  • I have sold my Yamaha MODX and replaced it with another synth. I was loyal Yamaha fan for over 20 years but this realtionship could not last any longer after I have bought MODX.

You make a good point. I am a very experienced software engineer and bought a Yamaha Montage to replace my Korg. Alas, it just sits in the corner covered up because after a hard day's work I just can't face fighting against the complexity of that damned interface. There are some good tutorials, but none from Yamaha.

There are many videos from the Yamaha Synth Official channel explaining a lot of stuff. I got the MODX8+ about a month ago and I learnt a lot from those videos. Reading the manual is also very helpful. As you watch the videos, also go back to the manual to see what it says about that point. It's amazing!

Totally understand what you say about time, energy, and enjoyment .
The big sounds on the MODX take up multiple parts, but cannot be assigned to the same MIDI channel. Shame.
MODX is the same hardware as the MODX+, just restricted in software. Shame

Thank you - just a quick one - I have not tried the MODX+ - is there a big difference between the original MODX? Thanks

@@amateurmusicstudio The MODX and MODX+ are the same hardware. They sound identical
Only difference is on the MODX+ an extra 0.75Gb of user memory has been unlocked, and an extra 64voice polyphony unlocked on the FM synth.

@@UFO-Ark Thank you for the provided answer. That is interesting. I may get it one day to try and compare. Thank you!!!

I can fully understand what you say and feel. Not alle keyboards are created equal, nor are the players. Luckily, you are happy now with the Korg.
But I asked myself: What does this guy want to tell his viewers? What is the message of the video? How can I benefit from it?
I played and owned several keyboards of several brands, but the MODX is in my opinion the best all-round synth I ever had. None of my Yamahas had an interface similar to any other. DX7, Clavinova, P80, P250, CP4, Motif XF and now MODX - all quite different in many aspects and so are the operating systems. Love it or leave it, that‘s the eternal principle.
When you look at the UA-cam statistics, you‘ll see a very rapid decline in the the viewing duration chart, I guess.

Thank you for your feedback - I appreciate it and I understand that all of us would have different opinions regarding the subject. I am glad to know that you like the MODX a lot.
I guess it is worth mentioning that I have started with PSR-SQ16 moving onto QS300 before getting MOTIF so from my perspective these were similar.
I also had a few Korgs (i4x, Karma, Krome), Yamaha MX, MOXF in between before getting the MODX. I have used to having comprehensive sequencer on the keyboard and prefer to work that way so MODX would not fit my workflow: it does not have a proper sequencer and the one it has was not done in the best possible way (from my point of view).
On the other hand - the sounds on MODX are amazing especially when it comes to real instruments like guitars etc. So, I cannot say completely dislike it - it is just does not work for me. I guess, I was expecting the latest generation of workstations from Yamaha to work the same way as the previous generation in terms of having a sequencer etc. Once again - thank you for your feedback. 🙂

@@amateurmusicstudio All good. I didn't mean to badmouth your video in any way. As I said, I fully understand what you are saying. I would like to see more constructive discussion on UA-cam anyway than just the usual short comments.
I also see some shortcomings of MODX, especially with the MIDI implementation. I'm also more of a hobbyist than a professional musician, but a professional teacher and I always think of the addressee of the videos. What would be of use to them? My own free offer of custom performances on Soundmondo or downloadable libraries together with the demo videos on UA-cam is not aimed at a mass audience either, but some keyboard players around the world are happy to see it and can apply it in their musical activities.
We are all happy about videos that transport the fun of making music. Too much criticism tends to spoil the fun. 😀

@@xaverk Many many thanks! One of the reasons I have got this channel up and running is to be able to discuss thing interesting to me with other people. I did not realise you have a lot of videos on your channel - thank you for sharing those!!! 🙂

the yamaha modx the best? the drums are very weak, please compare the sound of a yamaha motif xs with the modx. the motif has much more punch and power. the modx unfortunately lacks that. and it's not easy to use, i don't know why yamaha didn't program a step sequencer for drums like in the roland fantom or the korg nautilus.. it's not that difficult ;-) but i think yamaha assumes that everyone works with a computer with a daw 🙄 but that's not the case.. :-)

@@djguenthro3485 I also understand what you want to express. I own a Motif XF8 and I think that the Motif has somewhat better analog-digital converters, maybe. It was more than 3x the price of my MODX, so I expect/accept some quality compromises with the MODX. The corresponding samples themselves seem to be the same in MODX as well as in the Motif. I do not miss a step sequencer for drums, but this is due to special requirements and preferencies different keyboarders have. But since I got the MODX, I never wanted to shlepp the Motif to a gig any more.
