      Great interview, you set the tone. Dickey seemed relaxed, lucid and focused. You asked some great questions that kept him engaged, like one that I always wondered about when I was figuring out their guitar licks in the 70's, how did they come up with the idea for the harmony guitar parts? Use the guitars like a horn section!

    I played the guitar as a young man, drawn to the likes of Hendrix, Sabbath, Deep Purple, Clapton and really wasn't into southern rock.
    I was talking to an older co-worker one day back in the late 70's about who was the best guitarist. His choice was Dickey Betts and I didn't really know of Dickey's work. I didn't really look into his songs back then because I liked the heavier stuff. Then I got into listening to the Allman Brothers Band. I became a huge ABB and Betts fan.
    Dickey is a legend.

    Without Dickie, there would be no Southern Rock. I got to meet him after a show and we talked for about 15 minutes and he was so welcoming. I told him that without his contribution, the ABB would have never had the success that they enjoyed. I got a big, strong hug and a huge “Thanks” from him and I was just beside myself. His songwriting, singing, and guitar playing was second to none and his music will never grow old. Each time I hear “Ramblin Man”, I feel the same excitement I did the first time I ever heard it and that is saying a lot about a song. God bless you Dickie Betts!

    He wasn't joking about playing Bar gigs after FAM3 & FORTUN3. I saw Dickey, Greg & Dangerous Dan Toler show up to The Comic Book Club II in Atlantic Beach Florida in 1978. It was billed as a Sea Level concert which was Chuck Levealls side band when The ABB wasn't busy. It was rumored that members of The ABB were going to be there and it happened with a packed house. Anyways then in the middle of a song,they cut the power on him, cause of noise complaints and time restrictions,and I couldnt believe it,I felt ashamed of his treatment,if he never comes anywhere near here again I wouldnt blame him 1 bit,and I personally, would like to apologize to him, there were many many people there who felt the same way

You run across a good soul every once in a while but most are fake as 3 dollar bill . smug, backstabbing and arrogant and think they are entitled to everything and know everything when they know absolutely nothing and deserve to have a boot on their necks (which they will be getting soon enough in the coming Police State).

    I was fortunate to have seen Dickey Betts in 1982 with his band Great Southern To myself I cant think of another man that can write and play sing > If ts music He has nobody above him ,There is no one that has influenced me as much as Dickey Betts . He started the Allman Brothers band more or less . Gregg and Duane of coarse with Dickey and Berry Oakley were IT then and Southern Rock was BORN The sound that Dickey Betts makes is like NO OTHER Now how many can say that when you hear a note or two you know its Dickey playin That RED GUITAR Warren Haynes with his slide was like hardly another Hes Unreal. of Coarse Duane made the Allman Brothers sound as well . So put them all together and add the Legend as well Gregg Allman with his lyrics in songs he wrote was one of the best ever , Heres a Band that NEVER went Commercial Not even Ramblin man was like that ,Its a song that if you ask someone if they heard of the Allman Brothers and they say no Just atart singin that song and its OH Yah .. so as the best band in songs and the Instrumentals well That says it all .. God Speed as ::" The Last Allman " Gone as Gregg passes on... Neal Dixon wrote that song and wow what a video ,,It will HIT you hard real hard Did Me wow .Take Care The percusion dont Forget ,,, Unreal as well and not forgotten +++++++++++++++++++++++

    My god, give the guy a break. He is true genius. He has more talent pick'in and writing than any ten rappers. He is getting older things become cloudier. Worst part about it . It happens to all of us. That being said he didn't take very good care of himself. I'm sorry to say this I'm a huge ABB fan.but, Dickie has actually forgot more than Derek Trucks will ever know about a guitar.if you don't agree answer this where is Derek's Jessica or Ramblin' man. I rest my case.

    • @barryfohn4385
      @barryfohn4385 6 років тому +1

      Oh come on. I know that he writes good songs but Derek Trucks is ten times the guitarist, even at his young age, then Dicky ever was. Bett's great break was because he was next to Duane. I guess you don't play because if you did you would be able see that Derek has WAY more talent than Dicky does. Don't get me wrong I do appreciate what Dicky added to the band. One of my favorite songs of all time is a Dicky song (Blue Sky). But the thing that made that a great song was Duane's lead. When Dicky takes his break in that song it's good....but not great. Derek has gotten much of his talent by Studying Duane's recordings. Look Betts had a very important role in the band but after a time he used up all that he had to add. I can tell that your not a guitarist because if you were you would know this.

      Dickey in his day would have eaten Derek for lunch. Derek is a good player, but he is not doing anything innovative compared to Duane & Dickey. He's standing on the shoulders of giants.

    • @barryfohn4385
      @barryfohn4385 6 років тому +1

      BluesLicks101 Come on guy. Derek is 10 times the guitarist that Dickey Betts EVER was. I've been listening to them since the early 70's (I'm 62) and appreciate the role that Dickey filled in the band. Still in all Dickey is not nearly as talented as Derek is. Most of Dickey's licks are simple pentatonic scale stuff. Put it this way; you can learn Dickey's leads fairly easily. Derek's leads (both slide and straight lead) are way harder to try and copy.

      The late Dave Lyle is the guitarist Dickey is referring to. He appears on Dickey's latter album The Collectors #1.

    I agree Hazor777. Life is too short for the BS. Maybe Dangerous Dan's passing will make these great guys remember that.

    After 50 years I have only (1) one pic of a guitar player on my wall - Duane. Having said that, without Betts, there is no ABB as we know it without Dickie Betts:)

    Gregg said: He told Duane they'd never cut it as just a mind blowing jam band, they needed some SONGS or they wouldn't even make rent money. Without SONGS, Gregg would have dumped ABB. Now you will hear nothing but high galactic praise for Duane from me. But Dickey and Gregg were the prime writers. No WP, No ER, No MR, No Les Brers=No ABB.
    There's no higher moment at an ABB show today than Blue Sky. The whole crowd sings along in ecstasy and the spirit of Dickey Betts fills the hall.

    Fuck that....Allman Brothers Band nowadays is just a tribute band, with all due respect to Gregg, Warren, Butch and Jaimoe.
    It isn't really the Allman Brothers Band without Dickey.

    Great interview, and soooo good to see Mr. Betts sober during one:-/ The last interview I saw with him was devasting since he was so totally high on..."something"! A sober Betts beats anything and anyone....anyday!!! Btw, how the hell does he get his beyound amazing guitartone?? I've tried EVERYTHING, but I can't nail his tone! He's got that middy tone even when using the bridge pup, and I can't figure out how he's doing it!?! Anyone???

      A piece of interesting trivia about Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys... J D Tippitt, before he was shot on Nov. 22, 1963, had plans to see them later that night.

    Went and saw the ABB at California MidState Fair in Paso Robles in 1996. About 2/3’s the way through the concert the band took a quick break. Dickie apparently did to big a shot of heroin and couldn’t come back out and finish the show. Gregg came out and announced that Dickie started feeling bad and needed to go to the hospital. Warren Haynes had to finish the concert with no Betts! You could tell by Gregg’s voice that he was highly agitated by the situation. Save the dope for after the show Forrest! 😂😂😂
