The funny thing about them is that while not lying to each other is awfully convenient, it is also extremely realistic for a race of beings who lie deliberately rather than impulsively. After all, who is more likely to catch them in a lie than someone who both knows that they are liars and is their rival in such regards. Lie to everyone else because they are stupid and deserve it but never lie to ones own kind because they are wise enough to eventually catch you lying and prove it.
That's an interesting way of thinking about it. It implies that if there is, by some miracle, someone who has gained their trust then that person might actually not be lied to, at least not all the time.
@@TheFoxfiend Given what they are, about the only way to do that would be if someone was extremely hard to successfully lie to or otherwise someone who they see to be as successful and talented a liar as themselves. Even then trust would be a bit too far removed from their deceitful nature so it would be something more like respect for a rival than anything else.

this series has given me an idea for a BBEG: a curator of all beings, and while not necessarily evil, they would be willing to fight tooth and nail to collect everything there is to see and know about creatures. thanks for the inspiration!
I just discovered this channel a couple days ago and have watched a few videos looking for a new antagonist for my pcs. Pretty sure this is what I was looking for without knowing it. Thanks for the content!

Now that you reminded me that Khayal's existed (it's been awhile since I've been deep into 3e) I kind of want to homebrew a Kayal version of the genielock. Though the shuffle of damage types in 5e has me wondering how to go about it.
Funnily enough I created something similar recently. We have a Warlock of the Genie, and her patron was captured by Auril and his guardian was a being made of shadow very similar to the Khayal here. Was a tonne of fun to fight! He summoned a maze to trap the party, and then used his incorporeal form to pass through the walls to strike at isolated party members. The one major change was that he was immune to attacks of opportunity so mobility was its true strength. Might need to have more similar beings appear later in the campaign and introduce the Khayal proper. Thank you!
If you want inspiration for the city's architecture besides M.C. Escher, consider looking at the game _NaissancE,_ or watching a walkthrough of it. My advice is to go into _NaissancE_ blind, don't let other people spoil your experience of it with their personal interpretations. It's not a difficult game unless you are navigationally-challenged. Also IIRC there are rules for quasi-elemental genasi associated with the (negative)×(elemental) planes in 2E _Planescape_ that might be relevant to your interests.
One shot Plot hook: the party awakens to find they've all been turned into shadow genasi and have to make their way through the genie's Dungeon to get back to the light.
I kinda love the idea of a Khayal that is a traveling merchant that sells dubious, useless or cursed items at low prices. Perhaps they also run a black market. I also like the idea of one Showing up as an Attorney for someone, who manages to lie and or cheat to win the case. What if its a warlock contract vs some devil, or even asmodeus, and theres a few sessions of the most corrupt version of Pheonix Wright Ace Attorney.
I love these genie videos. I made a campaign where the primary gods are Genies and Elementals, so having more genies I couldn't use in 5e is an amazing benefit.
Found your channel the other day and I’ve been binging through it all! The edits are always top notch and you always present the information so enthusiastically! You’re doing great work and I appreciate you :)
Alright, I have a few monsters to recommend for monster of the week! First, consider the jahi, a type of incorporeal undead serpent from 3.0 monster manual 2, that drains victims of their charisma, but then wraps itself around the victim, allowing the target to borrow the jahi’s charisma. Essentially, it uses its victims as figureheads to create cults for its own nefarious purposes, keeping its mount in line by the continuous threat of abandoning it to its fate. Could be neat. Second, if you are up for getting into the really dark, how about the “hex dragon” from dragon magazine iss. 343? Though physically weaker than other dragons of its age, the hex dragon is a stronger magical opponent, its scales crawling with arcane sigils. A connoisseur of all things vile, with a poisonous breath, the hex dragon can strike those who wound it with a retributive curse, and it’s death throes unleash this same power on all present. Lastly, for a big challenge, how about the clockwork horrors? Mechanical invaders who will devour the planet at the whims of their leader. This one is large undertaking, as there are multiple types of clockwork horror, split primarily between the 3.0 monster manual 2, and dragon magazine iss. 350. For inspiration, I recommend the justice league animated series episode “dark heart.”
@@DungeonDad I found your channel very recently, through the false hydra episode, and looking through more of the playlist has enticed me to stay. I’ve been into dnd for a long time, but haven’t played beat as much as I’d like. I just want to say, thank you for all the work you put into those series. My first edition was 3.5, and seeing the awesome monsters get recognition, bringing them to 5e, makes me happy.

And your editing is some of the best i’ve ever seen on YT and ive spend dozens of thousands hours here. And ofc i love dnd, am dm. You deserve all the credit you get!!! 💯
Would love if some kind of corrupt chancellor or bishop caught admiration of a Khalay and they have begun to work together for their shared interests and the party has to catch both of them in their lies
I’ve thought about something similar see in my homebrew setting there are eight prime elements added to the classical fire, water, earth, air is darkness, light, ice and lighting I’ll be using these for darkness. It’s nice to think about monster equivalent of different environments
My DM actually put one of these in his game named Nerevan or something (I don't quite remember since only his nickname stuck), and we ended up calling him Kyle. We ended up giving him butterscotch candies and coffee, since he lives in the desert we set up shop in. Make nice with the neighbors and all that lol
A few of the invocations so far are to give a warlock low levels of sneak attack dice, expertise on one skill and maybe one based around evasion or uncanny dodge.
I had a dm that allowed paraelemental Djinn and genasi since the paraelemental storm exsists I plaid a storm genasi raised by a storm giant who sent him off to find his place in the ordening because while he was physically small he was fiercely intelligent and incredibly powerful enough to make up for his physical frailty (by giant standards)
This would be an awesome edition to the warlock genie pact. It be like having jafar As your genie. Constantly trying to tempt you to do Greater things at the cost Of committing evil acts to Accomplish them successfully.
I honestly have never played dnd and know norhing about it. But these videos are so fckn interesting. I really wanna convince my friends to try it with me. Thanks for the awesome videos.
Hey! I would love to see a video about the Colour out of space from pathfinder. I think it’s a really cool creature for a lovecraftian campaign! Anyway, good job, love your channel.
Someone suggested the ghul genie in the comments below and I noticed there are no lore videos about them as of Feb 2023 so I'd love to see you cover them first
This is probably my favorite Monster of the Week episode but it makes me wonder if there wouldn’t be a genie of the feywild. The Shadowfell and The Feywild are located in similar places on the planar map so would it not stand to reason that souls could go there as well?
Aside from the Qorrashi we don’t have any others. I will definitely do a video about them in the future, but I would also be cool to see some genies from the planes of Mud, Smoke, and Magma
Awesome video! Gave me great inspiration for a small event in my own campaign. If you ever get around to it. The Drakainia from Pathfinder Monster Manual 4 page 76 practically writes its own adventure. However, I am curious what your take on it would be.
Now I'm curious what a feywild genie would be like, unless of course the only genie that goes there is the jann, would help to further explain the irritation the khayal have with the jann if they have domains both in the deserts of the prime and the fey. Still would like for their to be fae genies, if for no other reason than completion sake.
Plot hook: Party is hired to find evidence of a lie committed by an unknown third party. Turns out this lie was performed by a Khayal, and the person hiring them wants to catch them in the lie to gain a wish. While an inquisitive party might learn of this, and steal the wish for themselves, should the party give the evidence away, they'll have to deal with the consequences of a wish granted by a Khayal, as I believe this kind of genie would be most inclined to grant a double edged wish. i.e. A wish for wealth may just transfer a dragons hoard to your location, while leaving the dealing with the dragon to the adventurers.

If by any chance you decide to do so please do a conversion that highlights its psionic abilities. Cheers!
Can I recommend the Ripper from 3.5's Cityscape book? It's one of the few creatures that actually used nonlethal damage with pretty much every attack and I'd love to see how you translate that into 5e.

Also IIRC there are rules for quasi-elemental genasi associated with the (negative)×(elemental) planes in 2E _Planescape_ that might be relevant to your interests.
Just found this channel today and I love the content! Keep it up!
Welcome to the channel my friend!
7:31 Sarevok making a cameo!
Killer video and fascinating monster
I just want to use this as a patron for Genielocks and Hexblades.
This one has sparked a ideal creature to add to an adventure in the planning stages.
Another great video. Love the addition of the class and race options
I'm using this creature as the mastermind behind the corruption of a janni that leads a group of genasi desert nomads.
Great video!
My only question is, what if there were a psychic elemental genie
I want to somehow incorporate all the rarer genasi subraces into my hex crawl setting
Found your channel the other day and I’ve been binging through it all! The edits are always top notch and you always present the information so enthusiastically! You’re doing great work and I appreciate you :)
Thanks so much for watching! I appreciate YOU!
This would be an awesome choice for a warlock's patron. I can see it either being hexblade, genie, or a combination of the 2.
That s one of the reasons I like the difference made between Elemental, Paraelemental and Quasielemental planes.
Everytime you post a new video I find inspiration to write a new campaign 🤣. Thanks for the great info
You are so welcome!
you should TOTALLY do a "worm that walks" video
I used the shadowfell as a apart of one of my first dnd sessions man i missed out on these dudes
Awesome, I will add them to the list!
I am so glad to see you gaining so many followers each day at the moment. Because you deserve it so hard.
Your content is amazing, your explanations of lore of the creatures are amazing. And your editing is some of the best i’ve ever seen on YT and ive spend dozens of thousands hours here.
And ofc i love dnd, am dm.
You deserve all the credit you get!!! 💯
Thank you so much!

I believe you mean on a 1 it's going to come away with a 20, and a 30 average.
Would love if some kind of corrupt chancellor or bishop caught admiration of a Khalay and they have begun to work together for their shared interests and the party has to catch both of them in their lies
thx! i needed one, since one of my partymembers picked up a ring of genie, and rolled a khayal, on the 1d8 genie rolls!
The photoshop joke was 10/10, I love it so much

"I 100% included that line just to do this Photoshop joke and I have no regrets about the whole situation."
*Worth* 👍
Khayal are super cool plus it really makes the shadow genasi work in my world. 😊
I’ve thought about something similar see in my homebrew setting there are eight prime elements added to the classical fire, water, earth, air is darkness, light, ice and lighting I’ll be using these for darkness. It’s nice to think about monster equivalent of different environments
Courtroom interactions underrated! Great video
My DM actually put one of these in his game named Nerevan or something (I don't quite remember since only his nickname stuck), and we ended up calling him Kyle.
We ended up giving him butterscotch candies and coffee, since he lives in the desert we set up shop in. Make nice with the neighbors and all that lol
where using one as my patron in my current campaign in the underdark, i'm playing a changeling shadow sorcerer and genie warlock and it's so fun.
Ive been working on a warlock genie pact option for this creature along with some rogue inspired innvocations.
A few of the invocations so far are to give a warlock low levels of sneak attack dice, expertise on one skill and maybe one based around evasion or uncanny dodge.
Khayal genie kind for Genie Warlock:
Spells: Bane, Blindness/Deafness, Bestow Curse, Black Tentacles, Mislead. Has Necrotic as its damage type.
Thank you for this and the work you do!
Thank you for all your hard work!!!
You should! Glad you're enjoying the vids!
Hey! I would love to see a video about the Colour out of space from pathfinder. I think it’s a really cool creature for a lovecraftian campaign! Anyway, good job, love your channel.
Thanks for watching! I’ll add it to the list!
That wiki-how article quick take had me dying!
There are so many good wiki-how images out there.
Someone suggested the ghul genie in the comments below and I noticed there are no lore videos about them as of Feb 2023 so I'd love to see you cover them first
I probably won't run this monster, but I'll check out the genasi race for sure.
My party is visiting calimshan soon and I was reaally in the mood for some genie stuff. Oh yes it's all coming together
Excellent!
Sweet coif in the thumbnail bro
I hope you go over some of the old dragon magazine dragons some more like the yellow dragon
This is probably my favorite Monster of the Week episode but it makes me wonder if there wouldn’t be a genie of the feywild. The Shadowfell and The Feywild are located in similar places on the planar map so would it not stand to reason that souls could go there as well?
This makes you wonder about paraelemental genies.
I’ll definitely check it out!
That would be great to use as a patron for my Warlock
Now I'm curious what a feywild genie would be like, unless of course the only genie that goes there is the jann, would help to further explain the irritation the khayal have with the jann if they have domains both in the deserts of the prime and the fey. Still would like for their to be fae genies, if for no other reason than completion sake.
Thanks the work
Another addition to the genieology
welp now i know what my shadow touched sorcerer is going to become in the after life and how to incorporate them with a future campaign
Hi mate, really awesome material. I have only recently stumbled on your channel and i find your work amazing. As a fellow old (AD&D) player and ATHAS enthousiast I looked for the NIGHTMARE BEAST but to my surprise it seems that you have not presented it here. If by any chance you decide to do so please do a conversion that highlights its psionic abilities. Cheers!
I imagine a Rākshasa being smart and cunning enough to catch a khayal in its lie.
Can I recommend the Ripper from 3.5's Cityscape book? It's one of the few creatures that actually used nonlethal damage with pretty much every attack and I'd love to see how you translate that into 5e.
These guys make me think about the unhelpful messages you read in Dark Souls, you know which ones...
"Treasure ahead, therefore, try jumping"
*party falls off a cliff*
"Liar ahead"
a genie warlock who caught a Khayal in a lie and now has them bound to their lamp to use for power. Of course, I could imagine the Khayal trying to convince the other party members that they aren't evil at all and should be set free
