I was in Batam back in 2016 for conducting ahotel training project and I bumped into my former colleague who i worked together before. She brought me around the Island it was super nice place and people. Good food as well
expect higher prices than normal at ferry/airport terminals. Taxi mafia controls these high traffic places, walk out alittle more outside. But if they catch the grab driver, they might beat up the driver or trash the vehicle. Do be careful if the locals start asking too many specific questions or offer to help with services, may be a nice gesture but need to be wary.
Nice! I have been watching your channel since 2020. I went to Batam in Nov 2022 and I recommend you to visit Grand Batam Mall and Nagoya Hill Mall. Regards, Daniel from Singapore.
ohhh wow Ken Batam is a beautifull place , i been there 2017 for 5month im very enjoy there with my good friends indonesian people and they are same here in Philippines a nice person too
normally 32GB is for high speed internet. once you finished it, your internet speed will be throttled down to few kbps only. enough for texting, not for surfing. that's why she said it was unlimited.

I’m literally a loyal customer of Grab too but only in Singapore😁 Currently 🇸🇬 still don’t have motorbike as taxi service now😂 It’s 👍🏼 for man to travel alone but definitely not too safe for any female travellers😅 but I still think man who travel to any unfamiliar country still have to look out esp. when some local might try to scam / cheat you for money. I still remember words from a tour guide telling us not to give donation to street beggars or performers because you give 1, the next comes and so on. Just stay safe & be careful. Enjoy your trip as I really enjoyed watching all your travelling vids😁
I am not sure but in many countries, unlimited could mean that you get xGb @ full speed and then after you exceed the xGb (in this case 32Gb), it will throttle to like 128kbps or something. Not only in Indonesia but some countries are like that. So it is unlimited 🙂. With 128kbps, you can still WA,etc. Just a tip, it is always easier to get a phone with e-sim support and just buy one when u head to any country. Esims are very cheap and can be purchased online.
One more. In indonesia, foreign phones can't use Indonesia SIM card because had to register imei first right? Lol I had to paid to beacukai 3 million rp. But I won't. I just use local services to hack imei. Back then I just can use Indonesian SIM card right away. But now, it's system is b4d. Like it wants money so much. I hope it change its system. Like If you go to other countries, you don't need to hack or buy new phone, straight away can use other countries SIM card. I know it's happening because many phones import from outside to Indonesia or clone phones too right? But the government should be more clever. Like easier tourist to travel. Hope Indonesian government in future will look more at this. Not always taxing at people lol.
@KataKuri-tc5ch Ya. That's my prob right now. I live in Indonesia but my phone is from abroad. I registered one time already. After about 4 weeks it was working. After travelling again, coming back same problem. Thinking about buy a phone here in Indo. But maybe same happen again after travelling? I don't know. BTW tourist stay not longer in Indonesia than a month (?) have no problem. 41:50

I think what she meant unlimited data plan is because you can still use it after 32gb but the speed will drop/slower because of fair usage, not exactly unlimited. Indonesian language is basically modified malay language, combined with other native language, Indonesian can understand 70 to 80% malay language. Have a nice stay in Indonesia 🙂

Ride hailing (Grab, Gojek, Uber, etc.) isn't illegal in Indonesia, but it's not something which traditional taxi drivers are very fond of - mainly due to such apps "fishing" away the potential customers from them. Which kind of explains why you had the conversation at the taxi counter. I feel that it's best you steer clear of the whole "but XYZ is cheaper than your taxi" argument (especially when speaking to taxi drivers and/or their associates), so as not to cause any unwanted misunderstandings or trouble (things can - and will - get pretty ugly real fast!). But please don't let that deter you from exploring the country, as its people are warm, accommodating, and friendly! It also has rich history and culture, and really great food as well! Hope you have an enjoyable time in Batam and the rest of Indonesia!
Few months ago, a singaporean got beaten up near nagoya mall for unknown reasons. Most of the people making an honest living are nice. Just ignore taxi drivers and use grab outside of their "territories"

The driver attitude in Batam sea port is not very nice. They are rude and tried to extract money from passengers, like a thug. When I took the cab, the driver refused helping me to lift bags. Just stay away from taxi drivers in the Batam sea port.

Grab is legal in Batam island but they are not allowed to pick up passengers right in front of the ferry terminal due to the business competition with the taxi
Malay language is similar with bahasa Indonesia but not same. You may find it's different once you're in java. There are many malays in batam, riau, Sumatra & Kalimantan.

What i experience on grab/gojek in jakarta. Basically if entering the hotel to pick up or drop off. The gantry charges the driver for parking even if its just picking up or dropping off. There isnt any grace period. And the driver will charge the fee to the passenger.
The Indonesian people are very friendly. Nice to see. Why would they tell you at the taxi stand that Grab is illegal? They went the wrong way to make themselves extra money from you. Ken if you wish to travel around Indonesia especially in Batam tried avoiding those non meter taxi at counter they will usually charge higher price then normal I would recommend you taking Grab as far as possible but if there isn’t any grab you could use Bluebird taxi or any of Bluebird subsidiary as they are well trusted and their meter are not rigged but if you do see if there are rigged you can report it immediately to the customer service department
A question please. You travel to so many countries with so many currencies. Do you compare pricing with your German currency? I realise you compare for your viewers with US dollars. The SIM company you used is the most recommended. It's hard for the taxis and Grab at airports always a fuss because of the competition.
In my head I concert to euro, but on the screen I show USD as that's the most commonly known currency around the world, as I get views from many different countries
it's not that grab is illegal, but the taxi company is being destroyed by grab since they are cheaper. a few years back, there is a riot between the taxi company employees and grab employees, so they regulated it banning grab in some areas, but when you go out of the area then you can get grab or gocar
I Just subscribed your channel , it's quite interesting journey i visited Batam 8 years ago and it has developed since then , I am curious how you will get to Jakarta without taking an airplane, from Jakarta , then you can go to Bandung City taking High Speed Train called Whoosh.
Just for ypur info grab is legal but its illegal to book grab from the terminal u have to walk out to the opposite shopping mall to booked the grab mate..
Ken in Batam you can still take Grab there. But discreetly they will fetch you a distance away from the taxi stand/taxi pick-up area because the taxi drivers see Grab as stealing their business.

But if they catch the grab driver, they might beat up the driver or trash the vehicle. Do be careful if the locals start asking too many specific questions or offer to help with services, may be a nice gesture but need to be wary.
Very true!
Nice! I have been watching your channel since 2020. I went to Batam in Nov 2022 and I recommend you to visit Grand Batam Mall and Nagoya Hill Mall.
Regards,
Daniel from Singapore.
Thanks for watching since then 🙏
I never travelled out of India. But love to watch your videos. Do come to India. If I am optimistic hope to see you
I'll plan to visit India in the future ✌️
Wow amazing long vid Ken! Keep up the good work👌🏻
Thanks Ruben ✌️
Safe travels Ken. I have not been there yet but it is on my list. Looking forward to following your jurney. Stay safe. and eat loads of new foods. :)
Hii ken welcome to Indonesia. Enjoy to Explore archipelago of Indonesia. Safe trip my bro and see u in Java island
ohhh wow Ken Batam is a beautifull place , i been there 2017 for 5month im very enjoy there with my good friends indonesian people and they are same here in Philippines a nice person too
normally 32GB is for high speed internet. once you finished it, your internet speed will be throttled down to few kbps only. enough for texting, not for surfing. that's why she said it was unlimited.
You can visit Pulau Belakang Padang...a small charming island in Batam which can see Singapore skyscrapers from this island.
I think that's a good spot only for locals.....not for someone who has been in Singapore

It's called fup. Fun fact in Malaysia and Singapore, I get unlimited but dont get slow. Because don't have limit fup
@@Sii_123i dont know about that i had no issue using my foreign phones with an indonesian sim card
32gb has the maximum speed when it's finished you still have unlimited data but the speed lowered

I think what she meant unlimited data plan is because you can still use it after 32gb but the speed will drop/slower because of fair usage, not exactly unlimited.

True. In fact, Malaysia' s first Agung's descendants r fr Palembang, a place called Pagar Ruyung.
You can take ferry from Batam to either Dumai or Palembang. From there travel to lumpung and there is ferry to Jakarta
Cheers!

Why you're not ask him ?
Teritory ?
Is legal taxi
Their company has sign agreement as partner.
Grab or gojek company doesn't have agreement.
The driver attitude in Batam sea port is not very nice. They are rude and tried to extract money from passengers, like a thug. When I took the cab, the driver refused helping me to lift bags. Just stay away from taxi drivers in the Batam sea port.

Agreement or not, monopolizing the first stop point at a point of entry is a sure way to destroy the tourism sector of any city.
Used to frequent Batam often. No more these days. Nonsensical ticket prices (2x the price for stulang - batam for half the distance). I am just one of many.
Is the agreement a contract that can be enforced in a court of law? Funny how there's so many reports of violence on the internet? [2]
Is your definition of agreement backed by law? Or is it backed by fists?

Batam harbour under private company management
If gojek grab Uber company has sign a agreement with Batam harbour managemen, it wouldn't be an issue.
Just lease pick up /drop area
Like in other place such as airport or railway stations
Simple.
ayyooo imma sub u since u visit my cityy, tbh they sell the simcard to tourist is ofc quite pricey...you can get a cheaper one outside the terminal but its kinda far to get. anywayyy im glad u enjoyed roaming around batam !
Indonesia is very large, consisting of many islands, 1 month is not enough to explore, at least it takes 3 or 4 months to be able to enjoy the friendliness of its people and its natural beauty..
Grab is legal in Batam island but they are not allowed to pick up passengers right in front of the ferry terminal due to the business competition with the taxi
You may try travel through Sumatra or catch a ferry to Pontianak then to Jakarta. Each ferry takes less than 3 or 4 days journey
Malay language is similar with bahasa Indonesia but not same. You may find it's different once you're in java. There are many malays in batam, riau, Sumatra & Kalimantan.

After Indonesia got its independance, they need a unifying language hence bahasa melayu was used but they rebrand it as bahasa Indonesia

What i experience on grab/gojek in jakarta. Basically if entering the hotel to pick up or drop off. The gantry charges the driver for parking even if its just picking up or dropping off. There isnt any grace period. And the driver will charge the fee to the passenger.
Do you wanna the driver wouldn't charge the fee to you ?

The Indonesian people are very friendly. Nice to see. Why would they tell you at the taxi stand that Grab is illegal? They went the wrong way to make themselves extra money from you. They see a foreign person and try to take advantage of you, you are too wise from so much travel , so standing up to them was great. Enjoy your stay.
It cause taxi company has partner agreement
Grab has not
@andriasjabsYeah its less of a relevance unlike on Java, so the policing of such activities is not as strict

Hello,
Great video...Great tips !
Which area do you recommend to stay in Batam near convenience stores, street food markets and transportation system ?
Thank you so much.
In Batam grab is ilegal to anyway pickup but some places hv allowed to pick up
They use main Gojek there Ken and the funny thing is they can aloght passengers at any ferry terminal or at the airport but they cant ' pixk up' at these places due to some strange ruling. U can always negotiate the price with those taxi drivers
Even for some shopping there the same can be said for Gojek/ grab.
It cause taxi company has partner agreement.
Grab gojek has not
@@yangerek78generally just avoid taxis, they already have a habit of trying to rip foreigners off, grab, gojek etc offer fair, clear and consistant pricing

Indonesia is comparatively more cheaper than Singapore and Malaysia. People are also friendly.👍
IDK about price though. Some cheap and some not. Because I had traveled a lot. If you compare to big city, maybe. But goods prices? It's different.
Depends, malaysia cheaper in terms of electronics, food is about the same but transportation is cheaper in indonesia
Not all electronics are expensive in Indonesia.
As we have our own internationally known local brands and many international brands manufacturers here.

Batam port is not allow grab or any other online taxi to take passenger from port. The price he mention is correct price if you take a counter taxi
If youre trying to go to jakarta via sea can consider taking boat from tanjung pinang to jakarta
Indonesia luas, masing2 setiap daerah punya ciri khas masing2
The last but not the least ...are there nice beaches/islands near Batam ?
A question please. You travel to so many countries with so many currencies. Do you compare pricing with your German currency? I realise you compare for your viewers with US dollars.
The SIM company you used is the most recommended.
It's hard for the taxis and Grab at airports always a fuss because of the competition.
In my head I concert to euro, but on the screen I show USD as that's the most commonly known currency around the world, as I get views from many different countries

welcome back to Indonesia. BTW, 32 GB unlimited is unlimited but the speed is slowed down after you finished the 32 GB.
it's not that grab is illegal, but the taxi company is being destroyed by grab since they are cheaper. a few years back, there is a riot between the taxi company employees and grab employees, so they regulated it banning grab in some areas, but when you go out of the area then you can get grab or gocar
