    It actually super fun to watch you get ready because you are showing the more human side to getting dressed. And what I mean by that is I’m sure plenty of women made the same mistakes as you did back them. “Ugh I forgot to put my stay on before doing my hair!”
    “Ugh, my jacket has opened and I look like an idiot!”
    “I’m all ready to go milk some cows!... crap I forgot to put on my shoes first!”
    You know this probably happened because no one was was thinking “this is the 1770s so I gotta put my clothes on in a historically accurate order/way!” They just got dressed and I’m sure they made mistakes and forgot a step or two occasionally! 😂

    • @AlexaFaie
      @AlexaFaie 4 роки тому +71

      I mean I know the rule about boots before corset, but I've still managed to put my corset on and then remember I hadn't put my shoes on. Or I'll put on tight leggings which are hard to roll the ankle up on and then realise I forgot to put my socks on first and so either have to struggle to get them to sit under comfortably or take the leggings back off to put the socks on. So if I can forget, I'm sure they did too.

      @Princess of Fireflies they did have some 1940s and even 50s inspired dresses in season 2 but the rest is quite accurate. They got all the layers and nothing else is made to look more modern.
      In addition to that, the 40s/50s inspired dresses were all seemingly designed by Claire in the show (at least that's the case with the red dress) and since she is originally from that time it's perfectly fine to have her want something that reminds her of her time. And even these dresses are made to be relatively 18th century accurate with the right shapes/silhouettes.

      They kind of are....50's circle skirts are 'socially acceptable' for everyday wear now. They are super easy to make, look great in wool, and the fullness means you can put huge pockets on both sides & fill 'em up & no-one can tell. This is my everyday wardrobe. I wear them with a fitted cotton blouse & a light cotton cardigan to keep the sun off in summer. It looks good with old fashioned shoes without looking too 'costumey', too. I get a 32 inch long skirt out of a queen size sheet, a fitted double sheet, a double sided single doona cover, or sometimes curtains. Cheapest way to buy large pieces of fabric from op shops.

    I used to be a street actor at the Renaissance Faire at Black Point, Atherton, California many years ago. I found that the clothing from bygone eras was MUCH more comfortable than anything we have today. In particular, I had a brown corduroy bodice that I wore with a full shift that was THE most comfortable garment I've ever owned. Like you, I seriously consider wearing this type of garb because, I think, it looks better and it certainly feels better. I hope the say comes when we can wear whatever we want without raising eyebrows. I'd love it. Also, I'm shocked to learn that clothing back then was just pinned. I can't imagine wearing clothing full of straight pins :O Thanks for your channel. I love learning about all of this. I've learned so many new things I never knew before and it's wonderful. Thanks, again. :)

    what i love about 18th century clothes is it addresses modern problems
    -clothes design to expand incase you got an all you can eat buffet
    -skirts designed around having huge pockets, instead of you know, fake pockets
    -cardigans are cozy yet stylish, jacket is just a cotton cardigan
    -muffin tops are the rage, don't have one? here's a bum roll!
    -save the environment, dont shower, hide yor greasy hair

    • @idamedby4193
      @idamedby4193 Рік тому

      Also:
      - breast support that actually supports something
      - a chemise underneath saves on laundry a lot
      - layers of petticoats and wool stockings are just genius during cold winters
      - covering more skin means less sun exposure, so no need to constantly reapply sunscreen on most of your body during the day
      - clothing made to last a very long time and constructed with future alterations in mind to suit changing fashion and general needs

    I've wondered avout the pockets, because I've seen them worn underneath the skirt, but on the Norwegian bunad we wear it on top of the skirt like you do here, so it makes more sense to me now!! (We usually hang it from a silver or brass lock.) Also I heard about someone who actually used an IKEA duvet cover as her bunad apron instead of the expensive "real" one because it's still historically accurate ayyy

      @@Hi11is I think about actual decorated pockets similar in style that Karolina showed in the video, instead of much less attractive looking fanny packs. Concept is similar, but execution is different. I feel if we got wearable decorative but usable pockets, it would freshen up the usual casual looks especially women have.
