The one with the perfect melt pool was in the center, catching residual heat from the two next to it. I've had this happened several times when I've tested them that close together (tin and glass). You'll also notice the small amount of wax not melted yet is nearly always on the colder side of the jars.
Try spacing them out a foot apart next time. ;)

I tend to test mine through the whole night. I test it on a granite top with insulated bottom with tile floors, etc. AND, I get up at least twice a night (for other reasons.) If I get a full good melt pool, I will cool it, trim the wick and the relight it. HOWEVER, I just saw your video pointing out that you knock off the crusting while letting it burn. I am going to try that. I have watched many candle making vids over the last two years. YOURS are the most helpful. The cut right to the heart of the issues.

Wicks have been a pain in my ass since the start. I ended up settling with Ribbon wicks from Northwood. By far the best experience next to wood wicks in my opinion.

From everything I’ve seen and read, would these not fall into the category of “large dancing” flames that you don’t want? Or were the flame heights and size ok?

Hi Jeff, I’ve been testing my Golden Wax 464 scented candle over the last week as I’m just about launch my website and as you and Wade say test test test. Today was the longest I had 5 candles burning. Started with 2 Hrs, 3 hrs, 4 hrs, 6 hrs, 8 hrs and today 12 hours. All performed brilliantly. Jars did not get too hot, except for one which was Vanilla. Vanilla also had soot on one side big time and the HTP wick 126 was leaning on the side instead of standing straight. That side had lot of soot. I assume it’s Vanilla FO which is a heavy oil and made the jar hotter and flame larger than the others. New Vanilla batch I made today I wicked down, hoping for smaller flame and less soot. Am I correct in my assumptions? Sue Australia

Most of the suppliers tell you to wick down to stop mushrooming. What’s confusing is your smaller wicks are mushrooming. It’s the complete opposite.

That's when the tip of the wicks starts to puff up, or bloom, or get balled up like you see in the video.

    • @sarafenning8566

Flames flickering is significant because it means there is a lot of heat. An over-wicked candle will flicker constantly and generate too much heat. This can cause all kinds of different problems.

Are you using IGI6006? If so, try LX16 wicks. I'm actually testing IGI 6006 with 8% fragrance load in a 9 oz jar with LX16 as I'm typing this. Two hours in and the hit throw is incredible and melt pool is not quite to full melt. Virtually no mushrooming at this point.
