- Happy New Year! 2023 is in the books and we’re sneaking our best of the year thoughts just under the wire! It was a wild year for the movie business and who knows how much we’ll actually get next year because of it. In the meantime though, there was plenty to celebrate about 2023 in cinemas. From kaiju action epics on a budget, to both halves of Barbenheimer, indies that aren’t really indies and directorial debuts that blew us away, here are our picks for the 10 best movies of 2023.
While action franchises like Mission: Impossible and John Wick delivered exponentially more of what they’re known for, others went back to their roots. Horror films gave us more Evil Dead and a terrifying movie dressed up as a comedy from Ari Aster. Both Barbie and Oppenheimer surged in the box office but they might not have even been the best movie that came out that day. Meanwhile we got more Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Ridley Scott and Hayao Miyazaki which is never a bad thing! All that to say, 2023 was pretty great!
The Picks:
10 - Action Blockbuster - Godzilla Minus One - dir. Takashi Yamazaki
9 - Documentary - Beyond Utopia - dir. Madeleine Gavin
8 - Animation - The Boy and The Heron - dir. Hayao Miyazaki
7 - Horror - Talk to Me - dir. Michael and Danny Philippou
6 - Thriller - Killers of the Flower Moon - dir. Martin Scorsese
5 - Sci Fi Fantasy - They Cloned Tyrone - dir. Juel Taylor
4 - Comedy - Poor Things - dir. Yorgos Lanthimos
3 - Indie Drama - Asteroid City - dir. Wes Anderson
2 - Foreign - The Taste of Things - dir. Tranh Anh Hung
1 - Prestige Drama - The Zone of Interest - dir. Jonathan Glazer
This movie list was written and edited by Billy Jackson.

Thank you for doing this! Happy New Year!
Thanks!
In the Horror section: The first one, the black and white, is "El Conde"
They showed Scream 6 at the start of Horror, the tense grocery store scene. Hard not to miss Ghostface's mask.
19:35 "We hate to repeat ourselves." Shot of Tarkovsky's Mirror.🤣
Excellent call-back to the pre-IGN days
When it comes to Tarkovsky, yes please!
Thanks to the CineFix team for putting up this list, it's always a pleasure for movie lovers like me to find out what we've missed.
There now is a new pirate metal band that consist of 5 stunning beautiful women. Called Pirate Queen. Check out their first video here: ua-cam.com/video/wdI388LjgnI/v-deo.htmlsi=ngaN0gPU04AhLC07
Exactly why I enjoy these list.
Watch Jigarthanda Double X and thank me later 😊 One of the highest rated movies of 2023, it's a gangster drama with dark comedy, political themes, and is constructed an an ode to cinema through its theme, meta plot and movie references. (Loosely connected prequel to Jigarthanda, 2014, great too but not on the same scale)
They're edgy art kids. Only pick old movies and trynna be cool.
This list isn't even close to 2023 best
I wanna add to the chorus and say that i also really miss the titles of the movies at the bottom of the screen.
The great thing about these top 10 of movies of the year was always the amount of movies that are shown/mentioned and having the titles on screen helped to look for them.
Yeah, what happened? I remember the titles were there before. This is silly and frustrating.
I'm more than frustrated with this exact issue. It's one of the big reasons why I loved & recommended Cinefix to people for so long (before IGN ofc). Sometimes it's one of those random movie mentions that is more eye-catching than the actual pick. In fact, often it is one of those random mentions.
Godzilla Minus One is an unexpected masterpiece. I never thought a Godzilla movie could make me cry and leave me broken hearted but there it is.
“They Cloned Tyrone” ABSOLUTELY deserves to be on this list! Can’t believe how under the radar this film went! It’s a masterpiece from start to finish and holds amazing rewatchability!
Finally seeing a bigger film media company talk about they cloned Tyrone makes me so happy. I LOVED that movie so so much
10. Godzilla minus one - action
9. Beyond Utopia - documentary
8. The boy and the heron - animated
7. Talk to me - horror
6. Killers of the flower moon - thriller
5. They cloned Tyrone - best July 21st movie
4. Poor things - comedy
3. Asteroid City - drama
2. The taste of things - foreign film
1. The zone of interest -top film of the year
holdovers maestro ??
What about the mentions
My man!
Yeah I want the mentions
Thank you.
That detail of the burning house from "The Mirror" when narrator said they hate to repeat themselves was pure gold. 19:30
pure gold exactly
@@rockinoff21 - Yes, it was pure gold
Clint gage’s narration is one of the most dependable parts of every year’s end. ❤
Is it him? He sounds different
Audio so much better! Nice quick reupload, and a pretty solid list. I got Monster as best movie of the year but I’m heavily biased on the Kore eda/Sakamoto masterpiece
I didn't realize it was a reupload, I leave this comment here to help the algorithm
I was just about to ask what's up with the audio in this video. Was the mic recording even more muffled in the original upload? Glad they fixed it to this point then, but I wonder what had happened.
THANK YOU for re-uploading!
The soundtrack is awesome, but Clint Gage’s voice is awesome-r.
Have a great new year, CineFix!
My favorite channel on UA-cam

Why doesn't this comment has more likes? Very helpful. Thank you!
We needed this!..U are respected!
Brilliant!
The last line, haha
But Im shocked the comments and likes arent as I expected. Blasphemy to our hero
Thank you!
It's wonderful when these lists happen to both agree with some of your own choices (The Zone of Interest, Asteroid City, Poor Things in my case) as well as throw a curve ball and introduce you to something new (They Cloned Tyrone). Looking forward to checking out some of these other suggestions.
They Cloned Tyrone I'm watching that one next, never heard it before, but looks great!
Basically the reason I always wait for their list, they always come with those great curve balls
Zone of interest, idk
They Cloned Tyrone was a wonderful surprise
If I may give another recommendation:
Watch Jigarthanda Double X and thank me later 😊 One of the highest rated movies of 2023, it's a gangster drama with dark comedy, political themes, and is constructed an an ode to cinema through its theme, meta plot and movie references. (Loosely connected prequel to Jigarthanda, 2014, great too but not on the same scale)
Another rec is Sapta Sagaradaache Ello (Side A & Side B), hard hitting romantic drama about a young couple dealing with separation when the man goes to prison.
Saw “Anatomy of a fall” yesterday. Wasn’t expecting to like it but was blown away.. it really is a Masterpiece. The plot, the pacing, how they foster doubt as to the truth behind the accident, the depth of the characters, some surprising quirks in the cinematography, the performances. When it ends you are intrigued and disturbed yet in awe of it. For once a Palme d”Or has real substance. Its a Great film that is a great story with good tension. Best film in a long time.. Cinefix you should watch it again because it deserves a lot more than the mention you gave it.
I feel like a pretty big movie guy then Cinefix drops a list and I realize I ain't even scratched the surface of 2023. 😭
If I may give another rec:
Watch Jigarthanda Double X and thank me later 😊 It's a gangster drama with dark comedy, political themes, and is constructed an an ode to cinema through its theme, meta plot and movie references. (Loosely connected prequel to Jigarthanda, 2014, great too but not on the same scale)

Both have very high ratings but are sadly mostly unknown in the west because it's from Indian cinema 😩
Thank you so much for the quick audio fix! Appreciate any channel that listens to feedback so well. Great list!
They Cloned Tyrone is funny good. A hidden gem indeed.
Y'all really are the best! They Cloned Tyrone just shot to the top of my list. I also appreciate the Suzume shout out. That's my favorite film of the year so far.
I personally wouldn't put Asteroid City in the top 10 at all. It was Wes Anderson doing meta Wes Anderson. The storytelling was the story, and hence the story was bad, the characters didn't have enough screen time to sink in, and I was left wanting for another Grand Budapest. To each there own but it felt like Community's Abed making a movie about Abed.
It's a terrible, neurotic film.
My least favorite Anderson movie. I was so disappointed. Should not be on this list. Agree that none of the characters had enough time to sink in and have weight. Fridging the mom at the start of the movie is lazy too.
Watching Asteroid City is like listening to the dialogue in my head going round and round with itself. I loved it. You guys always have something unique to add to the conversation and I'll definitely be going through a lot of your list. Happy New Year!
Man THANK YOU for putting They Cloned Tyrone on this list. No else has done that so far. I didn’t even realize it dropped on the same day as those other films...
They Cloned Tyrone was so freaking GOOD! Glad to see it made the list
thank you so much for reposting with improved sound! it was a pleasure to watch and as always left me wanting to watch a bunch of movies. Poor Things is up for tonight. Happy new year!
How do you keep making me fall back in love with cinema again?
I live for this list every year, even when I’m not 100% aligned on the picks. Great job as always!
whoever changed the sound and reuploaded it: Thanks, you are great. And again, thanks for the whole video, happy new year!
I’m so glad They Cloned Tyrone made it on the 2023 movie list!!! Such a good movie!
Thank you for this list. Most of these are on my list when they begin streaming. Happy New Year!
Kudos for acknowledging that the Margot Robbie scene in Asteroid City is one of the most emotionally moving scenes from the last year. So depressing
Robbie stole Asteroid City, in much the same way she stole Amsterdam. She was the only character allowed to actually breath naturally.
I really haven't been keeping up this year, but so far The Iron Claw was the movie i enjoyed the most this year. A bit sad to not see it get a shout out from you guys.
a24 dropped the ball with it's release, so I don't blame them for not including it. not many people have had a chance to watch it yet by year end.
I had extremely high expectations but it didn't crack my top 10. I thought it was Solid.

I've seen three of the movies, I can't afford streaming services and rarely make it to the movie theater. Thank you for your breakdown of these films
Man, did I have a different experience at Asteroid City. So flat and emotionally empty to me.
Awesome list! I haven't made my way through those shown yet, but so happy to see some Asteroid City appreciation. Its now in my top 5 of all time and I think a lot of people quickly wrote it off for being to whimsical...when it's one of the deepest movies out there. Good stuff! 👍
People wrote it off because the movie is boring asf. Literally nothing happens in the first half of the movie.
@ririswan6352 "Literally nothing happens in the first half of the movie..." would describe a humongous chunk of cinema as a whole, and probably a one hundred percent of the greatest films ever made.
If I may give another rec:

Zone of interest is a monumental achievement of the art form in its totality, the human compliance, the evil we choose not to see but it lingers in the corners…
Taste of thing is one of the most marvelous and gentle movies of the last decade… thanks for bringing it on!
Your really great script on this video is impressive. I watch plenty of UA-cam pieces like this, but wow, between the scripting and how it was read, this really worked well. Great editing and all that, sure. But what a great read. It felt like a friend telling me about this and not an ANNOUNCER.
Great as always, many films I didn't know about until today which definitely are a must watch now.
But a comment on your edition, it is nice you try to add the title card of the movie (in its own font) entering the list, but I really like the old method, the ribbon where you put the name, year and director.
Same goes to the little 'subtitle like' info about the movies you mention that didn't get on the final list, as a non native english speaker it was really helpful to know the names of those, and since they are not mention on the description it is more difficult to get a grasp on them.
Please think about yourselves as a global chanel, as you were before IGN.
Agreed on how useful the ribbon was, especially for the mentions. When I put the transcript on, it was a lot easier to follow though, so I could reconstruct the list, but yes, the ribbon was great.
Thank you CineFix for all you do. Your videos are always great
Clint you were born to narrate videos about cinema , for me you are the best by far !!!
I always love how you break your lists down to genres/categories instead of a generic top 10
Great list! Was hoping for a mention for Fallen Leaves by Aki Kaurismäki in the foreign section. Brilliant movie from a genius director who should be talked about more in my opinion.
The ending of The Zone of Interest…absolutely brilliant
Is that a streaming movie? And if so, where? Please advise
@@alisterfolson As of right now, it’s in a limited theatrical release
So glad you guys have They Cloned Tyrone in your list!
Was waiting for this.. thanks cinefix
You guys are the best both in front and behind the scenes. Thanks for doing all this.
Great video froa great year
The video and the list we all wait for every year :)
most waited "end of the year" video is out and is totally worth the hype!!! thank you guys
Yo, your list is the best I've seen so far for this year 👏
Kudos to the editor putting in that shot from The Mirror as Clint was saying “We wouldn’t want to repeat ourselves” 😂😂😂 IYKYK
Cineflix: “we would give to Oppenheimer, but since it was viewed by more than 500 people, we’d rather give to this Iranian movie recorded with a Motorola V3 and premiere in a church basement in a small city in Sri Lanka”
Exactly, it can be tiresome for them to pick the constant hipster opinion for best movies.
Pick 5 was the easy way out (as to piss no one off), nm your list is the one I most looked forward, like every year.
Another great list. I was hoping for a mention of 12th Fail. The best film that came out of Bollywood this year.
Happy New Year Cinefix!
I love that this gives runners up in the categories as well. Even more movies to think about watching.
Oh boy… so many new movies to check out 🤣👍💪 happy new year! Keep up the good the work! Love your content.

Have seen Double X 💪👍 great recommendation. The end could have been stronger, but otherwise a bonkers good time, totally agreed!
@@Badvision Awesome! Have you seen the 2014 Jigarthanda?
Let me know what you think of Sapta Sagaradaache Ello if you watch it. Part 1 (Side A) is on Prime, I don't know for part 2 though.
As always its an amazing list. Cant wait to check so many of these out

Why are you so good at making me want to watch these movies
Oppenheimer not here is WILD
Same for Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse
Your 2022 #1 pick completely wrecked me, can't wait for this year's to do the same !
It would have been nice if you were to list all of the mentioned films in the description section, as you raced through them too quickly to get to the winning film (i was interested in the contenders as well)🤷♂
I was thinking that as well! So following the transcript alongside the video, I made the list, see my comment further down for the whole list
I really missed the titles at the bottom of the screen. They always made it way easier to keep up with the rapid fire lists.
So much better! Thank you!
Great list, thanks for giving me more suggestions of good stuff to watch!

Awesome list CineFix, tons of movies I didn't know
Good list! The cop out on Barbenheimer is so funny!
That was an utterly brilliant deep dive into the astonishing, beautiful, mesmerising and frightening films of 2023. Thank you.

If Iron Claw is not on the list I can’t take it serious
It's only just come out, hasn't it? Maybe they haven't seen it yet. 🤷♀
That's EXACTLY how I feel when it comes to Spider-man Across The Spider-Verse
I've been struggling to find good movies to watch nowadays. Then I found this video and this channel. Great and one of a few that I activate the notification bell!❤

Bravo. I also loved They Cloned Tyrone. Great choice.
I just saw "They Cloned Tyrone" and wow totally deserves top 10 movies of 2023.
Poor things sounds nuts. Im in!
oh my god, the Zone of Interest was the most amazing film! Love your list!!
This channel has some amazing writing. I really enjoy your insane never ending list of adjectives when describing films Cinefix!!
Great list and so much I need to watch, particularly fascinated by #1 and cannot just ride the Asteroid City train, is there such thing as Wes Anderson fatigue, because I have it, to me it's just more of the same and nothing from him is challenging anymore, but maybe I'll give it another chance considering your position of it on the list. Thank you! Loved your mention of El Conde, but surprised I didn't see Across the Spiderverse in the animation segment.
The soundtrack is still a bit too loud in some places but it's much better overall now. Thanks for the quick re-upload.
Like many of the movies they mentioned here, this video was much better than it had any right to be. Well done guys.
Damn..That was really Truly good.. I’m impressed
A descent explanation of most films with tact And personal opinion Without being overbearing by the critics personality. Every take was interesting to listen to, I am honestly impressed. I hope you said more about the international films I barely got their titles though.
Regardless and with no nitpicking I Look forward to your continued reviews, and Thanks Always for mentioning unconventional and less mainstream films and shows. Much Needed

I am curious, since both are foreign films, which do you rank where outside of genre between The Taste of Things and The Zone of Interest? Do you stick with TToT because you named it best foreign? That would mean you prefer it over TZoI, right? Or if you were classifying outside of genre where it you could not have two films occupy the same slot, would you rank TZoI ahead of TToT? Again, both are foreign, and both are dramas, which intrigues me of how you would rank them against one another.
“Inside” was my favorite
A refreshing list that strays a bit outside the conventional thinking. Thanks for highlighting a few that I probably would have missed otherwise.

Damn that voice is becoming so Iconic! the lists are alwats pristine af.
MY TOP 10 MOVIES 2023 (Warning: middle aged man bias)
10. Trolls 3: Band Together - Let's start off with my most quirky choice. Because of my 6 year old daughter watching this a zillion times, this film played a big part of our family life for the past couple of months. The flick has no right being this good, after a middling first movie and lousy second entry. Banging soundtrack!
9. The Covenant - tight action, never dull, a new kind of Guy Ritchie film
8. Poor Things - weird, wild, a hard R rating, funny, Emma stone command performance
7. John Wick Chapter 4 - everything you want in an over the top action flick
6. They Cloned Tyrone - blaxploitation meets sci-fi meets comedy. Just so, so good and thoroughly entertaining
5. The Killer - super underrated. An upper tier Fincher flick, if you are a fan of that director
4. Spider-Man: Across the Spider Verse- at least as good as the first one. Quality from beginning to end.
3. Super Mario Bros. Movie - so earnest, totally family friendly, sweet, pure, and yes that’s 3 animated films on my list
2. The Holdovers - harkens back to a simpler time of flimmaking. The performances and direction just stuck with me, for days and even weeks after watching. Touchign without ever being saccharine or twee.
1. Oppenheimer - the front runner for best picture, and for good reason. Compelling, staggeringly brilliant filmmaking
Runners up:
Barbie- a delightful comedic treat
The Creator. Incredible Sci-FI premise, with stunning visuals. Almost fantastic, the lead actor brought down the energy of the film
Beau Is Afraid: a crazy, kooky movie. Out there surreal horror. Not for everyone, but as a middle aged man I connected with it in bizarre ways
Inside: starts off pretty standard and then becomes a bonkers Art/experimental film, and I’m here for it. Without William Dafoe it’s a pass, but he makes the movie.
BlackBerry: thoroughly watchable little dramedy. Nothing mind-blowing, but solid and fun.
Killers of the Flower Moon: Let’s get honest, this movie should be on my Top 10 list instead of Trolls 3. It was so good. But so long. Incredible direction and acting. But did I mention it’s long? Would’ve preferred the piece chopped into 8-10 chapters and served up as a miniseries.
Another rec is Sapta Sagaradaache Ello (Side A & Side B), a hard hitting romantic/action drama about a young couple dealing with separation when the man goes to prison.
Both have very high ratings but are sadly mostly unknown in the west because it's from Indian cinema 😩
well done, thx
I appreciate the spotlight on movies that aren't in the mainstream spotlight

Loved "Talk to Me" creepy even watched with the lights all on! Oh, and "Smile" was a good one too!
Movie industry is going nuts. So many good releases lately, I had to get a Regal subscription to keep up.

Great list
The fact that Past Lives was not chosen is a crime that will not be forgiven.
good selection! Some I've seen, some I'm waiting to be released and some I need to add to my watchlist!
Past Lives is not foreign cinema though, it is actually an American movie (but yeah I understand why it's in this category :) )
Seeing Godzilla right away ❤ that movie pulled so much emotion out of me in each viewing I’ve had so far (3 times Ahaha) it’s just, the best Kaiju film in decades, ever maybe
Kinda miss the titles of the films shown on screen, as they help to choose films based on the images, but great list as always!
Yeah, I want to know the movie with people on the beach watching the ship.
@@LdeV26 that was Leave the World Behind 😉
Sneaking in a shot under the guise of self-deprecation is almost as good as your videos are. Once again, I thank all of you. Perhaps this year I will finally watch The Mirror. Please help reminding me.
Audio is good now, happy new year 🎉😅😊
Definitely agree with your take on They Cloned Tyrone
I love Cinefix lists because I get 50+ movies instead of just 10
