The summer of '88 was the summer of G"N"R no band at that time could touch them. That summer, this band was firing on all cylinders. "Appetite" went to #1 on billboard album chart a year after its release. Sweet Child hit #1 soon after that.
The drugs, drinking, and partying was still an issue, but they didn't let it get out of control until later on. Then that coincided with Axl turning into more of a control freak, and then Adler getting fired and Izzy quitting, and it all went downhil after that.

Undoubtedly, Guns N' Roses, since its inception, was programmed to transform the conceptions of Rock N' Roll from the late '80s and set the rules in the early '90s. The best rock band, with a rockstar attitude and chemistry from its essence, kicked down the door of those 'panty-melting' bands of the '80s, damn cheesy ones that only sang 'love' in every song. GN'R showed and rubbed in the world's face its raw, unfiltered origin from the streets of L.A.

It's 2024 and I got some observations on this band and the absolute masterpiece peak performance!
First, we have the beat that is this pop/cow bell/glam foundation. Steven "popcorn" Adler (for bouncing up and down while flaying his arms in a round show bizz way) was part of the pretty boy Dolls/Hanoi Rocks/Poison/Warrant kind of look while not being that far removed from Tommy Lee himself. If you know the backgrounds you know that sounds like this springs from absolute trauma in the hollywood sunset blvd underbelly. He was the "fun" guy in the band and it was clear he was compensating for what he and others went through. Love Adler and he was essential.
Second you got Duff McKagen. The quiet giant. The one that probably could kick the most ass in the band. This is their punk influence that goes back to his love for Prince to Black Flag. If there is any doubt to what he is bringing, go to Rocket Queen or to this "jungle" interlude. When he did the tribute to Johnny Thunders his singing practically comes through on this display of thunder. When this band getsin a rumble, he is the man you want for back up.
Third Izzy Stradlin. The man that obviously didn't give a shit about the fame. He is the true hippie. You get yourself a mix of his country uncle background, to his love for Dylan, to even a bit of swing jazz from his grandmother. This dude is the man you smoke some weed with and chill. Oh note that locomotive 2 step whistle sound in the interlude here. I can feel so much chugging along like a rhythm freight train that makes a mess of ya. He is the dude that is gonna give you the finger and barely mean it.
Fourth the Slash man. As has been told....with all the Eddie Van Halen hair band imitators, this dude does not apply. Him being half black, he clearly brings some soul to the band. You clearly got everything from Jimmy Page to Santana to even that top hat giving a Sammy Davis Jr. Bojangles vibe. Dude is a relic of the past and assaulting your ears with melodic dysfunction. If the rhythm is the set up, then this snakepit is gonna inject you with the lead straight to your spine while he drags that cigarette like a modern Hendrix doing the Star Spangled banner. His Jack drinking stumblin' sensitive man can fool ya.
Speaking of that, last but not least, the personality that no screwed up band can live without, Axl Rose. You got your Bon Scott, David Lee Roth...the dude that is the wild card. You don't know whether he is gonna bring the house down or literally, burn it to the ground. He is a fiery redhead with Freddie Mercury/Elton John/Elvis influence. Dude had the voice, the look and most importantly his rebellious small town religious restricted upbringing that has all the makings of infamous no filter tirades that caught this band's lighting in a bottle with perfection.
This chemistry was not going to last much longer than an album. Their implosion was unavoidable with this cocktail of talent.
One ingredient added (like a Dizzy Reed) or one replacement brought in (Matt Sorum) would never be the same magic. They made some great tunes after Appetite, but if I never got anything more, I think I would have been ok with that.
This performance alone is such great therapy. For those if us that didn't have the greatest year, remember to find that silver lining. I choose to see the cynicism and file it under f-it. Might as well add some irony with a dash of humor. To put all this into a blender, this is an example of the sum being greater than its parts. Happy New Year my friends of misery. This song is proof it does get better...or worse depending on context, but like the band says...Welcome all the same!
P.S. If you want some Christmas cheer think of this like the Riverbottom Nightmare Band come to life. Hell yeah!

And Then They Came For You.
Song to everyone that thought life had them on a pedestal because they earned it. No. It’s grace.

Some pointless trivia for anyone who’s interested regarding the comment made at the end by Eddie about Steven Adler throwing his drumsticks into the crowd:
He threw the second drumstick deliberately at Steven Tyler and the rest of Aerosmith under the impression they were best buddies after being on tour together. However walking off stage the penny dropped to Adler that Tyler was extremely pissed off and wanted nothing to do with him anyone after catching Adler doing heroin backstage after a gig or party whilst on tour together. Adler was heartbroken to realise that his heroes now found him repulsive.

I'm stunned that nobody in the audience is getting into it. If this footage was recreated for a movie the whole house would be on their feet goin nuts.
