Those were the best radio days of my life. I know that the pirates couldn't go on forever, but they meant so much to so many. I miss them more than words can say, and every time I see a video like this it brings a year to my eyes.

I love reading comments from the experience of the listener. Thankyou Nigel! This obviously is a very romantic era. It is still hard to believe that the pop music engine, Great Britain, had only one very stiff and regulated radio channel. Until the Radio Ships. Growing up in Canada we had the CBC but also hundreds of radio stations from coast to coast in a gigantic country. With darkness additional stations piled in from the US. In Canada we had famous stations such as The Big 8 CKLW & 1050 CHUM. In the US their was WABC & WNBC in NYC. AM Radio was a listening adventure & travel without leaving home. FM & Digital are very, very dull.

I can recognise all the great offshore radio ships by sight, The Lassez Faire, Mi Amigo, The Galaxy, The Fredericia, and all the others. GREAT days...NEVER to be repeated. Unfortunately.

Caroline is still based on the Ross Revenge only anchored in the shelter of the Blackwater river.

Interesting, this was the housewife's station. The equivalent of CFRB Toronto or WNEW in NYC in this era. Bring back the Radio Ships.
