John McCormack - Good-bye (1913)

Written by G.J. Whyte-Melville and Sir Francesco Paolo Tosti and recorded by John McCormack on May 1, 1913, "Good-Bye" (Addio) was one of Paulo Tosti's initial successes in his adopted home of England; along with other of his songs, such as Mattinata, Forever and Serenata, it would help to solidify his popularity and establish the song style known as the "ballad alla Tosti."
As much as any of his songs, Goodbye captures the blend of elements that made Tosti so unique: his Italianate lyricism and affinity for the voice (acquired honestly in his studies at the Naples Conservatory), and his willingness to adapt those qualities to the sentimental English-language ballads that were so popular in salons of the time. This made his songs immensely popular with turn-of-the-century concert singers.
Goodbye is heard just as frequently in Italian as "Addio," and occasionally in French as "Chanson de l'adieu." Early in the twentieth century, the song was satirized by African-American comedian Bert Williams in his "I Want to Know Where Tosti Went (When He Said Goodbye)."
