I'd love to see the assassination/VIP escort game mode re-imagined. It feels like a perfect time with CS2 being a bit empty without the war games modes.
Maybe instead of a set VIP character it’s like a briefcase they have to carry, once picked up you are locked into carrying it but if you die it gets dropped and can be picked up by both sides, if the “bad guys” get the briefcase or stall the time then they win
CTs picking up hostage at the start seems like the balance change this gamemode needs, maybe add 2 rescue zones and the camping playstyle becomes sub optimal. Its like defuse without retaking and roles switched.
@@t0ksi945 but then it's not a vip mode... it's hostage mode? I'm not against hostie mode, I am an office Stan who is begging valve to bring back agency. And I'm not saying that oil rig wouldn't make a good hostage map with some modifications. But it feels like the creativity that made CS fun is dying out and everything has to be crammed into one of 2 boxes: 'competitively viable 5v5 demolition' or 'silly hostage mode not viable lmao'.
@@ignitron2710I have been wondering this as well. One thing I really love about Havana when playing Source back then was that the rescue zone spreaded out evenly. You can flank at any route and bring the hostage to at that route's zone.
@@cloudynguyen6527 similar to both Insertion maps based on memory they both have pretty wide rescue zones that could be approached from different paths, to balance the fact it was also campable
Its me, I'm the one that remembers oilrig fondly from the early days of 1.6! I saw this and just had to watch, very good video tysm! One minor point would be that in the early days of CS "5v5 competitive" wasn't really a thing per se. It all played more like a community casual experience. There was no official matchmaking as most people know, but in those days the number of people playing in a given match was only limited by server settings and resources. Like de_dust2 and most early maps tbh, its just not optimized for such small teams. From what I remember its best played with at least 16 players (8v8) with the cts getting the odd player if the teams cant be evenly split.
^this The map and random T spawn points make a lot more sense when its like 12v12. There was a race to chokepoints and it forced action on all levels of the map. Instead of camping exits, it was sometimes advantageous to solo rush T spawn at the start of the round
I haven't played counter-strike in a couple years at this point, but still follow it because of valve and cool creators like 3kliksphillip, and this video felt interesting enough to warrant watching and I enjoyed it. Somewhere through it though I felt like there was an oilrig-type map I remember playing a long time ago that I really enjoyed on a community server I think. That's when you showed df_scorpio and I remembered all of those fun defenestration maps from that time. It's crazy to think the guy who made that map made the video I was just watching. great editing! thank you for the memories of de_scorpio!
i remember like at 10 or so playing this map just empty no bots no players just walking around exploring everything 1.6 was amazing my favorite map was the one with helicopters and cars
as_tundra was an official map for a long time, nearly as long as oilrig. I always enjoyed it in pubs, worth checking out if you're interested in the as_ play mode. For a real trip check out the old es_ maps. Those are a blast from the past. And it was kind of a shit mode lol but anyway it was kind of interesting. The entities that powered that game mode formed the basis for the og scoutzknivez to function.
One of the countless f2p modern military shooter clones that came out after the success of MW1 also had a similar game mode - also called assassination. The core difference was that the VIP was an NPC that started stationary but would try to evacuate once Ts passed one of multiple checkpoints (in order to get close they would have to cross at least one of them). One core difference is that after killing the VIP Ts would still need to get back to their spawn and then survive for a short amount of time to win the round. Overall I'd say it's less unbalanced than VIP mode, since it is still 5v5 and you have a decent variety of strats, also pretty dependent on which of the three maps (Lockdown, Eagle's Nest & Dropzone) you played on. (Dropzone was very T-sided and one of the other two was rather CT-sided, with the third being kinda balanced, though it was very easy for Ts to kill the VIP it was rather hard to extract. At least IIRC, which may or may not be the case, considering I haven't played that in probably over a decade.) To list the win conditions: *CT* - Timer runs out without the Ts breaching the perimeter - VIP escapes - Timer runs out without the Ts being able to make it back to T spawn after killing the VIP - All Ts are dead *T* - Extracting after killing the VIP - All CTs are dead
I think it might be a good idea for the gamemode to have one random CT with maybe a little bit more hp (like in Danger Zine with 125 hp) is chosen as the VIP, but he can buy all the equipment like the rest and the T's do not know who is the VIP. That might make the mode more balanced.
I js wanna say, yk hAdji? He followed me on twitter, and then I msged him all hyped being like "YOO HADJI FOLLOWED ME???" and then he replied saying "Bro sorry missclick and then unfollowed me 😭. But at least we had a convo, where he said his fav current players are ropz and twistzz, so yeah. Idk why i told u this but i decided to repay the favour since you always give me useless information like whether theres more doors or wheels in cs2.
SWAT4 had a much better VIP mode, where as a suspect (terrorist) you must arrest the VIP, hold him for 2 minutes and then execute SWAT team can meanwhile free him and continue his rescue
single hostage in CT spawn makes for a great substitute to the classic VIP mode, and i think it would work really well in CS2. but it needs new maps. having the T's spawn randomly everywhere is just bonkers.
I think it would be really cool if they made a VIP like mode in more modern games, not a direct VIP mode because it has many flaws that will always make one side to powerful. But something more unique like perhaps one team has to get a briefcase from one side to another, and the enemy team has to steal and destroy the briefcase
Also the person with the briefcase could be restricted to pistols, would have a gameplay reason for being restricted to a weaker weapon because your other hand is occupied.
I think that switching the roles of T and CT side and letting the VIP buy any pistol might be a good way to balance the gamemode. Still not finished the video but judging from the concept that seems like a good way to balance it considering T/CT economy is balanced around Attack/Defend roles. If Valve happen to read this and are considering remaking this gamemode, lore wise just have the VIP be like a mob boss or leader of some terrorist faction of some kind w/ custom VIP agents for profit. Ez 1 million+ boom.
4:44 Fun Fact: One of the original creators of Counter Strike, Mihn Lee, wanted CS to be a very tactical game, but due to CS being a Half Life mod and the CS community's fear of change, CS turned into what it is today.
Assassination was always unpopular due to weapon restrictions and the lack of map design and balance. What can be done there is to start off with a good map layout in mind and that could possibly work and ofc let the VIP at least have a better gun other than the starting pistol.
and instead of having more armor I think it would be better for him to have more health points (in other games with VIP modes usually the VIP had more health points than the rest of the players), at least so he doesn't die in 1 HS
Throwback to my childhood LANs with this video. It would be fun to try this.

they tried it in tf2, didnt work well

Actually why doesn't current hostage mode have 2 rescue zones isntead of one?

Don't lie, you didn't make the map, T1Mure did
Just update this map visually, tweak it a bit and make a casual playlist for it. 10v10 seems perfect for this mode/map size imo
Can you pls play de_salt or de_remains? Or port it i realy want to play it the nostalgi is crazy....
Can you post the link for the discord group please? It’s expired :/
Im so confused, I always set it to never expire and it always somehow expires. Here you go:
