Rowan Atkinson was still playing Mr. Bean-like rubber-faced nerds on “Not the Nine O’Clock News”, and didn’t get his elegantly snarky Fawlty -esque persona until Ben Elton came on as writer for Black Adder II. Here, it’s considerably different (a smart Baldrick??). But the main focus was Atkinson and Richard Curtis trying to snub Shakespeare plays, which is why Brian Blessed’s king keeps shouting “Fresh horses!” In every episode.
No Ben Elton yet (IIRC), he was still doing The Young Ones. Joins the Black Adder team in Season/Series 2. Peter Cook mangling the Shakespeare is still delightful after all these years. Best guest star. Yeah, Blackadder 1 is very different from what comes after, but it's still very good.
A terrific cast , interesting you mentioned Mr Bean as it never occurred to me before , it's always interesting to watch this series . The way it's filmed with much more location , the middle ages being a less well known period and Baldrick being the sensible one doesn't quite work as well but still a good watch , as I think your reactions to the series are going to be .
@@Shelma32Reactions Rowan is such a juggernaut in the later seasons that it's all about him, but I love the Shakespeare parodies, the bigger budget and having more of an ensemble feel.
@@DarthRushy I've watched 3 episodes of this season so far and it feels very different but still like the other seasons in a way. I love seeing it outside though.
Fab, thank you! I'm so glad you had a good time, and that you got to revisit something your family enjoyed ❤. I have mixed feelings about this first series; on one hand I don't really like this version of the character of Blackadder, and of course he's pretty central! But on the other, the medieval era is one of my favourite periods of history, so the settings and scale are a real treat. And of course the actors are amazing.
I tend to think of the original Black Adder as a malevolent version of Mr Bean, if that helps. Also, between Blackadder the Third and Blackadder Goes Forth is a Christmas special called Blackadder's Christmas Carol, based on... well, I'm sure you can work that out. On top of that, there's Blackadder Back and Forth, which came ten years after Goes Forth, and was written to celebrate the turn of the millennium. Both have been available on iPlayer along with the main series, but I don't know if that's still the case.
I know that Christmas Carol is available on ITVX but Back & Forth isn't. Neither are sadly available on BBC iPlayer atm. I'll have to look about for Back & Forth when the time comes.
i remember when the head of Comedy telling Richard Curtis Yes there’s so much there in series 1 but something was Missing Ben Elton was brought in as a writer Said this needs to be in a studio and Baldrick needs to be the stupid one Not many comedies get a 2nd Chance i think mainly because blackadder from Series 2 was cheep to make 😂😂😂
I have this series on VHS. The 1st season is a bit of a slog, as they hadn't really "found" the show's identity yet, but seasons two-four are hilarious--much better than Mr. Bean.
Aw I love Mr. Bean but I totally get he's not everyone's cup of tea. This first season gets alot of flack because the audience was use to what we saw in the later seasons even Rowan Atkinson and it's creator Ben Elton himself admitted it as being the worst season but personally this and the fourth seasons were my absolute favourite I like how it evolves from dumb Blackadder to smart Blackadder and from smart Baldrick to dumb Baldrick I love that it was the reverse and that it starts off from the medieval times this season and even though if it wasn't the best season you had to start somewhere alot of reactors skip the first season at get straight to the second but I'm glad to see a reactor starting with the first season first otherwise why start a series at all and not watch the first season. I highly recommend checking out a 1980 film called "Flash Gordon" which Brian Blessed also stars in if you not seen it already it's campy but a fun film.
I think I do prefer what I remember from the other seasons (which may be from one episode of each or all of it, I really have no idea lol). But it's still so much better than the initial feeling I had years ago when I first attempted to watch this season.

Like you I find characters like Mr Bean uncomfortable to watch , the same with Frank Spencer . They were both so popular I thought I must be alone .
27:23 - “Yes! Get on with it!! YES, GET ON WITH IT!!!!!” - Monty Python and the Holy Grail

There is an actual pilot episode with some differences.
Oh, let's fricking go! This is gonna be spectacular. The first series is my favourite
It's so much better than I first thought.

@@Shelma32Reactions Will you be watching the specials too?
This is a fun season. My favorite episode, & 1st one I ever saw, season one, episode 5.
13:32, yes, early Baldrick is kind of smart, at points like this he's almost a warped voice of conscience...
It feels so weird yet still so Baldrick lol
@@Shelma32Reactions Apparently, he went on to play "The Sheriff (of...?😉)" in "Maid Marian and her Merry Men". Will need to look that up.
26:55 - Macbeth reference? The 3 witches?
It definitely has to be a reference, I just can not remember where it's originally from, lol.
@@Shelma32Reactions also, Uncle Richard "borrowed" Henry V St Crispin day speech.
Percy "arriving late to the battle" [Bosworth Field] is also an inside reference, since in-show he's the Duke Of Northumberland

I’m not big on season 1 much funnier from season 2-4
The first season is the weakest but it’s still better than any other sitcom from that year
