I just read a book on the Hunley that said that the sub rammed the Housatonic with a contact mine not a barbed hook as once thought.

The NUMA led by Clive Cussler found the Hunley not Dr. Spencer. It's well documented and the lawsuit proved nothing of Spencer's claim. Besides it would have been virtually impossible to find it with the technology of 1970.

    What caused the final sinking?
    Too near the blast?
Was this determined after the wreck was raised?

alex jervis the latest is they believe they dived to the bottom to wait for the tide to change to head back in but ran out of air and died. They say that nothing in the sub showed any signs of them trying to surface: and all body’s were recovered where they would have worked.

The latest was the shock wave popped the Hunley's crew lungs. I don't see how they singled the shore, while dead. I still favor a musket ball through a port hole in the forward conning tower.

@@jkoeberlein1 doubtful, a explosion that powerful would have destroyed the sub right next to the Housatonic.

@@jkoeberlein1 the crew were all seated at their stations and Dixon at the helm was sat with his legs crossed. No attempts had been made to escape or empty the bilge, and a shot from a musket would take a few minutes to sink the Hunley.
They were 16 feet away from a blast that caused a secondary effect transmitted through the water into the Hunley’s hull

@@jkoeberlein1 and we can’t take the blue light signal as evidence seeing as accounts from sailors aboard the Hoosatonic vary massively

The Hunley was raised Aug 8th 2000 not in 2002.

What about the Cadet Battery from The Citadel that fired upon the Star of the West on 9 Jan 1861 from Morris Island??????

Very interesting. Germans learnt a lot from American technology. But how did they? Must have been schematics or blue prints. BTW 70’s intro music was hot🔥
