Thanks a million for this video. I have a 2021 Crosstrek sport and your video taught me to figure out what type of LED light bulbs my car needs but more importantly, how to remove the old lightbulbs and install the new ones. This video saved me some money on installation cost from the dealer.
DUDE! Thanks a ga-zillion for taking the time to make this. While visiting my BFF, she asked me to help her change her headlamp bulb, which had been out for months (she assumes I’m a little more handy than most of her other girlfriends since I ride motorcycles, but in actuality, I’m a total goober when it comes to mechanics). BUT, I’m good friends with Google, so I hopped online and hunted around a bit. Found a few videos (which were mildly helpful, but not completely so), started to get discouraged, and then suddenly (angel chorus erupts here, followed by a dramatic pause)... we stumbled upon YOUR video! In 5 minutes, we had it done. Grateful for folks like you who share of their expertise, so us frugal do-it-yourselfers can get the job done instead of getting taken advantage of at the auto shop, GOBS of GOOD KARMA coming your way. :-)
Thanks! This is a great guide. I kept going to the dealership to change the bulbs when they burned until I found out how easy it is to replace them yourself. Much cheaper for sure!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! I do have a video out for the light bar. Actually both of them. They are some of my most viewed vids. Here is the link for the upper light bar ua-cam.com/video/G9GMjlnvH5U/v-deo.html
Just come across this video and wanted to know if for 2017 Crosstreks, do I have to replace the Housing and add a capacitor to the headlight? I dont want to get the bulbs and watch it flicker when i install. Also heard they can potentially damage the housing because of how hot they get. Don't know if any of this is true, havent seen anything about the housing getting damaged online but have seen a few things about how certain housings don't reflect the light correctly and can potentially make seeing at night worse. Any help would be great
@@ninjarider84 Look for "one to one" bulbs that place the LEDs in the exact same position as the halogen filament. The emission from the single point of light is whiter and brighter, but it should not be higher. The lens in the reflector won't know the difference as long as the source of light is from the same place. Improperly installed LEDs or bulbs that don't emulate the halogen filament location is what scatters the light because it is not coming from the same location as what the reflectors were designed for.
Can you show us what the bulbs look like from the lense side not turned on? Are the leds pointing to the left and right or up and down? Makes a difference in how the light is projected.
Just saw this video. So far how have they been running in the halogen housing of your Premium Crosstrek? Trying to see if LEDs work or if a retrofit /projector kit is better.
I installed them almost 3 years ago and haven’t changed them since. In fact, right after this, I changed out the high beams and the reverse lights for LED’s as well. Absolutely love them. So much brighter that halogens and makes it easy to see the road at night. With the bright led reverse lights, it makes the image in the backup camera screen perfectly clear at night. I still highly recommend them. No issue with overheating or burning out. One of the best upgrades I’ve made to the car and at a fraction of the cost of projector kits.
hey! hoping to upgrade my crosstrek lights but want to make sure they aren't blinding others. any tips on how to purchase accordingly and find someone to install?
Dude it seems so simple, I’m kind of pissed off because I did exactly what you said but I burned out my first light bulb and the other one didn’t work. Then I took my old headlights back got a refund got some new ones that I thought were even better and they don’t work either. Do I need a specific headlight? I have a 2017 Subaru cross track
Hey I recently got a 2017 Forester Touring to go with our 2017 Crosstrek premium. Love the headlights on the forester, is there any aftermarket head lights for the Crosstrek>? searching now but not finding much. thanks,
No, there are no aftermarket lights for it. You can try looking up the same generation Imprezza, cause they are literally the same car. But you won't find any. The only thing you can do, is take the light housing apart and mod it your self. Requires much more knowhow, not something that's worth doing.
Hey StarDude, new subscriber here and I recently got my first Subaru Crosstrek 2016. Back in HS I drove a Xfinity that had Xenon headlights and I loved how crisp the road looked with them. Is it possible to get those as a replacement for my Crosstrek?
Definitely! Check out the Morimoto HID Xenon Projectors. Stunning looks! Contact them and they can guide you in the best way for the Crosstrek. www.morimotohid.com/projectors.html
Any light/bulb error on dashboard (bulb-out indication)? Because many cars need CANBus LED bulbs to do not show those erros. What about Subaru Crosstrek? Thank you very much!
As long as the connections are good and the ECU can read the bulbs are connected you should be good. You can also buy Led bulbs that have the proper connections to connect to the light housing harness which will prevent that error. It's just a single positive and negative connection on the crosstrek. As long as some version of your car has leds you shouldn't have a problem, because they all use the same ECU. It also depends if your car can even throw a headlight code. If you are unsure, unplug your headlight and turn your car on. If it doesn't throw a headlight light warning then it doesn't matter.
See, the thing and the problem with LED bulb in a halogen housing is the tremendous amount of glare. I actually tried LED on my 2017 crosstrek and it looked like i had high beams on. definitely not safe.
+Edmar the video is to mainly show how to change out the headlights of the Crosstrek. People are free to install whatever bulbs they would like. My next light upgrade will be a headlight refit. No more LED's
Yep, had a 16 Crosstrek, very bad glare, light scatters everywhere. I ended up buying an 18 Orange Limited Crosstrek that comes with LED headlights, they are wonderful.
Edmar headlightrevolution.com/bulb-style/h11-h8-h9/ check in here you will fined what you need cheep quality leds don’t have correct beam pattern that’s why... so you are blinding everyone
That is not true. What you are describing is improperly aimed beams. LEDs need to be adjusted to point down more, because their beam is brighter and larger than a halogen bulb. When aimed properly they aren't blinding and just look like brighter whiter headlights.
Is there a way to change the led's on an 18 Crosstrek limited? The LED's are fine, but if I want to get brighter ones down the road, can it be done without going to the dealer?
Of course! I’m sure it is not that difficult. I just need to get my hands on a 2018 to do it. I can’t imagine it being much more difficult than the 2017 though. Dealers are way too expensive for that.
I know changing halogens is easy but the LED's in a Limited look like they are surrounded by a bunch of plastic and looks difficult to access. Maybe when spring hits and it doesn't rain 5 days a week, I will check it out more.
You can NOT change the bulbs because there is no bulb. Factory LED headlights are built around the chip hence the major difference between factory LED headlights and thesse junk aftermarket bulbs that don't actually give any Performance
They are great!! Still have them on. Haven’t received any complaints, no oncoming flashes or being flipped off. Lol. Driven behind police cars multiple times just to see what would happen and nothing. They help me see at night so they are staying on! Pun intended!

It handles very well!! I love it! Combined with the new springs (video coming soon) the ride is strong, great clearance, turning radius has decreased a bit, and overall confidence in driving is better that ever!
Just over 4 years and no noticeable change in brightness. They haven't burnt out. Just needed to clean up the plastic housing a bit to make it clear again, and now it is bright again!
