    In the late 80s I was a technician with a UK radio paging network. We had loads of pirates in London who used our pagers as a way of allowing the audience to communicate with the DJ. One enterprising DJ wanted to host a competition but as soon as he announced it our paging bureau lit up and became congested with people trying to pre-empt the competition. I contacted the DJ through the salesman who sold him the pager. We worked out that I would lock out the paging account until he announced the competition was open. I was listening to his broadcast from home and dialled into our paging switch to unlock his account the instant he announced the lines were open. When the winner was announced I blocked the account again. I was rather pleased with my creativity.

    Without the pirate radio stations a lot the music that exists today and many of the people involved in it wouldn't have existed. They owe it all to pirate radio!!

      Tony Blackburn being a great example, pirate radio in 2023 is still going in some areas, I don't think they are getting prosecuted as much as 30 years ago.

      Some of the biggest musical acts of the sixties would never have been heard of here without pirate radio. Because of them the BBC had to change all its radio stations and Radio 1 came into existence. There was no pop music on BBC radio before 1964 apart from Pick of the Pops on a Sunday night or you got Radio Luxembourg very faintly after 9.00 pm.

      I know we have the internet but I have an ‘ odd ‘ obsession with vhf & uhf reception perhaps encouraged by growing up in the 70s in central southern england where the only radio playing punk ( apart from John peel on R1 ) was Radio Victory , 22 miles distant and us being 10 miles from the fringe of the signal on 95.0 - and TVS would fill Sunday afternoons with b & w old folks movies whilst HTV West showed their regions’ teams soccer highlights. I did a rig enough to receive both but nowadays a scan up the fm dial during the day makes me angry as the sole station playing anything unusual ( old school prog rock occasionally) is a community station in Verwood and the Asian Station in Southampton. So now I have a big Dipole above my chimney and when I get round to it , will see if anywhere between Selsey Bill and Portland Bill has anything ‘ naughty ‘ ....I very much doubt it ! Regards from Wilverley Enclosure Witches

    There would be no need for pirates if commercial stations such as Radio 1, Kiss and capital played better music and stop being dictated by the majors. Hence in the 90s was when pirates commanded the airwaves in London, Radio 1 realised that and got Fabio and Grooverider on there. Pirates play what the commercial stations wont. Kiss was good before they were taken over by Emap and started playing pop.

      +Deejay Peekay Too right. Basically if there is a market that isn't being catered for by the established monopoly broadcasters then people will fix that for themselves. That's what pirates are all about. The only people that are against all this are the big corporate monopoly holders within the music industry because they realise that they aren't really needed anymore but are desperately trying to hold on to the the market.

    2:33 The records were NOT stolen they were given to pirate radio DJ's for free by record companies or band managers to promote their bands, singers and/or music events that appeared at the local dance hall or cinema.
    And the so called 'lost Royalties'' were easily re-couped at these music events and by massive record sales.
    The 'pop' music industry, promoted by Pirate Radio, was beginning to bring in millions of pounds to Great Britain and the British government wanted in on it.

      This is false. We bought 99% of our tunes. Sure there were djs on mailing lists but unless you were a known dj or was spinning on a decent pirate station, you would be lucky to get on one.

    • @retroactiveoldskool
      @retroactiveoldskool 4 роки тому +1

      The records were bought individually by the DJs. True that sometimes record companies or producers would give promotional copies to select DJs or the station which would be a communal copy to stay in the station that all DJs can use. But it is a myth that pirate DJs got paid.

    To make a microwave link they used to use an LNB from a satellite dish as the reciever end, and the transmitter end would be a horn from traffic lights, or from a shop door sensor, If i remember correctly. I have no idea what circuitry is used to modulate the signal etc, but a decent radio guy could figure all that out.

    At the beginning they said they try to stop the pirate stations because its taking money away from the artists etc. But once the pirate stations moved away from being commercial these people that try to stop the remaining stations were impacting the artists revenue negatively as it became their advertisement And yet they still thought they were on the moral high ground.
    Just because you're enforcing a law, it does not mean that law is right.

    The thing I hate about living out in the country side is the fact that I cant get any pirate radio stations anymore. When I used to live in Birmingham, I used to be able to get at least 5 when going into the City Center. They say the signal is line of sight, but you can actually see the city skyline from where I live and I can only get a faint signal on 1 pirate station called Mixfm.

    “ keeping the airwaves CLEAN “ ? In central southern england , when you tune your car or average builders’ radio , we have Capital, Breeze , Heart and Wave - Clone stations playing the Same music - then BBC Local Clone Radio playing identical content except for the “ what is your favourite colour bath towel “ type phone - in - then SMUG BBC Radio 2 playing The Bee Gees and Diana Ross and Elto and Rod day in , day out . Apart from BBC R1 , there’s no one broadcasting anything slightly diverse apart from the Ethnic and 50s stations in cities on very low power. Thank God for The Web as I cannot imagine what would’ve happened to the imaginations of Young and Growing or Interesting People. 🏴😇❤️love from The Elephants’ Graveyard of Broadcasting- Southern England

    • @xeric1953
      @xeric1953 3 роки тому

      Several reasons.. Propaganda aside, mainly they go for the people who are playing uncensored music or the broadcaster themselves swearing and also to stop people trying to take the same frequency area as a licensed station who is paying $ to use it.
      You're supposed to pay for a license and know the proper radio rules so it's like a drivers license but for the radio. A license is mainly just a physical contract that you acknowledge the rules

    • @bencolemanart
      @bencolemanart 2 роки тому

      @@xeric1953 A drivers license is available to almost anyone for very little money though, because it's in the interest of the government for us to drive and consume petrol and pay tax. Radio licenses were prohibitively expensive and the government were only handing them out to the likes of Jazz FM back in the 90s, not to the kids playing Jungle, who didn't have the means to go through the lengthy and (again) expensive application process.

    That's only when someone who doesn't know what they're doing and builds a sprog box. Someone who knows what they're doing would have tested the transmitter using a spectrum analyser. Band 1 isn't used as much because most people use microwave. The emergency services haven't used band 1 for years, they've moved to tetra airwave on 370-373 mhz. You're talking about the old 80s vfo txs. It's all a stupid law anyway. In Italy and other countries you're allowed your own tv & radio station.

      They want pirate stations to pay for licenses, dictate what they want to them say and play and get money from poor people instead of supporting the working class.

    it would be nice to see the rig builders while they build the transmitters, tune them, use band pass filters and check how clean they are on analysers,
    but they won't as that would prove they don't interfere with other services or users, or do they ??
    Anyone ever checked a rig on an analyser ??
    maybe a new video ?

    18:46 she’s chatting shit about how many listeners they were getting simultaneously and the hit rate being in the millions. Remember back then the internet was still new to a lot of people. I was part of an internet station for over 10 years from 2006 and we were quite big but never saw those numbers. Silly cow.

    The thing that people don't understand with Pirate radio between 87.5 & 108 MHz is that the frequencies which fell below it comprised of a lot of Emergency Services 9 as well as Utilities, nurses pagers and the PMR low band) . Also those which lie above 108 are the Civilian Air Band.
    When they say it could cause potential accidents, they're not trying to scare, they're being truthful.

  • @Pauldjreadman

    The authorities do not realise the reason why there are pirates in the first place. Giving people what they want. They should reduce the cost of going legal, that’s the problem

    • @bytesabre
      @bytesabre 6 років тому +1

      Pauldjreadman We have a community radio licence, really tough to get one even if you have the money to cover it. We were only the third pirate station to go legal after Caroline and Kiss and I think every large town and city should have at least one legalised pirate station.
      Also DAB sounds like underwater arse. FM forever!

  • @johnny45irish
    @johnny45irish 11 років тому +1

    If the transmitter's dodgy, they could be way off the FM broadcast band, not to mention the many harmonics they might create even within it, which can easily wipe out the whole band, if not more.
    Even if they end up broadcasting where they intend to, the potential for possible QRM (interference) is massive, especially if the ERP (Effective Radiated Power) aka, the output (in Watts) is high.

    good to see the government wasting the taxpayers money - wankers where's the crime. A close friend is a telecoms engineer who tells me alll emergency services are digital and the airports only use fm as backup.
