Photographing Birds of the Grasslands: Looking for a RARE Bird

  • In this video, I head back out to a grassland habitat that I visited this past winter. I was excited to see how many other species of birds were present in this habitat compared to in the winter and I was not disappointed. This habitat is managed with controlled burns, so the fields are filled with blooming wildflowers and an abundance of life. I ended up exploring this habitat on two separate days, because on the first day I found a species that I had never seen before, an Eastern Meadow Lark. This is a rare species in this region due to the declining grassland habitat in the Northeast. I spent the two days trying to get close enough to the bird to be able to get photos and video of their behavior. While I was trying to photograph these birds, I was able to find and photograph a large number of other species of birds that were also present in the habitat. These species included many different sparrows, warblers, and buntings. I even caught a glimpse of a rare visitor to the area a Blue Grosbeak.
I hope you enjoy this video and the variety of species I was able to locate. Be sure to check out my other videos in my wildlife photography playlist and subscribe if you enjoyed my content!

Thank you for watching! The vastness of the grassland really does allow for some nice environmental shots.

What wonderful videos. These are some of the best on the Internet! If I may, I would like to make a small suggestion. You show so many different bird species that are not familiar to me here in Canada. I would appreciate it if you could put some text identifying the species that is on the screen. While you do a good job mentioning them, sometimes it is difficult to be sure which species is on screen when you show a montage of B-roll.
Please keep up the excellent work and I am sure your channel will grow. It is clear that you put a great deal of work into your videos and I want to let you know that it is noticed and appreciated.

Thank you for watching! I will definitely work on including the names in the videos in the future. I did it for a few videos but then stopped due to time constraints. Thanks again for watching!

Great job! I have found Eastern Meadowlarks to be very difficult to approach in the field. I've had the best luck with setting up near a favorite singing perch and waiting, especially near sunset. Good luck!

Although you have a long camera lens, do you feel the binoculars help more to spot the birds? I found it difficult to manage both.

I do find it easier to initially spot Wildlife with the binoculars. Trying to find birds using the longer heavy lens is more time consuming and in many cases the birds had already flown away by the time I found and focused on where they were. I do agree though that having and caring both can be annoying at times.

@ToddDeWaldPhotography I am in the market for a new set of binoculars. It looks like you have a pair of Vortex. What magnification are you finding the best? What model are you using? BTW Amazing day of birding and photography for you. Congrats

I currently use the Vortex Crossfire HD at 10x magnification. I opted for the 10x because I tend to use them mostly for small birds and needed the higher magnification. I would say 8x magnification would be the lowest I would go. For my needs the 10x is easy enough to find the birds even with higher magnification. Thanks for watching!
