We've stared at onboards of the car from Watkins Glen for a WHILE at the office. I've asked to watch the bumper cam more times than I want to admit 😂 The audio is epic.
I had an 850 T5r for a short while, amazing car. You could literally buy a closet in Ikea, shove it in the back and do some laps on the Nurburgring on the way home ! It's a car from a forgotten era and such amazing motor vehicles will never be made again....
Same here! My first car. Made a whopping 400-450 WHP. Sadly i ended up on "black ice" (because of snow cannons and -30c) coming into a turn leading into a tunnel under a ski-bridge, making the car skid and then get full grip when entering the tunnel. Couldn't even react before i hit the wall and the airbag exploded and burning up half of my face.
I’m 16 living I the UK and I have just got my 850 wagon. Man is this inspiring. I don’t have the budget but little by little I am hoping the fun the car and upgrading it wil o bring will help bring it ack to its former glory and make the time worth it. Great servers guys thanks for the viewing!
This is an incredible build. Only thing I was left desiring was stiffer valve springs, racing cams, higher compression pistons, and some E85. But props for this build, I hope it brings the attention to the N/A platform that it truly deserves. Everyone’s so turbo crazy, but I love the simplicity, torque and sound of the N/As much more
The car that fueled my obsession for the mid 90's R wagons. Even to this day, I LOVE how those old R wagons look. Awesome job guys! Really enjoyed the video
I was at Donnington race circuit, the first time I saw the 850 Estate in action. All these relitively small cars wizzing round the track, when suddenly the massive ( by comarisan ) Volvo comes into veiw. What a sound, what a sight. Amazing. Becsuse of its size, people at the track said it would be not competitive, wow, were they ever proven wrong. Probably the most memorable car on the BTCC in that era. Thanks for bringing back fantastic memories. Your car looks great, sounds even better, do enjoy it. Well done to everyone who worked on her, kerping the dream alive.
5 cylinders are just one of the best sounding engines when they breathe right. Thank you for building this, as a BMW tech who prefers old Volvos, loved the ITBs!!!!
Bitter-sweet video! Have enjoyed this series so much but everything comes to an end. Congratulatuons on the final result, now we just need a lengthy raw sound video of this thing hammering around the track for some ASMR therapy!
As born in the 70s up here in Sweden the 850 is the last Volvo I liked the look of. A little square look but smooth round the edges. Seeing a 850 T-gul (T-yellow) with the best looking original Volvo rims brings fond memories. Cool build!
Fantastic project i was there when it all happened at Thruxton UK 4th April 1994 when Rickard Rydell #15 & Jan Lammers #14 turned up in the TWR Volvo Racing 850 cars with the toy Dogs in the back! It was bright and sunny unlike what you had at Limerock and apart from Alfa Corsa and the amazing Alfa 155TS's all the other cars were boring in comparison. Gabriele Tarquini in the Alfa 155TS won on the day and dominated the season check out the videos of his 31st July 1994 Knockhill crash which shows the vital importance of Roll cages which was good to see the importance you put on putting one in your 850. The BTCC 850's were so stiff it was awesome to see these amazing estates up on 2 wheels off of the curbs. Looking forward to seeing more of your projects.
@@fcpeuro it’s still on the road. I posted its registration on a forum and the current owner responded to me, 18 years after I had sold it. He even sent me photos of it. In fact the photo he sent, he owns 4 Gul yellow Volvos
The 850 estate is my favourite British touring car of all time. It was different to every car in the field. It looked different to everything else because it wasn't common to see a wagon in the field and it sounded different to everything else because of it's 5 cylinder engine. And what a noise! It sounds glorious
One of the benefits of being a now 50+year old from England means I was lucky enough to attend most of the BTCC races in person through all sorts of weather...... I want to congratulate you on a great tribute 855...... Now can we all an alfa 155 tribute to go alongside it ??????
O-M-G!!!!! I love this car. You honestly made a true tribute car. I can only give all my respect to you guys who worked on this ride and making it awesome. Swede aproved!
Watching the old BTCC Volvos going round tge back suspension is nearly solid! You should try stiffening up the back and adding some tire pressure, see if you pick up any time?
What an amazing episode. I’m not saying that because both me and my truck were in this one.. hahaha. I genuinely love how it all came together and how amazing the shooting and editing has been on this series. Amazing work.
This whole project has taken me back to learning to drive in my dad's 850 SE with the 2.5L 10 valve engine. No amazing performance, but a great car and one of the best sounds around from those 5 cylinders...... 'huh, why am i looking at 850's for sale currently.......? maybe i need another project car once my suby is up and running again' ;)
That was a very well made video! Very nice result too, those graphics on it are great! Now i'm more motivated to work on the V70 i bought from a junkyard :)
I remember these cars in the BTCC with Rydell driving. Remember them saying the estate body was more aerodynamic than the 4 door version which I always though was odd. Anyone remember the huge crash Rydell had into the Armco?
I got a Macco paint job done once, it had more orange peal than the state of Florida, more overspray than a fleet of demolition derby cars, and the clear coat peal, yeah they painted right over it all for a measly $1400. yes they redid it, and then I had it wet sanded and buffed, still not great but better. Oh, and a brand new cracked windshield, luckily the window shop replaced under warranty despite it being Maccos fault, Macco refused to take responsibility. Took three days to remove overspray, engine was coated.
@@fcpeuro I know, just pointing out not all of us are as lucky to have quality services, kudos on that shop ;). BTW the 850 looks as awesome as it sounds now.
Would have been cool to get one of the engines that they used back in the days for these Volvo estate BTCC racingcars, 5 cylinders, 280bhp @8500 rpm and no turbo. But those engines are probably impossible to buy or even get a hold off. But that would be an sound you wanna hear :)
Hmm, from memory Volvo only used the saloon model for 1-2 seasons and then went back to the estate as it had better aerodynamics 👍 Hence, your 850 is what most UK BTCC fans would remember 😉
The estate only ran 1994, the saloon ran 95 and 96 when the aero regs said the rear aero element couldnt be behind the line of the taillights rendering the estate obsolete. The reason you remember is because of the 1994 marketing - with a dog in the boot
Because this kinda sounds like the last episode, I'm giving you ideas. Because the original was a 2.0 NA 5 cylinder engine that made about 280hp, i hope this will convince you to do a new season with the engine swap and tuning. I know the car is not a replica but a tribute, but still, this can't be the last episode
I need a 20min recording of this thing going around the track so I can sooth myself to sleep with that engine note every night
We can make that happen Willem 👌
Oh my gosh Willem yessss this is a great idea

Fun to see you here Willem

Don’t like the e85, but good cams+springs would help, compression too. That ethanol eats up the additive packs in oil… imo not worth it!
you dont need pistons. just skim off the head 0,2-0,4mm and porting, only that will bump upp power on that build.
Big center lock wheels needed!! Epic build and sounds

An awesome tribute build to my favourite BTCC racecar, hope to see more of it still
We've got some bonus episodes sitting in the hopper 😁
The best brick ever. I own one. Finest thing Sweden has ever produced after Ikea and smörgåsbord.
I SAW THIS THING IN PERSON it looks even better in real life, honestly such a good build and such motivation to build my own S60
Beautiful end to an amazing season! Thanks again for having me up guys, that was a week I'll never forget. 😍

Owned a gul 850 T5R years ago as it was always my dream, as a child I watched BTCC and always loved how an estate overtook everyone
What ever happened to it!? The estate out there racing was really something special

Was born to late to see the 850btcc in action, but it sure is great to be able to daily an tuned 850 estate every day🫶🤤
Just parked my winter beater CRV, and started driving my V70T5. Feels like more than a 100 HP difference.
This is awesome. I had a 1998 V70 T5 Wagon. I missed that car and even missed it more while watching this series. Wish I can build one just like this!

Youre thinking of Kelvin Burt at Oulton Park. It knocked him unconscious that impact, horrific!
@Volvo Composites thanks for the correction 👍. It was horrendous but testament to how strong that car was.
It would be awesone to see that on brands hatch 🤤
100% DV of wholesome at the end.
