    Crazy how Elder Dragons can have such vastly distinct mood in the music when you compare this theme for Ceadeus with something like Fatalis.

      The White Fatalis theme is another theme from MH that uses heavy percussion(and bells) with vocals to convey the majesty of the monster. It also has a very nice tension cycle that's a little more extreme than Ceadeus about building tension, but then releases it quickly. And then the theme from the Zenith version in Frontier takes everything great about the theme and makes a completely new theme that is somehow even more of everything the original theme felt like.

    Capcom had shared officially that they way they created the Diva's wyverian language is that they wrote the song in Japanese, translated it into French, then phonetically back into Japanese but with a few rules of alteration to make it sound a bit unique and consistant. The wyverian they are using in games like MHRise isn't the same, this is ancient Wyverian. As for the inspirations for the culture and sound of Wyverian, I will look for anything and let you know if I find anything! As others have mentioned, I cannot wait for you to analyze Amatsu's theme, but make sure you do each phase as it does change like the Ludwig fight from Bloodborne. Love your stuff, mate!

    On a serious note as opposed to my silly comment, this is just awesome. I have a very relevant quote for Ceadeus: "Monsters are tragic beings; they are born too tall, too strong, too heavy, they are not evil by choice. That is their tragedy." And Ishiro Honda's right. Ceadeus' horn is too big and he is half blind. He needs to get into that third area of the Underwater Ruins, and that blockage is in his way and making him cause earthquakes.
    Of course, Moonquake is very aggressive because he's fighting back against you now. Really gives the sense of fighing a true god as opposed to extinction incarnate like Fatalis.

    And fun fact; Canonically, you DON'T KILL CEADEUS
    In the final Cutscene, Ceadeus jumps out of the water with his Overgrown horn broken, after that, he runs away from Moga, Is one of the few Monsters that actually run away instead of being slain in the canon of MH History

    Very spot-on analysis like always. Ceadeus's theme isn't oppressive precisely because you're fighting it out of necessity with the goal of inflicting as little harm as possible and stopping it from putting Moga in further danger. Both phases show you're up against a titan that means no harm but is causing imminent destruction due to something it only does out of instinct (ex. we fight male Mizutsune in heat if and only if it creeps close to civilization). The feeling of insurmountability in the music, portrayed by the rising brass in phase 1 and the constant percussions in both, shows that us hunters can't really hope to square with it on our own. We're only able to do so thanks to the Shakalaka duo and some kind of divine blessing iirc, and even then, we're only doing so with the hope of repelling it and nothing else.
    --
    Regarding the exotic culture behind Caedeus's phase 2 music, I think you've hit the nail on the head. I'm not entirely sure which lands are within the Oceania region but, within the context of MH3's setting, I am very positive that this is based on the heavily coastal-based and sea-faring civilizations of the multiple cultures spawned from the ancient Austronesians which include the South East Asians, Micronesians, Melanesians, Polynesians, Maoris, Hawaiians, and even the ancient South Americans like the Mayans, Aztecs, and Incas (pls do correct whatever I get wrong here). It is often characterized by the heavy use of both pitched and unpitched percussions, chant-like vocals, and the overall ritualistic feeling.

    “Ceadeus is not a bad guy.”
    I really like this acknowledgement, because it’s something I kind of don’t like about Narwa and Ibushi in Rise.
    The things we fight are supposed to be monsters; animals. They’re just existing, but sometimes for the sake of survival we have to kill them. It’s an unfortunate part of the circle of life.
    But in Rise, Narwa and Ibushi outright state that their goal is to destroy things (by speaking through Hinoa/Minoto.) They’re actively malicious in the way a traditional villain would be and it just feels unfitting imo.

    • @Maverick52093
      @Maverick52093 2 роки тому +24

      I agree, although if I recall they want to destroy so that they may make way for their offspring. But for them it needs outright destruction. While the wyvern and beasts we do fight in MH are simply part of thr ecosystem, their are those that cause malice not just by existing, but their nature itself is outright aggressive. Valstrax actively seeks out monsters in its territory (practically anywhere it can see from the upper atmosphere), Deviljho and outright ecosystem destroyer, and almost all Fatalis which are a sign of doom based on their destructive nature. I think we just dislike Ibushi and Narwa because they vocalize that desire.

    • @xenomorphoverlord
      @xenomorphoverlord 2 роки тому +21

      Fatalis is even more actively malicious, and is far more like a traditional villain than Narwa and Ibushi. Narwa and Ibushi have the goal of to destroy things for the sake of having offspring. Fatalis just destroys because humans/wyverians are bad in its view

      Someone else in this comment section brought up this quote: “Monsters are tragic beings. They are born too strong, too tall, too heavy. They are not evil by choice. That is their tragedy.” This is honestly one of the core ideas behind Monster Hunter, something the game always reminds us of when we fight the bigger boss elder dragons. Amatsu, Ceadeus, Gogmazios, Zorah Magdoros, all are sympathetic. I feel like Rise has kind of disregarded all that theming for the sake of “BIG SUPER COOL EPIC BRO.” I mean, they literally claim Sunbreak’s final boss is the devil.

    • @randomnpc445
      @randomnpc445 2 роки тому +5

      @@tylermacgregor1320 I actually found out recently that the English translation for Rise gives off the wrong impression. It sounds like in Japanese, Allmother is simply a powerful creature wanting to breed as any animal would want to do. Nothing at all like the English translation that makes them seem morally evil.

    • @tylermacgregor1320
      @tylermacgregor1320 2 роки тому +12

      @@Maverick52093 None of these monsters actively have malicious intent though. Deviljho hunts ecosystems to extinction because if he doesn’t he’ll starve to death on account of his lightning fast metabolism. Valstrax actually used to be somewhat pacifistic, only attacking for food or self defense (or by accidentally ramming things mid flight, calling back to that quote, a tragic byproduct of his being). That attack on sight thing was only added in Rise, I guess they just thought it’d be “cool.” Even Fatalis, for all the stories about him, there isn’t a whole lot to back them up as hard factual canon, Iceborne even makes it a point that most records of that day have been lost. As far as we know, it could very well be just some animal defending it’s turf like everything else in the game. I kind of like the idea of all that mythos about Fatalis being this hate fuelled harbinger of death ironically being formed out of humanity’s hatred of the creature for driving them out of Schrade. A lot more in theme when you think about it like that.

Still looking forward to when you get around to Shara Ishvalda’s themes, though each time I feel like another theme pops up that I’d like to hear on top of that. Someone mentioned Vaal Hasak here in the comments and just the other day I noticed it had a harpsichord in it for the first time. One of, if not my favourite Elder Dragon theme. I think it's very interesting because it does a different thing compared to basically all of the other Elder Dragon themes. It's not oppressive, it's not intimidating or aggressive. It's just a creature that lives on a scale that is difficult to imagine for us small humans, not anywhere as bothered by us as it is by its overgrown horn that's causing it pain and blinding it.
    And then you get to phase 2 and it's as if the game said "Well, seems you've been asking for attention? There you go. Let's see if you can handle it." and the fight itself just complements this.

    What's sad about this particular Elder is that the danger it represents to Moga Village is entirely accidental. Half-blinded by it's own overgrown horn, it keeps bumping into the walls of the Island's underwater cave system, causing damage to the foundations which would result in the place sinking beneath the waves. Even worse, it's heavily implied that this is only a juvenile Ceadeus, which means that it dashing into Moga's caves isn't just because it's horn is overgrown, but also to hide from the only thing in the ocean that can actually threaten a young Ceadeus, the Elder Dragon Nakarkos.

    I interpret phase 2's theme as not a culmination of Ceadeus's anger, but rather a tribal chant along the lines of "Oh mighty Ceadeus, we praise your power and glory!". Basically a worship song. (I dunno the actual translations of the song)
    There are many monster themes that are obviously not about the monster itself, but what it feels like hunting it, or what the meaning behind hunting it has. Odibatras is a perfect example of this. The fast pace of the music does not match with the slow, cumbersome movement of Odibatras. You can feel that there is a story woven into the theme. The very last part of Gammoth's theme is another example: the fast pace is not a depiction of Gammoth herself, but rather the feeling of "Oh shit, that thing can STAND UP AND WALK? Nope nope nope nope". Shagaru Magala's theme sounds oddly heroic because it is a depiction of good vs evil = the hunter putting an end to the virus outbreak.
    If this track was supposed to depict Ceadeus's anger, I'd think it would be much more aggressive and booming.

Your videos really helped me when it comes to listening to music. Gotta love these moments I discover new things in something I always said I loved.
    "Benevolent", I don't know if the word is accurate, but I definitely like this word choice! I also like how you choose to say "animal" instead of "Elder Dragon"... I really think Ceadeus has that kind of vibe you spoke of.

    It took me ages, but I think this song, the second phase part at least, is in 7/4. It's very strange, especially since the melody is so scattered. It's perfect for a fight that takes place entirely underwater, where you're at the mercy of this massive whale dragon.

    You should listen to more of the classic series themes.
    Not only that but you may also want to compare the original versions of themes to their newer variations
    For example the Deviljho theme from 3U to GenU is quite different to the one from world in build up and effect
    It is definitely worth a listen and/or a deeper analysis in how and why the composers for the game chose to change parts for the new games

    I'm not a MH player myself, I just helped my friend moving the camera in the game some years ago, but gosh I enjoyed the fight with the Ceadeus, both for the music and the context: an enraged ancient dragon inside forsaken underwater ruins.

    I know how Wyverian was created via scrambling a japanese phrase through repeat translations but I had heard somewhere that the Wyverian specifically in 3rd Generation Monster Hunter games like this, which had an island theme, had some phonetic influences from languages originating with various polynesian and island nations like Fijian, Tahitian, Hawaiian, etc. I don't know how true that is, but it DOES kinda sound unique compared to previous and later iterations of the Wyverian language to my ear.

      @@DaviVasc It's still considered his theme officially as the official OST tracks for the games and the MH Orchestras call it "Tremble of the Land and Sea- Lagiacrus". He just shares it with the other monsters of the area which is a direct relation/connection to Rathalos sharing his theme with the Forest and Hills/Verdant Hills as Lagiacrus and Rathalos are considered direct rivals to each other with them having the parallels to one another even down to the theme songs. Another way to look at it is being the main Flagship Monsters of the series, they have such an important and imposing presence that their themes overtake those areas entirely because it's THEIR main territory and area to the point that other monsters aren't "allowed" by them to have their own themes so Lagi and Rathalos rule over the area with their themes. Essentially they're still there in spirit even when you're not physically hunting them because they have that much of an impact on those areas even more than other Flagships would. Although Zinogre seems to be his indirect new rival as Lagiacrus has his theme paired up with Zinogre's usually in the orchestras among the other relationships they have.

    I'm not sure if Davi can read this, but incase anyone is curious I believe the vocal style is more reminiscent to the classical singing of Ryukyu kingdom, now modern day of Okinawa province.
    Look up Okinawa Shima Uta (Island song), and Traditional Ryukyuan Music. A more well known example of adaptation to this singing scale is The Making of Cyborg from Ghost in the Shell.
    I'm not 100% sure and I'm far from expert, I think the Greek scale also work but it sound very similar to the scale in Ryukyuan music, which was once their court music in the past before the Ryukyu kingdom was conquered and assimilated by Japan. And since Ryukyu kingdom is also a pacific island culture, it also make sense to be inspire by them.

    the lore about ceadeus is that one of his horns is growing out of control and at this point it's so big he's constantly in pain. he smashes his head in the walls trying to alleviate that pain. note that while you're tring to "hunt him" he doesn't care at all, his horn hurts more than what you do to him. and when you manage to hurt him you only... well, shave him. that's, for me, why the theme is so peaceful, he's a magestic beast that doesn't care at all about you.
    now, for the second theme... well, shit got real, he's pissed you shaved his elder dragon beard and retaliates. the percussion shapes the song from the previous peaceful theme to a battle theme, however he's a god (ceadeus, cea, "sea" and "Deus" (god)) and god's have priest and priestess, and those priestess are telling the story of what's happening. and probably his behaviour is so slow paced because he's half blind (one horn blocked completely his eye)

    this theme is core to my heart and soul and my very way of Monster Hunter. Also the reason that his theme is more benevolent is that he's there not to fight, but because he's in pain. The whole reason for Ceadeus going to the cave is because he's trying to break his horns that have grown too big, only defending himself when the hunter attacks. Also the name of that song is called Ode To Life.
