We own a 11 Ford Ranger XLT super cab 4WD pickup with a 4.0L V6 and a 5spd automatic transmission. It has 3.55 gears in the rear differential. I was getting 19mpg with the cruise control set on 75mph. After adding a K&N intake and a 3” FlowMaster exhaust, I now get 23mpg. The truck is mainly used for work around our property and has only 36K miles.
Some years ago, I tried using Lucas Oil Fuel Treatment to my old Ford Ranger, and tested it by adding it on a full tank one week, then excluding it on the tank fill up. I keep a log of the mileage on every fill up with and without Lucas Oil. After multiple tests, I discovered that I would increase 50 EXTRA MILES when I added Lucas Oil to a full tank of my '95 Ford Ranger!
I believe this. I use this same stuff in my 05 Accord. I commute 180 miles daily for work, practically all highway miles (less that 10 miles off highway.) When I first use the Lucas, I've pushed close to 500 miles on one tank. What sucks is it only does that for that first tank.
Same experience with me on my 2018 Santa Fe. For some unknown reason it seems to stay working in my car for 2-4 fill ups. When freeway driving the computer is telling me I’m averaging 29-35 mpg, instead of 22-23 mpg without the Lucas additive. I’m not sure if it is connected to the weather conditions in Arizona or not. I really don’t understand why this stuff works.
IMO Best way to increase you mpg is the free way! Just mind your driving. Accelerate slower, accelerate going into a hill, not when you already slowing down while going up. Try to cruise at a speed that allows your car to be at lower rpms. (2k around 55-60mph in my case depending on highway speed limits) Ya might make a few speed demons mad, but taking it easy will get a good thank you from your car too!
I'm actually giving that xcap test run myself in Phoenix to see if it's legit. Started a few days ago and so far it seems promising but I only burned and 1/8 of a tank. I'm usually doing 400 miles give or take to the tank but between miles empty and my trip i got 450 projected when I go to my next fill up.
@@donmohave so far it seems legit between the trip miles and miles to empty it's projecting 467 miles. That's about 18% gain and that driving on both highway and city driving and I only burned only an 1/4 so far.
Sugar in the gas tank reduces fuel burn too. Did on my principals car in 8th grade. Same year I learned how to clean the entire fuel system on a Ford Bronco. And paint a house, and plant trees & a lawn.😶
Most gas savings devices also come with a booklet with driving tips to help maximize your gas mileage. The gain you see is not from the device. It’s from better driving practices. Like slow and steady acceleration. Like letting off the gas earlier and coasting to a stop.
Scotty. I'm not a mechanic (yet), but I am a tecnical guy. I followed your other channels for for simple help on a budget. I changing a simple wiper blade fix to drastically reduce wind noise and turned my car into a luxury vehicle. Dumb question: can Akibono brakes save on gas mileage? Is it as simple as wiper blade changes? I now have a Motorcycle.
Riding a bicycle will give you 600+ mpg! I know, as I tried it for a year, got into GREAT shape, saved enough in insurance alone to pay for the bicycle, and probably cost me all of about $50 more in food the entire year. The gas savings for the first three months paid for all my gear, including shoes, short bibs, long bibs, rain legs, helmet, gloves, jacket...
Remember some of the cars in the 70s Where they converted them over to run on propane leaving the inside of your engine cleaner and also your oil and lasting longer in the crankcase check that out.
Those ford escapes from 2005-2015 have a transmission band that commonly breaks And make’s transmission fail… YOU DONT NEED TO OVERHAUL them… There’s a wall on the drivers side wheel area pull the plastic wheel well out and there’s a port door on the side of the transmission wall..drop the transmission down towards ground slightly and open the port wall on the transmission the metal drive belt is in there… It pops out and u pop the new belt in and put all back together and the thing is Alive and shifting like new again..

Scotty, the thing about mothballs comes from drag racing. Back in the day (40s/50s/60s???) mothballs had nitromethane/methanol as active ingredient, which is toxic to moths and humans, but is also basically what top fuel dragsters and funny cars ran on. Of course stuffing mothballs into a gas tank will work about as well as stuffing gas tank with sulfur match heads - do not try this at home/expect something bad to happen.
Gee, I thought that top fuel was blended with oxygenated nitrate, tetraethyl lead and some nitro. Nitro? You know, the stuff thats in two stroke rc cars. 10%, 15%. Mothballs? Nope.
I totally disagree on best gas mileage when a vehicle is new. I have a Volvo XC60-T6 which is rated at 23 mpg highway. Initially I got around 25 during the summer and over the years it improved and at 70 mph on the highway with the cruise control on I get over 29 mpg. If driving at 55 mph I get 32 mpg which is significantly better than when new.
The BEST way to increase gas mileage, SLOW DOWN. Hwy speed limit is 65, 70 . you don't have to go 80 and up. Florida, actually every State I have driven in, lots of crazy drivers going excessive speeds and tailgating.
Scotty is a northerner who transplanted to Tennessee. He reminds me of a fellow paratrooper stationed with me in the early 70's from Wisconsin, but that can't be. I started mechanic school in '72 not in '68 while at Fort Bragg, at the ROTC Sumner Camp under Col. Pruitt and Col Shepard under the guidance of SMaj A. Denny Scott, known as Scotty the Paratrooper.
Scotty came back with an option for me to leave my car for 2 weeks. I respect him and appreciate the offer but I can’t go without the car that long. Hope there is another way to get an analysis from Scotty.
Change the thermostat. Yes indeed. Just did it. 20O8 Dodge Caravan. About $25. Took me about an hour from the time I finished my breakfast until I was test driving it. Had to find my tools😀. Love your show!
His solution to the windows rolling down makes sense. The honk locking noise annoys me, so I started just locking it from the inside and it just feels normal idk y I ever used the stupid remote. I never worry if I locked the car, I pushed the button - I know it's locked. I only use the remote to unlock and the rare time for valet mode.
Car manufacturers spend millions to gain an extra 1mpg. The competition makes it necessary. If an air filter, or a silly magnet, or some weird fan thing in the intake, or a pill, worked, believe me they would use it.
Scotty. Want your opinion on this one. What do you think about adding specifically TC-W3 ashless 2 cycle oil to your vehicle to act as an upper cylinder lubricant at the ratio of roughly 500:1 or 640:1 or roughly one ounce per every five gallons of gasoline on fill up. I've heard this method thrown around many motorist forums with positive results increasing gas mileage 1-2mpgs, mildly decarboning your piston crowns and no long term detrimental effects to the catalytic converter. I attempted it on my 2009 Lexus RX 350 for a year without any fouled plugs or check engine lights and did see a small bump in mpg's. I was not using top tier gas back then. But have been using exclusively Shell gas and SOPUS products for the last year. They have good additive packs in their oils. Especially Quaker State and Pennsoil Ultra Platinum, and good detergents in their gas. Sometimes I do BP or Sunoco if the price is right also.
I tried these XCAPs myself. On my 2001 Rx I went from 15.6 to 17.1 a 1.5 MPG improvement on a 19.8 gallon Netting an extra 24 miles. At $ 4 bucks a gallon that around a 1.5 gal savings or about $ 7.50 cent savings and they cost me about $2.50 on-line. Doing it soon the second time. So, I like them.Other stuff at the big auto stores didn’t work for me.
Thanks again, Scotty but 2035 on the current course I would be surprise if we get to 2030. I love your mechanical teachings and have learn a lot from you. Thank you, and take care now
3:05 2012 Toyota Camry v6 back 3 spark plugs hard to reach. must remove intake plenum to access. most v6 injector now. Huge asspain. use iridium plugs. Will last 200,000 miles
Scotty, you might have missed your calling as an orchestra conductor. Kinda like those things in front of car dealerships that are flailing their arms everywhere.
When I purchased my 2016 Toyota Tacoma it was getting 485-530 kms/tank. That's bad fuel economy but that's what you are getting out of them from factory. I talked to so many Taco owners and they as well are getting the same mileage!! I could not accept that so after some tweaking and minor mods immediately was getting almost 700km/tank and still am to this day !!! I can prove it I even took it to my local dealership and they were surprised> I took my truck in for a custom tune to get better shifting and response and the tech guy had never in all the years of tuning the Taco's has never seen mileage like mine !!!
Easy gains way - bang the car into neutral on a nice flat stretch of road doing a steady speed & see how your car rolls. If it starts to slow rapidly, chances are the brakes are dragging/bearings bad/tyres soft, blah blah - you want it rolling smooth & easy. Smooth & easy means your engine isn't fighting excess drag. Sort that first, go from there.
I am sure I'll regret posting this amongst all of these car fans... but my 2002 VW Jetta GLI with the 24 valve VR6 200HP 6-speed manual has easily accessible spark plugs. Which is great because the ignition coils on these engines need to be replaced about every 60,000 to 100,000 kilometers as they get too hot and break in half. So you need good slim, long nosed forceps to get right into the spark plug chamber and pull out the broken half that is still stuck onto your spark plug. Pain in the butt, but easily done in less than 10 minutes if you have the right tools.
Greetings Scotty, You are obviously knowledgeable about cars, and gasoline. So, I have a question. I bought a new Rav4 hybrid in 2022 and always put regular gas in it. When I filled up the tank, for a year and longer, I got 565 to 575 miles to a fillup, no problem. Then I started noticing the gas pump would stop before the tank was full, which it has been doing ever since. I have to keep pressing the pump several times, after it stops the pump, to fill it up. In addition, when I fill the tank, I am only getting 500 or maybe as much as 525 miles to the full tank. Is this because it used to be a new car, or has the gasoline become less efficient in some way?. I am not doing anything differently when I get gasoline versus when the car was new. Thank you for your insights.
Some guy did a video recently charging his Hummer EV and it cost him $20 for 60 miles of charge. Just for reference, it costs me $13 to drive that 60 miles and I have a ford f150 15.5mpg avg. As far as I know it's a scam, hybrid technology looks far more promising if they'd ever put the money there
Scotty, watched you for years. Kudos. What do you think of BG 44K® Platinum fuel system cleaner. I have a 2007 Civic just now turned 90K miles. I put one can in in the spring and just now put another one in because I was sitting at a stop light and noticed that I was idling around 500RPM. It didn't smooth out until around 650RPM. COSTCO gasoline whereas for the first 14 yrs only Shell. But I had read somewhere that BG 44K was the best on the market. Yes? No? Waste of money?
It's not impossible to change those plugs I got a 2000 v6 camry and got to them by removing the pcv hose on the passenger side of the engine. not a easy job but a lot of patience helps. did it in 2 days. extentions and rubber hose to feed the spark plugs in the motor to get them started then extentions after that on my socket wrench.
I had a 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser sealed transmission couldn’t service it. It went 295,000 miles before it went by that time I wasn’t putting any money into it. Should I buy another one I have faith in Toyota what do you think?
Octane boost tablets. Never tried those but I put the liquid octane boost in my Moped and it fires a lot stronger. i guess because its not as sloppy at lower octanes. i put in 93, then a half a shot of octane boost (1.3 gal.). I notice 5 mph faster at the top end. I bet it works for motorcycles as well.
Iridium plugs never heard....always learning from you. That's why I watch. Simple and honest knowledge. Can u use them in any new car 2000 on up? And how often do u need to change them. I have a Hyundai sonata, and keep it maintained. Wonderful car, I know you don't like them...but mine is outstanding and runs like ...it is a 2009. Ok thanks

Would these Iridium plugs improve a 2021 Tundra 5.7 L gas mileage? If yes, by how much?
Scotty for President!🤠
Scotty you're a great guy and very knowledgeable love your show
My Suzuki GV appreciates your videos Scotty.
3:05 2012 Toyota Camry v6 back 3 spark plugs hard to reach. must remove intake plenum to access. most v6 injector now. Huge asspain. use iridium plugs. Will last 200,000 miles
☆☆☆☆☆ THANK YOU SCOTTY ! ! ! YOU YOUR FAMILY & FRIENDS BE SAFE ! ! ! ☆☆☆☆☆
2007 Altima 2.5 has two thermostats. Replace them both although one is not as easy to change. I replaced both of mine, radiator and both hoses.
Scotty, you might have missed your calling as an orchestra conductor. Kinda like those things in front of car dealerships that are flailing their arms everywhere.
Morass…I learned a new word today from Scotty the scholar.👏👏
Scotty, you are a national treasure!
The airports are going to have a hell of a time going over to Electric
When I purchased my 2016 Toyota Tacoma it was getting 485-530 kms/tank. That's bad fuel economy but that's what you are getting out of them from factory.
I talked to so many Taco owners and they as well are getting the same mileage!!
I could not accept that so after some tweaking and minor mods immediately was getting almost 700km/tank and still am to this day !!! I can prove it
I even took it to my local dealership and they were surprised> I took my truck in for a custom tune to get better shifting and response and the tech guy had never in all the years of tuning the Taco's has never seen mileage like mine !!!
I got much better gas mileage out of my 2009 Ford Focus by driving in the right hand lane at 60mph and using the “cruise control.”
I Discovered The Absolute Best way to Eliminate Fuel costs. A Toyota BZ4X & Say Goodbye to the fuel pumps forever.❤
At one if had installed all of JC Whitney's gas saving devices I would have actually produced gasoline.
Besides, locking the car by pushing the locking button instead with the fob prevents any crook from reading your code and stealing your vehicle.
Thank you so much for sharing these amazing tips!
Does top tier fuel clean better?
If you close your eyes when watching Scotty Kilmer videos (and I watch a lot!), you would think it was Joe Pesci talking!! 😁
Stopped at Harbor Freight picked up a can of WD 40 Silicone and applied it to the areas around my window. *It Works*
My fuel costs dropped dramatically after buying a siphon hose
Yep, I read somewhere that if you drive backwards you can actually get into negative mpg territory
Interesting, I've always heard vehicles can get better mileage after engine is "broke in" 🤔
I am sure I'll regret posting this amongst all of these car fans... but my 2002 VW Jetta GLI with the 24 valve VR6 200HP 6-speed manual has easily accessible spark plugs. Which is great because the ignition coils on these engines need to be replaced about every 60,000 to 100,000 kilometers as they get too hot and break in half. So you need good slim, long nosed forceps to get right into the spark plug chamber and pull out the broken half that is still stuck onto your spark plug. Pain in the butt, but easily done in less than 10 minutes if you have the right tools.
thanks scotty!
This dudes like Ricky Bobby
Don’t know what to do with his hands while being interviewed…

Greetings Scotty, You are obviously knowledgeable about cars, and gasoline. So, I have a question.
I bought a new Rav4 hybrid in 2022 and always put regular gas in it. When I filled up the tank,
for a year and longer, I got 565 to 575 miles to a fillup, no problem.
Buy Seafoam to help keep your engine fuel system clean 😊
" Seafoam " is overpriced diesel fuel . Diesel costs a feaction of that !
i believe you mist your calling , you should be a orchestra conductor . Just a retired Mercedes tech, 45 year career enjoying your video !
Some guy did a video recently charging his Hummer EV and it cost him $20 for 60 miles of charge. Just for reference, it costs me $13 to drive that 60 miles and I have a ford f150 15.5mpg avg. As far as I know it's a scam, hybrid technology looks far more promising if they'd ever put the money there
I would remember STP gas and oil additives. Were they any good?
Good information!!
It's not impossible to change those plugs I got a 2000 v6 camry and got to them by removing the pcv hose on the passenger side of the engine. not a easy job but a lot of patience helps. did it in 2 days. extentions and rubber hose to feed the spark plugs in the motor to get them started then extentions after that on my socket wrench.
what a guy
Yes and most are designed to get bad molage@ But you can modify vehicle to get better mpg. Prove to me it can't be done!
you should do a video on what to look for and how "not" to mod scooters to make them faster 07 metropolitan not to be too specific
Scotty, how do you feel about the product called “Heet” formulated to remove any water in gasoline fuel lines?
Mix-I-Go was a big scam about 50 years ago. It never helped at all and was very expensive.
what WILL improve gas mileage is a throttle controller... helps keep you from being a lead foot.
Many years ago moth balls were known to increase the octane of the gasoline. but that was back when leaded gasoline was still available.
PT Barnum never said that. It was beaten into our head he did tho. Heard that since grade school.
Thank you Scotty
Gas Saver Pro which plugs in the OBD port does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING - IT IS A SCAM. Let the buyer beware.
What do you think about gasoline fumes! Running the car with!
When you get 2mpg, it's pretty easy to double. Not so much with 35mpg
That was my thoughts exactly.
For those who want to sabe gas ⛽ don't worry fill the gas tank put in the trunk don't hook to car you will be able to get a good deal on the gas .
Ok thanks
They definitely make a difference. I also use them in my motorcycles. Smoothing the ignition is what I like about em.
