis, any plans to revisit and test this particular claim?

    • @dronelab1280
      @dronelab1280  6 років тому +4

      It boils down to range in general. Dropping packets once you are flying out of range will cause the drone to be less responsive, even though some signal does pass through. The worse the range, the sooner this happens. We're planing to build a rig to quantify the "hit rate" at various ranges, though it might take as some time to get to that, with other things planned for the nearest videos.

      It’s a very nice pair of super thin electric heated gloves from bucken.se. We’re going to have a “winter is coming” episode in October with some recommendations for wintertime droning, but right now I can you that that is the fanciest option that works out rather well.

  • @roscotte

    What did you expect ? Taranis firmware is much much more complex than the simple i6s and does a lot of extra things between each gimbals sampling. There's also an ADC filter to reduce sticks jitter on Taranis, it induces a bit more latency if activated and there's tons of things to look at depending how the radio is set. Anyway, even the best pilots have no problem of latency with radio control, others aspects are much more critical than that.

    • @plainuser48596
      @plainuser48596 6 років тому +1

      Non of you've said is relevant. Latency matters for "best pilots" that's why many of them are ditching FrSky and jumping onto much faster Crossfire. Adding filtration on ADC is/could be done on the Flysky for all we know. Fact that radio got more features and "things to do" other than sending gimbals readings is no reason or excuse for bad latency - unless there is some kind of issue in code. Other aspects of the radio are important but quality and latency of control is the most important - again that's why crossfire is a thing and that's why everybody uses HAL gimbals on taranis.
