I'm not a Doctor, but I play one on TV Commercial 1986 with Peter Bergman Vicks Formula 44

- I always have heard this saying but I didn't realize it was from this commercial with Peter, who played Cliff Warner on All My Children. The original commercial in 1984 starred Chris Robinson who played Rick Webber on General Hospital. This was personally transferred from my on video tape from 1986.
This commercial became a meme before the internet, back when office fax machines were all we had.
Definitely. I faxed this to all my friends.
Those are the fax.
"I don't have a fax machine, I just make believe I'm faxing". :D
That’s very true. Suddenly, people would insert other occupations into this often repeated phrase that all started with this television commercial. I”m not a lawyer, but I play one on TV. I’m not an axe murderer, but I play one on TV. I’m not a high school chemistry teacher who got inoperable lung cancer and then decided to manufacture methamphetamine, but I play one on TV.
Did you guys actually send “memes” or proto memes over fax?
The "I'm not a doctor but I play one on TV" line is a legal disclaimer. They couldn't use a real doctor, nor could they imply that they were using a real doctor.
No shit duh... kinda the point... Also, even if it was areal doctor, I would have believed it all the same. In fact I was more inclined to believe this commercial. Doctors can be bough as easy as hookers.
Whatever.
Why couldn't they use a real doctor?
seems like he didn't need to say any of that, and he would then just be a regular 'actor'. I think they wanted to give the role more respect by using that line (although it's an absurd way to increase the prestige of his role).
"I'm not a Proctologist , but I play an asshole on T.V."
Sounds more like gay porn but cool story
I say this to my patients all the time. Ha Ha!
This is the most brilliant commercial of all time.
OK. Calm down.
The most memorable line on a commercial since "That's a spicy meatball!"
Don't forget "When E.F. Hutton talks, people listen." although that might have been a regional thing since he was a politician.
"WHERE'S THE BEEF"! Wendy's.
nah. .'Ring around the collar' is...
meat-a-ball
I can't believe I ate the whole thing.
We need this honesty in 2020..
"Im not a sick person but i play one on tv" 🥴
LoL!
I’m not a doctor, but I do play Jack Abbott on Y&R.
And before that he was Dr. Cliff Warner on All My Children
I am not an actor, but I play one on TV
Thanks for making me realize how old I am because I am well familiar with the origin of that phrase as being this commercial...
Well now he's not a businessman who lives in Genoa City. But he plays one on tv.
😂
“Have a seat…on me”
My dad would always say “I’m not a doctor, and I don’t play one on tv”
I was just asking my mom who the actor was that did this commercial. She couldn't recall. I wondered if I could Google it which led me here. Thanks for the upload!
"I'm not a doctor, but I'm also not doctor."
Maybe it is just the age group that I am in, but I only remember the Chris Robinson version.
That line “I’m not a Doctor, but I play one on TV” was used by Jon Beradino aka Dr Steve Hardy from General Hospital on an episode of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Lol
This was back when Peter Bergman was on All My Children as Dr Cliff Warner.
Loved All My Children !❤❤❤
Oh how do I not remember that episode of Fresh Prince? I also watched GH at that time. Now I want to find that episode.
@@susana7968 The episode of Fresh Prince is called “Ill Will" (S 2:Ep 18) Feb 10, 1992
Yes he did! There are no copies on UA-cam that I could find but he was the first in his white coat, dressed like Marcus Welby. I remember because Marcus Welby was one of my favorite shows as a kid. Look it up, it was Robert Young.

I found this where he says I'm not a doctor but I play one of TV but it's a Sanka advert
Troy McClure!
Nope Troy McClure was played by the late Phil Hartman.
I'm not an Abbott, but I played one on TV
Still does -- 28 years (and counting). That's over twice as long as he played the doctor on All My Children.
Truth is he is not an Abbott either. Philip Chancellor is his biological father, not John Abbott
@@Mark-sj3xb he isn't Philip's ether.
HAHA
This was first used by Robert Young in a Sanka commercial in the early 70s. It was already famous by this time.
? I will look but an article just cited this so not sure you're right.
YOU NEED ONE OF THE ADULT FORMULAS!!!
Formula 44..
`i am not a doctor but i play one on TV`
classic
Our doctor at the time told us that Formula 44D was "worthless."
But... how could that be; it tastes like Jagermeister!
@@charlescameron6017 As an adult, I found out that Jaegermeister was far more effective, so that’s what I reach for whenever I have the flu with a cough.
I'm not a gynacologist, but I play one on TV. Here, let me take a look at that....
I'm not a TV but I play one on a doctor
I remember the original version with Chris Robinson, I was a big "General Hospital" fan at the time so I always got a big kick out of it. Vicks stopped using him due to his tax evasion conviction. Some think Robert Young said the line for Sanka previously, which isn't true, that's the Mandela Effect at work.
For years, I would have lost money betting it was Robert Young (Marcus Welby) who said it.

@@acebongboy you bet right he said it I found this where he says I'm not a doctor but I play one of TV but it's a Sanka advert ua-cam.com/video/MvIM-1XZ6VU/v-deo.html
That was a good commercial
I'm not a doctor, but I like to walk into hospitals and pretend I am.
What???? You're kidding.
Somehow I remembered Robert Young (best known as Marcus Welby M.D.) saying this, but I guess it was just because of his Sanka commercials. Not being a soap-fan, I know Bergman better for this slogan than for anything else.
I found this where he says I'm not a doctor but I play one of TV but it's a Sanka advert ua-cam.com/video/MvIM-1XZ6VU/v-deo.html
It's a great line. Dr. Phil should use it.
The Ultimate Weapon against cough. Peter Bergman was a great salesman
trust me im wearing a white coat and a stethoscope and im on TV lol
I swore that commercial was in the 70's
This reminds me of those Holiday Inn Express commercials. "I'm not a doctor but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night."
Classic what brilliant marketing to use a soap opera MD to hawk OTC health care products to a captive audience of housewives
Who's here because of Ben shapiro?
My Critical thinking philosophy professor showed us this today! He remembers seeing this from long time ago and he was saying to us, "Are you freaking kidding me?" Because if he's not a Dr. but plays one on tv, would you take his word? I would say the same, are you kidding me? NO!
+dudetocartman I mean, that's the joke. Your professor sounds kinda dumb.
Actually I feel like people are just looking for reasons to find the premise incredulous, but it makes perfect sense
This isn't a less-litigious version of our modern ubiquitous prescription medication commercials, this is an ad for nonprescription crap you'd buy in your grocery store. The idea is that while you may need a doctor to tell you what you need for, like, a thyroid condition... you can let anyone with a little sense advise you on your cough syrup purchase.
Who else really wanted to see the next commercial?
Me. Festisite? (For your avatar)
Ben Shaprio.
No it wasn't. Robert Young's bit was to suggest that his jumpy friends try a decaffeinated coffee. He never said, "I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV.
I found this where he says I'm not a doctor but I play one of TV but it's a Sanka advert ua-cam.com/video/MvIM-1XZ6VU/v-deo.html
Usually when a video of something older than 20 years is posted on UA-cam a bunch of dorks jump out of the woodwork to talk about how everybody back then was smarter and better. But not this video this video for some mysterious reason.
Everyone then thought it was ridiculous.
I thought this was with the guy who played marcus welby.
See above. It was Robert Young, I saw it myself when I was a kid. Google it.
Your right I found this where he says I'm not a doctor but I play one of TV but it's a Sanka advert ua-cam.com/video/MvIM-1XZ6VU/v-deo.html
I'll take this ad over the endless parade of prescription drug ads nowadays. At least the Vicks ad didn't say "possible side effects may include kidney failure, depression, blindness, hair loss or death." Just make sure to ask your pretend tv doctor if Vicks Formula 44 is right for you.
And Vicks 44m: "M" for methamphetamine.. chock-full of Ephedrine young Skywalker...
Don't forget "Awesome" Datson 280ZX. VO Hurley Parrish.
This would be fine if it was some sort of tongue-in-cheek satire bit, but this is dead serious.
I am not a doctor but I play one on the internet
I'm not a freemason but I play one on TV.
Hello, I'm not an actor but I play one on TV.
ben shapiuro WHY U SEND ME HERE
I'm not a doctor but I play one on TV
This guy was eventually indicted for tax evasion
Up until the time, probably the stupidest thing ever said in a commercial.
good ol Jack Abbott lol..Formula 44..they dont make that good stuff anymore..wish they did .pretty easy to identify 44,44D, and 44 M for the all in oner..
Thank you for the fun comment. We are young and the restless fans. I liked him on General Hospital also. He sure has aged well.
musta been the rays he caught down in Guantanamo Bay lol (he was born at the Naval base)
It's Jack Abbot
This is an example of a misuse of authority fallacy.
Reminds me of actors doing political ads.
Vicks 44D is good with vodka.
While it is stupid, there is a law against having doctors, or anyone implied to be a doctor, hawking products on TV.
It is completely stupid, but no law was broken. If he didn't say at the beginning "I'm not a doctor" there may be a case...
The spongbob movie game reference this
Jack Abbott was a doctor? I don't think so...
Jack Abbott!
LOL. THIS IS WHAT FAUCI SHOULD SAY.
For those that do a term paper on the Trump phenom, this definitely needs to be included in the origins part.
Trumpanzee/Dorkald Chump/Donores Trumbridge was not the President but he played one on TV. He's a mean person, always was. I honestly and truly never liked anything about him.
"You can't buy anything more effective."
How about Vitamin C, Vitamin D3, Zinc, Turmeric, Apple Cider Vinegar, and Colloidal Silver?
