Guys I appreciate this content. Very interesting. Been around cattle here and there but never raised one, figured the gain/loss through feeding, different types of feeding etc. Great experience for Clancey and hopefully this makes him a successful rancher someday.

What was your ADG on the steers on the creep feeder? I would really like to know because for many producers, this is much more manageable than hand feeding every day. Thanks in advance.

I can remember back in the 70s when they would bring big truck loads of supposedly 50/50 steers in to put on winter wheat. You know we would have to work all of them. There were no 50/50 steers lol. More like 80/20 lol. That's 80% bull calves. It didn't make any difference when we worked them you can bet it's going to be cold and rainy.

I have a steer that will be 12 months in February. I want to feed him straight corn and beef trate to finish him out. How much do you start them on. I think you will say depending on his weight but how much per pound can you give him and not over feed him to get him started.

It’s interesting to see the differences between the steers that were hand fed vs. not , thanks for explaining the calculations as you go!

What Cody said in the opening :35 second intro, reminds me so much of my parents.
When they got married, they had nothing.
They both worked town jobs...Mom, for the local bank. Dad, working construction as a Master electrician.
But Mom had grown up on a farm, and they both wanted to become cattle farmers.
They scrimped and saved... and made investments... for the first decade of their marriage.
Finally, in 1970, they had enough to afford to buy 80 acres from my maternal grandparents. (And lease another 200 acres from my grandparents.)
On that initial 80 acres, they had a general contractor build a house that my dad designed. Dad also did all of the electrical and plumbing work in the house, to save money.
Two years later, my folks had enough to buy their first group of cattle.
For the next 40 years, my parents raised cattle; bought more pasture, and farm ground; working hard 7 days a week, most of the year, at their town jobs and at raising cattle and farming.
To outsiders, it looked like they were "living high on the hog".
But those outsiders never realized how hard my folks worked, and how many hours of work went into my folks having what they had.
And my parents continued to invest.

Great video, as a cattle producer myself, when we were raising and showing Purebred hereford bulls and a variety of commercial and show steers, we tried the whole corn, then a cracked corn feed to get the calves to gain and found if we did a higher protein cracked corn silage, the gain efficiency went up quite a bit, in the lower 4.2lb to 4.5lb range. Competition at the bunk helped them eat more as well, especially the show steers. LIke your findings, the calves we would let eat at the "creep" or bulk feeder just didnt gain as well as the hand-fed ones.
Love the content you create and how these videos educate those who think the grocery store is the sole source of the food they may consume.
