I first saw the m50 in action in one of your vids, after using a GoPro 5 for so long I switched to the m50 for vlogging and I honestly love it. I also changed lenses on it and I’m excited to see what the video quality will look like. Nice to see it still rates highly.
I own one and use it for my UA-cam videos as well. I've owned plenty of cameras and still feel this is the best value for creating UA-cam content. It's just so easy to use. It has all the features you need without a ton of other bells and whistles to bog you down. It is also what I use when I travel or go on a family outing. My biggest dislikes are battery life, limited recording and lack of weather sealing. If it had those, I wouldn't need my sony a6400 which I own the sigma 16mm f1.4 for. Anyways, great video!
Nice vid, thanks. I appreciate that you invested £400 in an EF-M 16mm f1.4 and it clearly works for you. However, I'm a little surprised you've mentioned the straight EF adapter but not the speedbooster, which is available and, frankly, hugely popular. For those of us who were playing with T3i's last year and went to the M50, the fact that we could keep and even improve on EF performance was an absolute gamechanger. We came into the market already with our lower light lenses, such as my Sigma 28mm f1.8 (which becomes f1.2). I bought my M50 without the 15-45 kit lens, but after seeing how much it was used I ordered a 2nd hand one from ebay for £42 inc postage. Now it's my favourite and main out and about.
I love the fact that you went through the whole video without addressing the fact that the XT-3 looks like you’ve been using it to film a mud wrestling tournament 🤣
Love my m50. It’s my go-to travel camera due to the size. I do take my EOS R the odd time (with the RF35 1.8 lens), but the 50 is so tiny. Fits in the palm of my hand, shoots great photos and video, and is reliable like any Canon. Plus, I can find batteries and accessories in remote cities and towns if I need them.
Herman Thind i love my my m50 but thinking of upgrading to the eos rp. I just wonder if it’s worth it actually and if the dynamic range is that much better.
mickepitzon I would recommend the R as a step up. The RP is a big step up in dynamic range and low light, and is on sale everywhere now. Lots of good used ones out there too.
Owned the M-50 and was very happy with it.....However I now have the Fuji X-A7 as my blogging camera. Purchased for £350 it is simply brilliant plus of course you have so many lens options.
I'm buying my first big boy camera this week. ( I currently vlog with a DJI Osmo Action & GoPro Hero5) but I'm getting the Canon M50 and can't wait to start taking real photos along with my vlogs. Just subscribed..
What's great with the X-T4 is you will have just two mounts - and it does stills so you have a lot of flexibility. But what I appreciate in this video is the thoughtfulness - what's right, when, and why - for you. Thanks!
I had this canon m50 for a week and I am so impressed with video and photo quality can’t wait to get the sigma 16 I shoot this for photography and for videography which Bi I started doing videography since quarantine started I guess it helped me to start a new hobby. Great video by the way
I just got a canon m50 and Sigma 16mm f1.4, fantastic setup. This along with my Mavic 2 Pro and I'm getting epic video this week along the Oregon Coast. Thanks for reaffirming my choice.
Yes, I watched the entire video, just because I'm glad we're using the same camera. After I upgraded to a full frame camera I thought I'd sell the M50, but it's still the most convenient camera to use for making UA-cam videos when I want a quick turn-around time. Some of Canon's native EF-M lenses are real gems: the EF-M 11-22mm IS, the 22mm f/2.0 and the 32mm f/1.4 are the ones I go for 99% of the time. They are especially convenient when travelling.
I'm so happy to have come across your video. I know absolutely nothing about photography but recently bought an M50 for vlogging and have a Sigma 16mm f1.4 lens on the way. Really looking forward to getting the lens after this
The EF-M 22mm f2 lens is 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Super sharp wide open, barely any distortion. I switched to Fuji but kept my original M Body solely because of how good the 22mm is.
Love that you shoot outdoors and go to the mountains! I'm looking for a small camera to make a decent hiking film of the GR11 in Spain, lense choice will be crucial and this has really helped! Thanks mate!
I've been using Sigma 30mm f1.4 ART lens with viltrox speed booster (wide open f1. 0) since the M50 came out... And yes, this combo has no vignetting even tho the lens is made for aps-c. The ultimate lens for the M50 if you ask me.
just bought this lens, waiting for it to arrive through amazon. I'm so excited to really do some proper vlogging with this camera. I have the 22mm prime, but still not great for getting the wide shots and nearly impossible to record myself talking to the camera. Everything I've heard about the 16mm is fantastic!
That little Samyang 12mm f/2 lens is a cracking lens, very underrated. Had one with my Canon M3 full spectrum modded camera and never used anything else. especially with the 67mm filter thread size makes it easy for options in filters to use. keep up the great work Thomas :)
Despite your messy hair, this video was a real pleasure to watch with great useful and relevant information. I know what you mean about the 4k on the M50 the crop is ridiculous and it does not have the good autofocus, but the 1080p is a completely different story, the autofocus is soooo good. Until you actually got round to mentioning the XT-4 I was almost jumping off my seat trying to tell you about the XT-4 (like you wouldn't know if I know :) :) :)) but yes you are spot on, the XT-4 looks like it has all the missing features of the XT-3, the only small gripe (and it is small) but I would have liked to have seen a new processor and even a slight improvement in video quality but that is really picky because the footage is already 10 bit 4:2:0 internally and it is amazing. For B-Roll only shots, have you ever considered a Pocket 4K? Honestly Tom, the video that comes out of this thing is absolutely astounding. It is totally useless for vlogging but it would be good for b-roll especially in low light or situations that require great dynamic range. It also comes with the full Davinci Resolve Studio and in the RAW tools you can recover amazing amounts of detail. I didn't mean to type this much, i'm sorry for the length of this response and no i'm not a blackmagic sales rep ha ha, i'm just a video/photo/film enthusiast.
Great information Thomas. Much appreciated. I've been using the M50 for a long time and my experience is the same as yours. I'm going to look into this lens.
I don’t vlog or film but do watch all your wonderful vids, then when you mentioned, rather sheepishly, about justifying the purchase to your wife “....just tell her it’s for work”... I cracked up! You, as prolific an artist as you are, needing to justify the purchase made me smile and laugh out loud! When I try to feed the gear hungry monster in me it’s always an adventuresome discussion between my Bride and me, even after 34 years. Please let your wife know we appreciate her support in what it is you do! Cheers!
I did not go through all of your comments, but I agree with you. It is a fantastic camera for the price. However, I use C-Log as my User Defined 1 style. It gives the ability to color grade extremely well. Great Video.
I've never felt so compelled to write a comment. First yes I agree the m50 is great. But the way you address the fact that the Canon couldn't shoot low light until "now" because of thr release of the sigma lens is quite puzzling. From day 1 you could have purchased a better lens which has has faster aperture. You could have solved this by doing a a simple search on youtube with the hundreds of videos on the m50. The kit lens is great for just point and click, but it is a kit lens at thr end of the day. The 22m native lens would have gotten you close, a speedbooster, so many ways to have solved your low light issue long ago. Again, I think you are spot on with your analysis and usability. Thanks for the video. Cheers.
Glad to see you addressed the one thing that frustrates me with anyone who films on a Fuji; the autofocus. It's outstandingly quick for stills but it just falls apart for movies. I still dont think anyone has video autofocus as good as Canon's DPAF. You need to look at the Canon R5 when it launches. That's where the money will be and it'll be insanely good enough for your stills too
I agree with you here on the M50 being a solid budget option. I have a pair of them that I've been using since mid 2018 for my video work and photos. I did pick up a used M5 a few months ago so I could get more direct physical controls when doing straight photos. It is nice that Sigma finally released their trio of DC DN lenses on EF-M. I'd like to get the 56mm at least eventually. The 16mm does look nice too, though I wish it were a bit wider. Nice video! Hopefully the X-T4 works out well for you. That does look like a great camera. I don't know if the AF is much different than the X-T3 from what I've seen, but maybe a combination of settings will make it more consistent for the type of video work we do.
Hi Thomas. Nice video. Do you think the M50 mk2 will address the M50 shortcomings e.g. DP-AF for 4K, 120fps at 1020p and sound and AF for slo-mo? Cheers Ray and Sue's travel Channel
The b-roll at 7:13. No tyre marks and I have stopped the video a few times looking for foot prints - dedication Thomas and probably un noticed by many I am guessing. Nice one.
Thanks for addressing this! Been trying to think of which camera to go for to create UA-cam content on a budget, nice to know the M50 is up to the task 👌
Amazing that your M50 has survived your adventures and continues to perform so well never thought it could be that durable. I do believe that the new XT-4 will be excellent and deliver the performance upgrades the XT-3 is lacking, but the price is high and will take a while to come down so I hope your current M50 can keep you happy for a few more months. Please return to Iceland or Norway as soon as you get your upgraded gear I know the results will be awesome and exciting to watch as you are a great natural communicator and I appreciate the efforts you make in recording the natural beauty of our world.
Yes! I was gonna say, add that Viltrox speed booster and suddenly 4k is useful, as long as you use manual focus, not to mention 1080 suddenly makes the M50 a beast with all of the lenses the Viltrox opens up for you.
I was helping a friend decide on her first slr-type camera a while back, and hadn't used any Canon since the 40D many years ago. We saw one of the M50's cheaper relatives in the 2nd hand display case, and while my friend was enthusing about it, i found myself agreeing with her a lot. They're actually pretty nice to use. I can see Canon begin to catch up to Sony this year. I can also see you moving up to the next Canon full frame mirrorless, the most interesting R5, should it prove to be much lighter than your current setup. It certainly already has some great lenses waiting for it. Going back to the Fujifilm X-T4, i've seen some video bloggers expressing great surprise at a lack of a dedicated headphone jack. I know nothing about video blogging, but thought it might be something that you needed to know. If that's not too important to you, i think you'll love it, not least for the ibis. Its sibling, the X-H2 with its superb ibis has saved me a load of weight in long hikes this past two years. I now go out with the 16-55 f2.8 and the 55-200 and a Sirui monopod and it's only the long exposures that i can't do. I CAN do 1/6 second, however, and i couldn't do that without IS.
This is my new set up since the Sigma came out with the 16mm lens for the Canon M50. The focus isn't as fast as Canon's EFM 32mm f/1.4 but the wide-angle just awesome. Canon will have their own 16mm f/1.4 someday.
I own that same sigma but use it on sony crop body. The results are amazing. Shallow depth of field for video is going into the full frame territory with this lens! Also it's very sharp for photos!
Thanks for your nice review, the way you talk and represent your work is beautiful. Just a quick note, No camera ever will tick all boxes, it's marketing strategy to sell the full line of gear, even the $ 25,000 cameras do not tick all boxes.
I've owned and M50 for a few years now and know what you mean about the flippy screen. I recently moved to fuji, and bought an X-T30, but despite the amazing colour and video, it never quite matched the M50's auto focus or had that flippy screen! The X-T4 is what i'd like too and I will sell my M50 to get one. However also consider the X-T200, it doesn't have FLog, but it has the great auto focus of the X-T30 and most of the film simulations. I feel its going to be an M50 killer, with all that lovely Fuji glass. Nice video though, the M50 truly is a great camera!
Greetings from the Pacific Northwest! Sounds like an X-T4 could very well resolve your issues with the X-T3, and you already have the lenses. I know I’m looking forward to getting my hands on one to compare with my X-T3. Absolutely love your videos! I’ve learned so much from them. Thank you so much!
lol i am so agree with you. I have used it in -20 without anyproblem. Used it while it have been raining and snowing. I am suprised how good it actually is in bad weather condition. But i do have to try that lense. That could solve my low light performance as well, thanks for the tips Heaton:)
Fantastic! Mr Heaton's becoming a camera gear UA-camr - and that with a phenomenal cracking sense of humour; like: "..it has F13 to F7,000 or something..."👍
I photograph on a budget (a very tight budget), The Canon M50 is my go to camera now for photography. I just love the little fella. I just wish I had the money to get better lenses.
It’s a wonderful camera.i couldn’t even use a simple point and shoot but always wanted to do photography and videography now I can. This camera and UA-cam taught me so much. It’s a piece of piss to use although I’m still learning. One thing that nearly killed me with shock was the prices of lenses, even second hand ones! I bypassed the M range of lenses because I see this as only the start and you can only use M lenses on M cameras so I bought a knock off adapter to get this camera to fit canons other ranges of lenses. When I Change camera I don’t wanna be stuck with M lenses I can’t use. The sound quality is shite so I got a Rode mic the one shown in the video. Lovely camera but expect to pay more for much needed accessories (buy more batteries this camera sucks power) nice video Ta very much ❤️ 📷 .
Hi Tom, could you please bring back the music from your old conclusion because it really finishes off the video nicely, keep being an inspiration to us all, thanks.
I love my canon m50 so much. I use it with james miller c-log and it helps so so so much on the dynamic range problem. Grading it is super easy. I just put a quick s curve in davinci resolve and up the saturation to 75%. I really cant wait to buy the sigma 16 though! The tokina 11-16mm with the adapter is so so heavy on this camera!
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto And it's pretty easy to download onto your camera. You just need to download the canon m50 picture profile software from Canon's website. Then hook up your camera to your computer. Then boom! Put those bad boys on there. I do turn the sharpness all the way down on the c-log profile because it looks a little too digital though.
Well done Thomas, you should to the "to camera" piece more. while your rambles and hikes are great. It's no secret that it all doesn't happen out in the country. Technology is so much part of our trade and understanding what is available is important. I'm very pleased that you are our "crash test dummy" Thanks again Tony
nice video man. Mine is in the shop for repairs atm!! lol...he tossed it over his hands and said "this is well used""...and its true...this camera can take what you throw at it, I love it. P.S its just the on/off switch thats playing up on mine. great video, thanks for sharing
I am a Canon shooter but I have to admit if I was going to invest in another system it would be Fuji. Only thing that concerns me is I am also a Adobe user and as you pointed out in another video Fuji works better with Capture One software.
it might be a good idea to hang on the M50 for a while longer. while the X-T4 has got the flipout screen and better/faster autofocus, it still seems (from early reviews at least) to not have the smooth video-centric autofocus of the Canon. the X-T4 tends to autofocus like a stills camera, where it rapidly flickers between different focal distances, as opposed to smoothly tracking its subject. maybe firmware updates (and actual production models) will fix that issue, but i'd definitely wait for in depth reviews before dropping $1700 on the X-T4 just for video.
Nice walkthrough of the cameras you use to create your videos Tom. I have similar thoughts about the potential of the X-T4 as a fantastic camera for vlogging, and b-roll. It would be great to be able to do everything with the one camera. Also have a camera that has IBIS would be great. Thanks for sharing 👍
i love my m50 iv used it for timeslapse and for filming gigs in low lighting and yes the kit lens is ace in low lightening then iv used it to film other muscians in normal lighting too then i brought it before i was 30 other year as i wanted something to replace my 700d that got damaged some times ago which i then got a replacement body for my 30th so ye love my m50 thanks
I'm not a photographer but just a normal youtuber in the block so I can't say much! M50 is in my upgrade wishlist and I believe with all that I've known so far it's maybe the best option for beginner like me. I watched a video recently about an option to fix the low light drawback by using the Canon EF-M 22mm f/2.0 STM lense. You might want to check out this lense and maybe also give your opinion in your review. Nice video though and keep crushing it Bro! 👊😎
yeah mate its an awesome lens im so glad I got it when it come out for my m50 super happy and cant wait fr m50 up date rumoured to be in sept this year fingers crossed
Nice vids BTW you can shoot slow motion with the M50 (I have one) you just need to go the menu the camera icon tab then the first tab below it and then movie rec. quality and then you want to chose high frame rate and set it to enabled and make sure your camera is set to NTSC not pal because with ntsc you have 120fps and with pal only 100fps.
Appreciate the candid reviews Tom! I’m looking at the M50 as a compact travel camera (stills) over my 80D + lenses... Recommended? I can the the XT-4 as a game changer for the industry, just about the perfect all rounder! I can also see you spying off the EOS R5 when that finally drops! Keep up the great content!
I've got the m50 with a viltrox speed booster, honestly it's such a good system as you then have a tiny full frame camera with all of the ef lenses. With the speed booster you also get an extra stop of light and wider fov
Have you ever considered Olympus cameras? I know many people (especially professionals) dislike the small sensor, but in my experience it's amazing for travel photography (especially in rougher terrain). It's build really well, there are a ton of lenses and the systems are small.
you are example in terms of nature photography, Thomas - I think you made me stay with my canon 5dmarkIV... so: what do you think of the new "R" System of canon... thanks for your wonderful stream - please stay as you are...
This is the first I've heard of that Sigma lens, wow! If you haven't tried Sigma or Tamron lens, give them a shot (pun intended.) They have great glass and relatively inexpensive vs. Native lenses.
There is a mirror for the xt3 that acts as a flip up screen in the hot shoe on top. It sounds jank but actually changed the camera completely for me acting as a flippy screen for a 15 dollar add on. Also you shout check out the new xt200. Cheap with flippy screen and good low light I think they improved autofocus as well. Really good digital image stabilization also in the xt200 also
The X-T4 will be slightly bigger and heavier than the X-T3 but otherwise may solve all your problems. I hope to see it available soon. And yeah, since I did stay for the whole thing, it's good to see you occasionally in the studio too.
Tom, get yourself an a6400. It pretty much outperforms the canon in every way and is lighter weight. It also has all the log profiles, a flip screen, 4K 24 without a crop, 1080 60&120 FPS ect. And you can get that sigma 1.4 for Sony as well.
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto there's a few simple solutions for that. they have a few brackets that move the mic off to the side and out of the way if that's the main concern. The M50 is a great camera though!
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto although I think its really beneficial to use the a6400 if you shoot sony cameras since you can share the lenses with your main camera and also grade footage with the same profiles from your main camera and vlogging camera.
I was thinking earlier that I was really missing the Sunday episodes. Lo and behold, a notification pops up. 👍👍 Has Monty been playing with that camera outside? Good grief! As someone else has asked, will we now get to see the mean comments of 2019, it's an annual obsession. Yes, the X-T4 appears to update the perceived shortfalls of the X-T3, but the X-T3 is still a beast for most peoples' needs. It is amazing that M50 has survived so long. Of course, I believe it's been to camera hospital a few times, specifically for a dangling flippy screen. Rock on!
1:33 You actually can in 720p, it's a separated option but it is available!
Thank you, someone else who acknowledges how underrated the M50 is!

I am new to the channel. This information was very helpful and exactly what I was seeking. Thanks!
Hi Thomas.
Thomas, I can’t recommend the af speed-boosters for the m50 enough, definitely worth a try.
You have a no yet existing X-H2? Impressive. :)
@@quikee9195 OOps! My finger hit the wrong key, there. It's actually an X-H3 and i'm a time traveller =P
With speedbooster and 50mm 1.8 or 28mm 1.8 you have around 55mm 1.2 and 32mm 1.2. And it is awesome with that setup. Try it
I second that. Have same setup and it is a massive improvement.
This is my new set up since the Sigma came out with the 16mm lens for the Canon M50. The focus isn't as fast as Canon's EFM 32mm f/1.4 but the wide-angle just awesome. Canon will have their own 16mm f/1.4 someday.
You are going to love the new Sony ZV1
I upgraded from the M50 to the M6 II and so happy with it. Add the little small rig adapter (adds 2 cold shoes on the side and bottom) and boom!
wow the xt3 is so clean
The Sigma f/1.4 lenses for E-mount are some of my favorite APS-C lenses of all time. Perfect focal length combo from 16-56 mm.
so true, sigma 16mm1.4 was an eye opener for me
@@mirrorlessny Lol, same. It's just great.
Can’t wait to see the follow up video with the xt4 I’m looking to upgrade myself
Happy news for you, Fuji came out with XT4 and it as a flip screen
lol i am so agree with you.
Does the M50 have a port for external microphones? And what’s a cheap budget lens for it?
Awesome review Thomas hope you enjoy your X-T4 when you pick up one...
Thank you, I ordered the m50 3 days ago, and in time I'll be looking for the new banana, so I'll be waiting for your x4 review
James Miller what now? How do I get this?
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto And it's pretty easy to download onto your camera. You just need to download the canon m50 picture profile software from Canon's website. Then hook up your camera to your computer. Then boom! Put those bad boys on there. I do turn the sharpness all the way down on the c-log profile because it looks a little too digital though.
This was very helpful. I’m looking to start vlogging and video making. The m50 is what I’m looking at getting. Thanks
great and very honest, you got the like buddy! thank you for great work!
Good to know what setup you use for video. I am thinking to buy XT3 for stills because its price will drop for sure.
Sony A6400/A6600 would tick all your requirements with that Sigma trio. A small kit overall coupled with great sensor .
nice video man. Mine is in the shop for repairs atm!! lol...he tossed it over his hands and said "this is well used""...and its true...this camera can take what you throw at it, I love it. P.S its just the on/off switch thats playing up on mine. great video, thanks for sharing
Refreshing to see someone putting out such great content with the m50 while similar channels talk about how important the 1dx2 is.
Other channels talk about how important the Sonys are.
@@dx3200 I know one such channel... A dude with the gray hair and there's a woman also ;)
I am a Canon shooter but I have to admit if I was going to invest in another system it would be Fuji. Only thing that concerns me is I am also a Adobe user and as you pointed out in another video Fuji works better with Capture One software.
I have been using the Sigma 16mm on my Sony a6500 for the past year and have loved it. It does all I wanted it to do.
it might be a good idea to hang on the M50 for a while longer. while the X-T4 has got the flipout screen and better/faster autofocus, it still seems (from early reviews at least) to not have the smooth video-centric autofocus of the Canon. the X-T4 tends to autofocus like a stills camera, where it rapidly flickers between different focal distances, as opposed to smoothly tracking its subject.
maybe firmware updates (and actual production models) will fix that issue, but i'd definitely wait for in depth reviews before dropping $1700 on the X-T4 just for video.
What's with all the dislikes ? Great video, keep doing you man 💯
I'm not a photographer but just a normal youtuber in the block so I can't say much! 👊😎
Main complaints on xt3 from Thomas:
Battery life
Flippy screen
Af
Well I believe Fuji has addressed all of those concerns haha.
yeah mate its an awesome lens im so glad I got it when it come out for my m50 super happy and cant wait fr m50 up date rumoured to be in sept this year fingers crossed
Great info! Ill be looking into that sigma lens.
Waiting for your review on the xt4 👍🏼👍🏼
people love the canon m50, i mean who doesn't. you just earn a subs here
It's such an amazing little camera, still love mine
Thank you for the great information!
love it! I have both cameras!! Did you test the Canon M 22mm? Awesome lens! f2.0
Nice vids BTW you can shoot slow motion with the M50 (I have one) you just need to go the menu the camera icon tab then the first tab below it and then movie rec. quality and then you want to chose high frame rate and set it to enabled and make sure your camera is set to NTSC not pal because with ntsc you have 120fps and with pal only 100fps.
how is the quality when shooting in 120fps?
@@IzzuddinAsj unfortunately slow mo is limited to 720p however its still a nice option
Hi Thomas, I don’t know if it has already been mentioned in the comments but, Cine style can be loaded onto the M50
@@pawezarnowiec9079 Read again, the viltrox speed booster changes that.
what do you think about a6600
love it,,,did a review on it, it has some flaws like rolling shutter & so so ibis but it depends what things are most important to you
Excellent video. I use my M50 for everything on my channel. Will look into this Sigma lens! Subbed.
Ah yes, but the screen flips up and not out. Otherwise I'd get a Sony. 👍
0:52, which lense?
I was thinking earlier that I was really missing the Sunday episodes. Lo and behold, a notification pops up. 👍👍 Has Monty been playing with that camera outside? Good grief! As someone else has asked, will we now get to see the mean comments of 2019, it's an annual obsession. Yes, the X-T4 appears to update the perceived shortfalls of the X-T3, but the X-T3 is still a beast for most peoples' needs. It is amazing that M50 has survived so long. Of course, I believe it's been to camera hospital a few times, specifically for a dangling flippy screen. Rock on!
Sigma make some stunning glass. Great journal again Tom.
Thanks mate, no-nonsense & informative. may I ask how does the sigma work with auto focus ?
