Don’t be so hard on yourselves! This was a great video!! I raise cattle with my Granddad about 45 years ago and would love to have cattle again! My Granddad would have loved your channel! You explain things in a way even a city-boy could understand!! Keep ranching, we can’t get enough!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I helped an older farmer after he’d had surgery grind feed for his fat cattle. We ground ear corn through a grinder mixer with a large screen. I don’t remember if we put any additives with the corn but I do know his cattle would always grade between choice and prime. I had first hand knowledge of this because I butchered them at my regular job. We also bought live animals from him to have inspected for resale by the half or quarter.
@bar7ranch Good video with some good explanations. My two cents is this, as a guy with an BS in Agriculture in animal nutrition from Okstate, I'd tell I think you're missing the mark a bit, by using whole kernel corn in lieu of cracked corn to your steers, in the form of feed efficiency. The steers are NOT easily chewing up all the whole kernels, they may swallow them, but they may pass a pretty high % of it back out as whole kernels. I'd suggest you find some bagged or bulk cracked corn, for your ration is probably less than 10% crude protein, I am guessing your ration is less than the 9% you mention, and feedlot cattle need 11-12% CP to gain as they should starting at 700lbs. Not sure I wouldn't add some sorghum as well to encourage them to eat more, silage and even cracked corn is bland and adding 2% sorghum to your ration will entice them to eat more which means gain better. My point is, buying cracked corn in lieu of whole kernels, you will improve your ADG efficiency. Let's assume they are gaining around 4lbs/day now with the 34lbs per head they are getting, they may gain the same or probably closer to 5lbs/day on less feed, lets say 25-30lbs of feed/head/day they will digest cracked easier adding more pounds. Either way, the feed additive would still be recommended as it also helps with digestion and keeping them healthy. Lastly, as they show some finish, I would up the silage in the ration as they get closer to finish weight, to have less scour and help improve gains. As you are well aware, feed costs are the highest expense in any feedlot operation, which is why selecting the right cattle and feed rations to maximize feed efficiency and costs has so much emphasis on it. At a minimum, when you start feeding steers after this group, You might try to feed each group differently, one with the current ration and one with cracked corn and see how they compare from an ADG and feed efficiency ratio. Keep on Ranching.
perfect timing. Starting to wean a group of Hereford Heifers here and you answered some of my questions. We've been successfully weaning and raising heifers for years but I'm always up for learning how others do things!
Thank you for putting these videos out. It is so important to explain this information to the public. I ranch in Montana and its amazing the miss information that is out there about cattle feeding and what people believe goes on at a feedlot or ranch. Keep up the great videos not only for us other ranchers but to inform the rest of the world. Thanks again. Keep Ranchin.
I used to Dairy, and I have finished beef for 4H projects (mine and my kids) as well as for private sale as beef. We always ground the corn, 1/4" screen for shelled corn and 1/2" for ear corn, the latter was ground through a 3/8" screen after my kids started in 4H. We had gains that averaged 4#/day, 180 days with ear corn as the primary ingredient, distillers for both P and Energy (11.5% and 4%, respectively, final mix) and used rumensin and Ralgro at start and 90 days later. We didn't feed ANY hay, the cob was enough fiber. Now, the Dairy Nutritionist's are wanting finer ground corn. I'm surprised that you are using whole corn, but if it works for you, 👍!
This is absolutely the most information video on feeding y'all have made. Opinions are well we all can assume the rest of it but trial and error is the best for what you are looking for in the finished product based on location.
Thanks! In hindsight we should have developed an outline to keep things in order but hopefully we got most of the most asked questions answered in here!
@@Bar7Ranch maybe after the fact might help or preview of products and mixture ratios. Everyone has different availability of products and results but Cody is just like myself. I bounce from what works versus what hasn't in the past.
Really liked the video. I had no idea how different feeds give different outcomes to the cattle. It was very interesting and educational to know. Thank you. ❤❤
I used to always wear slip on ariat or red wing square toe boots but my job requires tie up boots so I bought the moc toe ariats like Cody’s boots and they have become my favorite pair of boots the most comfortable sole and I can wear shorts with them in this summer heat, it’s a win win!!
What brand of TMR mixer did you get? Is that a Vermeer? What horsepower do you need to run it? And does it take a 4 x 5 or will it take a 5 x 6 bale? Also, please include the dealer you got it from thank you! I’m currently running 10 head feedlot down here on the Tx gulf coast but want to increase it and get larger, I need to go to the next level, thank you for your input!! Chris
Corn finished beef is a high quality product. They are discovering over time, that the warnings about red meat just aren’t true. But man, if you can get the genetics on the ranch, of a smaller framed animal that will fatten up beautifully on well managed pasture, my Lord, it’s such a cost savings. It brings quite a bit more, you just have to find the market. Most grass fed beef is imported. It’s not that good either, but it has all the potential if you know what you’re doing. It’s definitely not just turning them out to pasture. Thats a good lot though. I have no beef with corn fed finishing. Pun intended. It takes a lot of rain, or irrigation to do grass fed beef.
How do you contrast the economics of what you are doing verse leaving them on pasture and at the appropriate time sending them to a feed lot to finish out? Thanks Excellent video!
Sure wished you lived closer to Nebraska. Been looking for a finisher to buy from that doesn't use glutton to finish. Corn and hay make a heck of a lot better tasting steer. Used to raise cattle and hogs for years and we did it the old fashioned way and sure miss eating a good product. Now a days it's cheaper to feed glutton and other things and I sure don't like the taste of it. Keep up the good work.
Is there a way I could get ahold of yall privately? I have some questions for something I’m planning in my area, I would like to get Cody’s advice on something specific, thanks and as always I truly love y’all’s videos.
I watched you pick up your beef and I noticed your Ribeyes looked Prime and extra large. I think the Beef straight is doing the job. I watch a lot of the grass fed experts say no grain but we cook steaks at least once a week and we tried the grass fed and we didn’t like it. I didn’t taste right. We even tried several different brands with the same results. If I was closer to you guys I would try to buy beef from you. Your beef looks better than all the other channels on watch.
@@Bar7Ranch my family does not and it didn’t taste right. We marinated it and cooked over charcoal like always. My Wife said she could taste grass in it. It’s funny because my Grown Children love Venison but not the grass fed cattle. They are all grass fed too some extent. Grain just makes beef better.
I have a question…. Are you putting out feed for the cattle to last for days or just what they can/should consume in a day. From a video it seemed like you were dumping feed in the feedlots and letting them go until it was empty/needed replenished. Just curious
If I'm understanding correctly @ 150 days ( assuming 80lb bales and 2lbs per day) you only need about 4 bales per head for the full 150 days ? Also how are you measuring out your 2 lbs of hay per head when hand feeding, just a small flake per head ? Thanks
I now that you’re feeding your steers this ration but would it be okay to feed my cattle (cows and heifers) out on the pasture this same ration? I’m looking for a ration that I can feed them possibly during the summer but especially during the winter so I don’t have to just feed round bales.
How much is that giant mixer? I have a small herd and have one steer we’re going to start feeding out in October to slaughter in the spring but I can’t justify buying something like that. Could I feed whole corn, Sudan or coastal, and the beef additive without using the mixer? anywhere local sell a mixed ration like you use in the area? I'm in Salado, TX.
Hey guys, we love watching your videos, very informative, but how do you feel about brewers grain as a supplement, I’m able to buy it delivered to me for 100/ton, is there any way I can use that in the ration at all? Thank you!
My partner being a celiac (allergic to gluten from things like wheat, oats, rye, barley, plus other seeds and grains) We had to finish our small herd (5) on other substitutes. They were 100% grass and lucerne hay grown. If offloading the customers should know what was fed to raise and finish. Otherwise like us it could be her last meal even though we always have an epipen at arm’s reach ☠️⚰️🪦 Edit… right after I wrote this you said this is video about your feeding

I agree with you , straight shelled corn will never have the gain as ground eared corn. Have to feed fiber to keep the rumen healthy.
