  • Quetiapine is a second-generation (atypical) antipsychotic. It’s approved by the FDA for schizophrenia, acute bipolar mania/mixed and depression, and bipolar maintenance (as an add-on to lithium or divalproex). The extended-release form is also approved as an add-on for depression.
Though its approved uses are limited, it’s widely used off-label as a single therapy for depression, anxiety, insomnia, OCD, and other conditions.

One last thing Austin, look into Micro-dosing Magic Mushrooms. The study results are awesome and show success percentages far higher than antidepressants. I did try it a few times but its hard to find. John Hopkins did a huge study on people who were just told they were dying of terminal illnesses. Imagine how a depression and/or anxiety would go into hyperdrive if you do not want to die, but you're going to in a very short time. I believe the success rate was 85% using psilocybin to treat/ They say because depression is the most debilitating disorder in the world (every 40 secs someone kills themselves) this will become much bigger than weed. It helps with other things as well.

@@michaelfarar4232 I've never had the best experience with mushrooms. Usually get the runs so bad I think I'm poisoned and ruin the trip. Maybe smaller doses would handle better in my gut. I've also had cancer 2x so I know how that illness depression is. The best thing I've found for depression is to just keep moving. Stopping and ruminating are your enemies. My buddy put it as "if you're depressed, you're just feeling sorry for yourself" . I know depression well. It can be debilitating. But it's your life and up to you to make it what you want. If something is holding you back, you may need to sit and figure it out. But when you turn it all off you're only stunting your own growth.

I had to take this as a single pill dose after having a bad psychotic episode, and not sleeping for around a week. I forced myself to stop taking it despite my paranoia associated with my delusions, and auditory hallucinations, and I now feel a lot better. Reminding me of what happened does kind of cause a little pain in my head, but overall I feel soooooo much better than I had before I had the psychotic episode. Sometimes a change in environment/brain function due to age can cause these huge episodes. I don't want to say that you can always recover without the dose, but on such a low dose, I feel like you can get over it in over a month like I did, if you can withstand the compulsions and obsessive thoughts for long enough. You just kind of have to let your brain torment you for long enough, (and hopefully get enough sleep) and there's a good chance that your problems will revert, whilst your brain function kind of improves or adjusts to a new form of life. Don't be afraid, and you can get through it. That's what I will say to you after being involuntarily kept in hospital for over 2 weeks and refusng to take any drugs as often as possible (I was forced to on 4 separate days due to aggression, the first three in hospital and one a week in, firstly on ativan + risperidome, then risperidome for two days, then quetiapine a day a week later). I can say that I am more normal now than I ever have been in my life, kind of. Moving out and turning almost 25 was the cause of the stresses that made me have this psychotic episode, probably because life the way it was at my parents house was so delusionally structured compared to most normal people. Anyways... They prescribed it to me as needed just in case and I haven't taken it since, but it was very hard at first. Now, most of the delusions that would bother me have been dissipated, to a much more realistic understanding of the world. I continue to improve, so just throwing away the drugs would probably be best for me soon. Take care, though and have a good one.

I can say from personal experience, that the long-term or off-label prescription of anti-psychotics for the treatment of conditions/disorders other than bipolar disorder and schizophrenia should be outlawed. These drugs changed my personality, made me gain weight tremendously and played a significant part in the breakdown of a 7 year relationship. I was prescribed 10mg olanzapine for insomnia after being diagnosed with OCD and general anxiety disorder at age 27. Within a year the damage was done.

I feel like there's legitimate uses for these antipsychotics for sure, but I also feel like they're overprescribed to friggin just anybody. They in the mental hospital? Give em this, that'll shut em up. Then when I got out I felt like a zombie every friggin day, so badly so that even the bad crew I was with would comment about how zombielike I looked.

I started taking this medication for sleep in 2021, this was also the same time I was diagnosed with Bipolar 1. At first it was great and I got consistent sleep, but slowly it was losing its effectiveness. Slowy thought the years the dosage was increased and now I am on 200mg and me and my doctor and slowing lowering my dose and swapping for Abilify for sleep. The biggest reason we a swapping is the late night food bingeing, and the worst for me the next day sedation. The extreme hunger causes me to eat sometimes 4 PB&Js in my bed, waking up with crumbs and jelly smeared into my sheets. The feeling goes that I am about to fall asleep and then I get the most extreme hunger I have ever had so I eat, then fall asleep after. The next day sedation is the worst, I will set sometimes 7 alarms and not wake up. Sometimes I get out of bed and make a cup of coffee and drink it in my chair, and fall back asleep in the chair. I hope this helps for anyone starting Serequel. It is a good medication but these are some of the things you should know.

I take seroquel. The effects I notice are EXTREME tiredness. Also it seems to lessen the effects of my emotions. I used to feel like a raw nerve emotionally. I was a likeable person and enjoyable to be around for the most part, but I was prone to over reaction and even the smallest perceived slight by others would make me intensely angry for sometimes years. This of course is a problem. I no longer have these issues, BUT neither do I have the passion I once had. I have next to no desire to do anything with my life now. I could very easily spend the rest of my life watching videos on youtube. But I'm not picking fights with ppl and raging all the time either. It's a trade off that is the best option for me at the moment.

This sounds exactly like my situation, and I just started taking seroquel 2 days ago. I am, generally, a very well liked person! I am bubbly and kind, a classical/theatrical clarinetist, and not to toot my own horn, but I'm pretty damn funny!
And then there's the bipolar. Sometimes waking up just 5 minutes late will send me into a vicious cycle of rage that lasts up to 30 hours at a time. It has gotten so bad that I've run off into the forest at night, by myself, with a bottle full of antipsychotics. My mood stabilization abilities are/were next to none, and it was ruining my life.
I am so desperately hoping that seroquel is going to help me, but so far it has made me insanely tired, depressed, and basically void of any interest towards anything. I am starting to feel like mental illness is inescapable, at least for me..
If I am unmedicated, I turn into a horrendous steamroller of rage and violence (I am a small, 21 yr old woman, its terrible), if I am medicated, I feel like crap, sleep all day, and don't really care about anything, and if I am being switched between meds, my body feels sick and weak and my mind is everywhere. It seems like every possible course of action is in reality, only bringing more pain and emotional turmoil, and im at my wits end. When does the suffering stop? Does it ever stop..?

I have a critical and unwittingly amusing story about the drug Seroquel.
Four years ago I made the mistake of asking my doctor for a "sleep aid" because I had developed insomnia for the first time in my life. It was rather severe and I clearly could not drift off to sleep. I was and am healthy and optimally nutritionalized with a sound diet. My doctor prescribed Seroquel at 50MG tablets. However, my system readily responds to medication and I told him this. So, he said to cut the tablet in half and try taking 25MG before bedtime instead. I did this, and sure enough awoke about 8 hours later in exactly the same position in which the drug rendered me unconscious. To make a sordid story short, if there had been a casting call for a remake of the movie "Frankenstein", I would have gone and easily landed the title role ! I threw my stiff at the knee legs over the side of the bed and began walking, or rather lurching, to the bathroom with my arms stretched out before me in order to balance while I walked awkwardly forward. I remember making grunting sounds with my jaw half open like Karloff did in the original 1930's movie. Needless to say, I took that shit ONCE. I have since solved my insomnia problem with fine red wine.
Yes, I DO drink wine, unlike the other "monster".

I find benzos to be an extreme detriment if taken long term for anxiety. You will develop a quick tolerance, and you can find yourself abusing it by taking more than prescribed to treat anxiety. It also is hard to obtain, being a controlled substance, and I have found myself unable to obtain it, and then suffering from withdrawal. I’ve been on Seroquel for more than 2 years now (from 25mg-50mg) and one of the first things it affects is DEFINITELY your sleep. When it kicks, in a few hours after I’ve taken it, I just can’t keep myself awake. However, my main problem was anxiety and depression, and can’t really confirm if seroquel was what helped me improve in these aspects, since progress was steady. However, on days when my anxiety has been terrible, seroquel can make me feel more calm (but I don’t notice such a huge change often). Honestly, I feel like working with a psychologist and a psychiatrist was what made the biggest difference for me, however, maybe I’m just not able to recognize how much seroquel has actually helped bc of how long I’ve been on it. Anyway, one last thing, if I forget to take it at night I literally WONT SLEEP AT ALL. Just thought I should mention that (remember this is all from personal experience and I’m not an expert in any way. I could be drawing false conclusions)

I have heard of this helping some people. I went to the doctor some fifteen years ago for anxiety and depression. The doctor said I was depressed. Started Seroquel and she had me up to 600 mg per day. I weighed 165 pounds. I gained eighty pounds. Always hungry and bloated. Sleeping days away ( lithium will make you sleep days away) I felt like I was half asleep and a little drunk when I was awake. I didn't feel real some days. One year I took Seroquel until I said I want a new doctor. They called her the Seroquel queen and I feel that big pharma was paying her to prescribe Seroquel.

I’m glad to see more info on seroquel. It helps me and others I know with schizophrenia.
This stuff sucks though, not ever worth recreation. It makes you feel overwhelmingly sedated and sick, even the next day. Causes dependence to be able to sleep. Can cause muscle and joint pain. Very fast weight gain. There’s a reason why people stop using this stuff.
For recreation, I’ve heard mostly that people take the dose and force themselves to stay awake. They say it induces hallucinations, which are most likely just hypnogogic.
I can’t speak for it, but I don’t think this can end or reduce the effects of hallucinogens. It has to build up before it causes anything other than sedation. It probably only dampens trips for people who’ve already been taking it regularly.

Akathisia, mania or sleepiness can be caused hours after the first dose, I've seen it happen and I've had it happen to myself. The brain is a very delicate organ, and these drugs are like a pressure washer.

This was given to me for anxiety, depression and insomnia. It elevated my anxiety, deepend my depression and took 5 weeks on 100mg to give me 4 hours sleep max, now I'm getting 2 hours max and have so many horrible side-effects.. I put on a kilo and my cholesterol shot up to 7 in just one month( and that was on 75mg,) I have insane carbohydrate craving after taking my bedtime 100mg and cannot settle until that craving is satisfied so I'm in the kitchen like a tunnel -visioned zombie at night scavenging.( when nothing else is available I have even resorted to eating dog biscuits 🐶
.no control ...then there's blurred vision, headaches, dry mouth , restless legs, palpitations , extreme daytime fatigue and brainfog, peripheral neuropathy, the list goes on
.desparate to get off it, I told my doctor who wanted to switch me without cross-taper to olanzapine and sertraline.
Did my research on these and said Hell no.. why would I want more torture?
Also offered ablify and one of its major side-effects is anxiety ffs!! I research everything they push at me now and they all bring unpleasant effects as have all the many psych meds I've tried in the past.- no help, just horrible side-effects
And these were totally ignored or glossed over by doctor when I complained.
I asked to be tapered off seroquel and the doctor put me on a 25mg taper a week which is crazy fast
I am tapering by 12.5mg now every 3 weeks and already suffering constant temperature changes and sweats, feeling of insects crawling allover my skin, worse insomnia than I started with and chronic diarrhoea. Anxiety getting steadily worse too.. I'm dreading comming off it completely for the insomnia and anxiety but it's given me so much trouble I just want to be free of it..
This drug seriously f***s with your whole system. I've heard of so many on it longterm and suffering big health issues because of it, yet unable to get off because the withdrawals are pure hell
Please do as much research as possible and think long and hard before taking this heavy duty med.
Doctors love to push this drug amongst others for all types of things it wasn't developed for and they either know or care little about the myriad of side-effects and the withdrawals, because they never give warning of these ( particularly the withdrawals)
The information leaflet mentions some of the common side-effects but doesn't address the withdrawal trouble or the many health problems that high dose and/or prolonged use causes.

I've suffered from Borderline for most of my life and have self-medicated with recreational drugs and prescriptions (over 61 different drugs, ranging from anti-psych to recreational drugs). I have found anti-psychs, SSRIs, SNRIs, and most anti-depressants (besides welbutrin) to only be troubling. They either/and alter my personality in a negative way or make me too tired and depressed to do anything. I find mood-stabilizers like lithium and lamictal (w/ lyrica) to be most effective for Borderline. They have a clean head effect with little reduction in normal emotion range and ability to function. Seroquel isn't ideal for me and only made me tired, hungry, and emotionally flat. Of course, this is by no means universal. But, I do feel that a troubling amount of people simply take what they're prescribed and forget to compare the before and after effects of the drug on personality with long term maintenance use. I found Zyprexa to be very similar in negative effect.

High study dropout rates are not characteristic of drug studies in general. The higher rates of study dropout with antipsychotics reflect rejection of the adverse effects. Instead of considering dropout as data (surveying subjects why they drop out), the data are set aside or dubiously extrapolated. If you've ever taken a so-called therapeutic dose of an antipsychotic, you will understand why so many people drop out of these studies.

Geary Hinolan I take seroquel XR for bipolar disorder, 400mg (started at 200mg initially). It’s primary indication is as a mood stabilizer, but it works very well at putting me to sleep at night and keeping me asleep for a full 7-8 hours. I take it around 9pm and will feel a heavy, natural sleepiness about 1-2 hours later.
Pro: you will be able to more-or-less choose when you want to fall asleep at night by taking the medication 1-2 hours prior that time.
Con: if like me, you’ll become dependent on the medication to allow you to sleep. Though not necessarily a bad thing, it does mean that once you’re on a stable bedtime dose, falling asleep at night without seroquel will become just about impossible, as you might get tired, but never “sleepy”. It essentially kicks off your natural sleep cycle.
