The Devon Allman Project’s recent tour united two sons of rock royalty, with Duane Betts, son of Dickey Betts, joining Allman onstage for some foreshadowing: Later this spring, they’re unveiling their new group, the Allman Betts Band, with a new album and a series of concerts.
During their gig at Nashville’s Exit/In, they played a mix of originals and classic page-turners from their families’ songbook, while preparing to write their own chapter. And, as PG senior editor Ted Drozdowski learned, they brought some cool and classic gear along for the ride. This rundown starts with some gorgeous vintage guitar straps used by Greg and Duane Allman.
This limited-run Gibson Robbie Krieger signature model SG is a recent acquisition. “When we do ‘Dreams’ and ‘One Way Out,’ I pick up this guitar,” says Allman, who makes it a point to play as least a few Allman Brothers tunes every night. It has ’57 Classic pickups and push-pull phase switching on the neck pickup.
Among the guitars once owned by his father, Gregg Allman, on this tour, is this 1961 Fender Stratocaster, which might sport a ’50s neck. The pickups were replaced with an unknown boutique brand and an anodized gold-foil pickguard has been installed. “I didn’t realize how many guitars my dad had,” says Allman, “He had 43, and he left them all to me. And when I saw this one, I was like ‘You’re the man, pop!’ This is the one.” A photograph from the 1972 sessions for Brothers and Sisters shows Gregg Allman playing this Strat.
Here’s the prototype for Gibson’s 114-piece run of the Dickey Betts Les Paul goldtop, which was done in 2001, with aging by Tom Murphy. It’s got ’57 Classic humbuckers. Of course, the model is based on Betts’ own vintage ’57 goldtop. This one is Duane Betts’ main stage guitar and, for a while, it was his dad’s as well. You can hear it at the start of this Rig Rundown.
These guys are hilarious. So used to gear geeks, it’s kinda refreshing to hear “I don’t know man, it’s uh, you know, a guitar, and it sounds good to I play it a lot.”

It'd be really hard to conduct this interview with feeling those little twinges of envy. These young dudes were born into rock and roll royalty and have access to all those beautiful instruments and all of that history. They have probably met everybody worth meeting and have known them since they were children. Such a cool legacy.

I'm also from Bradenton Florida. I met Gregg Allman at the Cortez car wash in the 80s. We also met Dickey Betts in a restaurant at longboat key. They were both really nice and down to earth.

Allman's Beacon shows 1997..... I saw Dickie with Jack Pearson when he was playing that stratocaster..... I'm old enough to have seen Duane play three times before he passed..... Duane and Dickie were my inspiration to learn how to play guitar.....

one of the things i loved about it was the massively powerful mid control. dial it up and push into glorious vintage Marshall type tones. dial it back and push the treble a touch and flirt with blackface-type cleans. you can leave the volume at one setting and go from clean to ripping rhythm crunch with just the mid control.
Maybe you should have done this rig rundown......he didn't know much about his gear at all.

A recent Zebo type guitar strap from Chicago would be a reproduction. Ted "Zebo" Starker passed away in 2015. He was always located in the Sarasota FL area, as far as I know.

You’re not alone on that!
It looks disconcerting, but it does work and can sound good. Its 90 degrees off axis, so when you blend it with an on axis mic it'll phase in interesting ways. You can also run it that way to mic the back of an open backed cab.
@@JalenRawley Yeah, it's not "correct", but I can't tell you how many gigs I played (before I knew anything about recording) where the sound guy did that, and it worked fine. I sounded good out front, which was what counted.

Ted (interviewer) needs to turn up the gain on his social intelligence. He's interviewing what appears to be a very nice guy and musician and all he can do is pepper him with super technical questions. Maybe after Devon says, "I don't know" for the 5th time, you should have backed of the ultra gear geek level questions like, "what kind of speaker is in this cabinet?" Come on Ted, does it really matter?
Senior Editor Premier Guitar and the only thing he can ask is "what pickups are in there?".... and he keeps asking as if Devon might know what pickups are in the next guitar, or the next. Who cares. How 'bout engaging a conversation like "well, what is it about this guitar that you like? what songs do you use this song on ... why?" Oh, instead all the dude can think to ask "what year is it". Really, I am surprised Ted doesn't ask to see if the serial numbers match on the neck and body. What sort of interview is this. Ted needs to stay in the office and leave interviews to guys like John Bollinger or someone who actually understands guitars.
Keep this interviewer in the office. That was hard to watch and you could tell the guys weren't into him.
