I've completely relied on the ASPCA toxic and non toxic plant list when bringing plants in. Its such a great resource. Their hotline is incredibly helpful too. This is one of the reasons I've mainly kept hoyas and calatheas, and steered clear of most aroids
Harli! I had no idea eucalyptus was dangerous for my dog. I use an essential oil diffuser in my home every day. My dog has been sick. I’m so glad you included this in your video. Poor puppa
One thing to note with lilies - I had an incident where my cats managed to get hold of some lily leaves on a bouquet of flowers (I don't usually keep toxic plants in my house but these were a gift) and thankfully I immediately noticed they had eaten some. It will cause renal failure in cats within 24-48 hours, but if you get them to a vet as soon as it happens they can flush them out with charcoal and an IV drip. Saved both my cats lives ❤️
When they say “depression” they are not talking about feeling sad. They’re talking about an abnormal mentation… usually pets with low energy or who are feeling ill to the point of not wanting to get up would be described as “depressed.”
@@HarliG Yeah, thankfully they have to ingest A LOT to get neuro issues. In my experience they usually just get an upset stomach. It’s a pretty bitter plant so most pets won’t eat more than a few leaves 🙂
I have 3 fiesty parakeets that get into everything. It's been a challenge with them. Thank you for the free trial! This came at such a great time. Currently trying to figure out what to do with my life. I'm 42 and pregnant with my first baby. I want to find something I can do from home that isn't a 9 to 5. This will be a huge help! Thank you so much, Harli! You look stunning, as always! Be well!
Thank you so much for sharing! Keeping the plants out of reach and having a plant free space is definitely my go to. I also will put a safe plant in front of them from time to time and train them to not touch them. It might not be for everyone but knowing my dogs are trained not to be interested in them is just extra insurance in case a door is left open when I’m not home
Great timing, I just adopted a cat last weekend! Time to rearrange some plants so he can’t get to them, just in case. I’m sure most people know this already but lily flowers are very deadly to cats and can cause kidney failure, especially the pollen. So watch out for those as well!
I'm late to the video but thank you for mentioning essential oils!!! people seem to have no idea their diffusers have been the reason for their pets unexplained illnesses, such as neurological problems, seizures, and muscular/heart problems!
You'd be surprised how many people don't realize that sago palms are extremely toxic! I petsit/housesit and recently I stayed in a neighborhood where every other house had a sago palm. I had to let the owners know so they knew to be careful around those houses.
Last year I came home from work to learn my 2lb lionhead bunny learned to open her cage again(which had added locking parts we added shes very smart and watches how we open it) to find out she ate 2 and a half mature dieffenbachia leaves(both over 8in in length) and it felt like time stood still when I noticed. My heart SANK! I panicked calling emergency vet and they said there was nothing they could do because shes considered an "exotic pet" and recommended another emergency vet over my state line in PA who straight up told me the 2 hour drive would probably kill her. To this day I still have no clue how she survived! That plant wound up in the trash because it was so chewed up and while throwing it away just me touching the broken leaves I personally broke out into blistering wounds all over my hands and arms for over 2 months. Its It's insane! I got the plant because it was pretty. I honestly had no clue when I got it what harm it could cause. (To be fair especially with pets keep plants up and outta the way! I keep mine up high and gated off yet she found her way in when unsupervised)
Something I've found is that certain varieties of plants can cause more severe reactions. I keep a lot of syngoniums and the syngonium ive had in my house never caused any reactions if my cats got into them but my albo gave my cat a reaction that you could tell irritated his mouth because he was drooling after just biting the leaf (he didn't ingest any) so I've been very careful to keep my cats out of my syngonium since
I never have any Dieffenbachia because I was poisoned by it as a young child. Even handling the leaves can be toxic. The symptoms in a child, tongue swelling and airways closing, plus burned vocal cords. I always give those particular plants the side eye. Great video!
I am lucky that my cat doesn't show interest in most of my plants, she has a weakness for grass looking thin leaves. So i don't buy any plants with thin leaves and to be extra sure i always have kitty grass in the house. I buy the seeds , they grow in about 1 to 2 weeks and last about a month. This way she can nibble on her plant and leave the others in peace.
Aloha, ty for this video.Did I miss something or did you not show a photo of some of the plants you spoke about? Being dyslexic causes me to be very visual so that my brain can grasp things easier.BTW, your skin is beautiful. You should do a skin care video 🦮🦜🐈.
Loved this video! It's super helpful Thankfully my dog never tried to eat any of my plants, but the toxic ones still are out of his reach just in case ❤️
My dog has never been interested in my plants but the combination of living close to the polar circle (not very friendly to tropical plants) and having anxiety about my dog one day deciding he's bored and trying to taste the plants, I'm getting an ikea greenhouse. That way I can lock them up but still enjoy and have them.
They shouldn't have a sago palm inside or even in their yards. It's a popular landscaping plant in Houston and many people have had their dogs die from eating some of the plant. I believe the pods or pups are especially deadly.
Thanks for the video. I think what woild make these more useful in the future is to have photos of the plants youre refering to. This can help make the content more engaging and insightful.
I diffuse eucalyptus every once in a while and I had no idea! It’s being retired now😂 thank you so much for sharing! Also I am the same way about wherever I am, the pups are right there with me. It makes all of us feel better in my house🥰
Hahaha too funny “I don’t lock my toddler in a room and leave” I don’t have any pets yet, but I watch my toddler like a hawk when he is around my plants. I have a fence around all of them, but he can still reach over the fence and touch some of them. I basically just consider all of them as toxic and make sure he doesn’t get into any of them.
My dog dug into my birds of paradise... he didn't eat the leaves but ate the dirt and some of the roots. He had a but diarrhea but thankfully was fine.
I guess I’m moving my flowing domino peace lily ASAP! I didn’t know the pollen was also toxic. Fortunately my cat loves being in and around plants but never bits them.
Peace lily are not true lilies and have a much more mild toxic effect than actual lilies. They’re not considered pet-safe, but they’re not acutely toxic. I keep mine up high stIll, but I keep any real lilies (mostly in bouquets) WAY up high and safe.
Was looking after relatives dogs, came down in the night to a bang and one dog was on the floor having a seizure. We have a snake plant. Had no idea it was toxic, we think she ate the soil/roots because the plant was intact
I have cats, dogs and a bunny who we found abandoned outside. I was good about keeping toxic plants away from our dogs and cats before but I was completely caught off guard when my bunny jumped on a stool and then onto a counter to eat my Peace Lily. When I caught him I went into panick mode calling vets, poison control etc. He ended up being fine but it taught me a lot. And he has no access to any houseplants now. 🐇

Not everyone is born with beautiful teeth. For instance a lot of babies born in 1960 were given vitamins that ruined the enamel on their permanent teeth which caused the teeth to look yellow. My cat was chewing on my dracaena tree and think God she didn't get to much. I mixed up a bunch of spices into a spray bottle of water and she hasn't touched it since. Not saying it will work for other people but she didn't want anything to do with it after. Some of the spices I used was cumin. cinnamon, etc a lot of the really spicy stuff and it smelled like rotten eggs. So if you use this concoction it will smell for a day or two.
