I studied with Ted for a year and a half back in 1971. He was the only one who could teach playing the guitar like playing the piano - his sister taught piano. He was the most supportive generous man I ever met.

This is the high water mark in the history of solo unaccompanied jazz guitar.. I've watched this clip at least 500 times and still cannot get over it. There's more music in his one minute improvised intro here than there is on most entire jazz guitar recordings.. Greatest genius in American guitar history.

Ted is one of those top 1% of players where, as a musician, I don't really want to dissect his playing. I just have to let it be and enjoy it because it was his art. I leave it alone and just enjoy it.

+Rob Basile Ya, I've felt the same way about Wayne Krantz's compositions (from the 90's) for years. I have to say though, I finally broke down and started transcribing his material, and once I did I have never been the same. It's wonderful. Same with Ted =)

    • @michael1
      @michael1 2 місяці тому

@@eelamite What? Pretty much the bulk of his musical output that still exists, exists in a context of him giving lessons either to an individual or a group. This being one such example. He only released one album. The interesting thing about his playing is more the choice of notes than the technical difficulty. Sure, there is a fair amount of difficult stretches because of him picking unusual chord voicings to facilitate playing either the melody or counterpoint but there are plenty of guitar players whose pieces are far more difficult to play from a technical pov. Certainly the crowd of buffoons that appears any time the next fast playing guitarist appears would do well to try and play some of Ted's slower tempoed but nevertheless challenging music. As for analysis ruining it - he's literally talking about what he's doing as he plays his Bach counterpoint and in many of his other videos. The idea analysis would ruin it is laughable.
If anything the reason he has some pretty sounding stuff to listen to is simply because, unlike a lot of Jazz chordal playing he picks a number of songs from either traditional or popular music, e.g a songs from musicals, Christmas Carols and he's rarely looking for the most "outside" harmony to put underneath as many Jazz guitarists tend to. As a result - and because he has taste in large quantities, his playing sounds very pretty.
In his notes that he scribbles on the chord diagrams what we might do to use this to our playing - i.e things like just playing the bass part so you hear that voice rather than see it as a bunch of bass notes. That's pretty significant in his actual Bach counterpoint improvising too where he verbalises where his focus is on as he's playing. Sometimes the bass melody being the focus and then switching to the higher voices. Well he's doing more or less the same thing for the Christmas Carol or whatever he's playing too. It's counterpoint. Playing the melody and the harmony isn't just chords that fit, it's adding additional voices. To not study his playing would be to make him more or less irrelevant because that's the biggest thing he gave to the world of music really - 2 great books and a lot of educational videos with thankfully modern technology has distributed to everyone (sadly, I always think, that he lived in the time of home recordings made on a potato because we can imagine how much greater his body of work might have been had his students had access to the higher definition cameras we take for granted now)

Same here, Ronald. I can hardly listen to this without tearing up. I studied with Ted between 1987-1989 at his apartment in Encino. -- What really blows me away is his use of the harp harmonics. WITH 4 FINGERS !!! He's using his index and middle finger together, then (SOME HOW !?!?!) his ring and pinky finger together... wow... -- This is by far my most favorite live recording of Ted. Such emotion and beauty. It really reflects the beautiful humble man that Ted was. I surely miss him, both instructor and friend.

I think that the overtones come from Ted Left hand which he would squeeze the fret board, the right hand waving seems to be more of a rythmn thing that Ted would use for himself. You might want to visit the Ted Green web site and there is a forum for questions like this...personally, I still trip out on Ted's mastery of the fret board and his musicality. The fact this video has dislikes proves people will respond negatively to anything. Ted Greene was a gift and we are lucky moments like these were recorded and shared.

Bill The fact that 8 people clicked on dislike is a reality of life. There are many colours in a rainbow and you can never please all of the people all of the time....frankly who cares? maybe some of the 8 people might have mis-clicked, some might genuinely loathe this type of music, frankly...it does not upset me. I recently wrote an article about snobbery and taste....when I was a kid I was a snob that was into Coltrane and Miles...I looked down upon people that dug the BeeGees...lollll what an loser...that was my loss..that music was of its' time and today I think it's great! a tune like Send in the clowns was of its' day...a pop tune...just like the BeeGees...nothing counts in art....except the feeling you get when you listen...I'm listening to this as I type and it gets to my heart...even tears well up...but that's me. The way that you felt when you listened and the way it touched you...is what counts....remember it is you...no one else that decides what You dig! RC

We would all play it slightly differently. That's what makes "every" musician unique.

@eightstring amen to that brother, this goes so much deeper than just 'guitar playing' though, this is just a musician, expressing his soul, compulsory viewing for every musician. ted is the perfect example of a musician who plays his instrument, these days too many guitar players let the guitar play them!

Chord Chemistry was my bible when I was learning to play the guitar and I think I probably learned more from one page of that book than the entire contents of every other guitar book I ever owned. And in all that time I'd never heard him play, until I did a search for him on UA-cam. Completely stunned.

What did he die of? I had all of his jazz chord books. Boy he had long fingers... Some of those inversions....
    Wonderful music.

Ted Greene was never really here ,
he was just visiting from some whole other place 🌠
We are not worthy to have him in books and video 🙇

I totally understand the technique - it's the effortless/amazing application of it that I wonder about :).
