MDF floating shelves without brackets

- This is how I do floating shelves. Fix the wooden battens to the walls. Doesnt matter if its bricks or plasterboards. It will hold on any weight (books are the heaviest) and its not going to bend. Straight stong shelves.
Than I cover it with MDF. Depends how chuncky you like the shelves so either 9mm or 12mm or 15mm. However you like it. Also i use slim screws they called "flooring screws" i get them from screwfix or toolstation. They have very slim screw head-like the nail.
Last its simply wood filler, sanding, caulk around and paint. Easy, quick, solid and strong.

Great job . Iv been looking for a technique like this . Can you tell me for your shelf frame , did you pre make it then fix to wall ? Or did you make it piece by piece onto the wall ?
Regards
Karim
Thanks Karim, glade it was usefull to post video like that somothers can donthis easy job themselfs. Nice one!
So i did piece by piece onto the wall.
Good luck! 💪 you got it brother!
Great work fella! Did you pocket hole the frames? Also, There seems to be screw holes in the front of the frame but no baton behind?
Cheers man. Pocket hole the frames?hmm sorry im polish dont understand whats pocket hole :)
The screw from the front goes into the wood on the side at an angle yeah.
Cheers
What measurements do u use for the frame and covering
This one is 9mm mdf and 25mm wooden battens inside.
what tools would I need to do this? Is it possible to avoid using power tools?
Hey candice, you ll definetely need a drill. Cos you need to drill thru the battens and into the wall and screw those wooden battens to the wall. Than you beed saw to cut shelve and ideally plunge saw. Power tools are essensial here. But good luck!
@@FinePineNorwichCarpenter what would you use the plunge saw for to cut the shelves? I have a drill :)
@@candicehunter8417 thats right to cut the big sheets of MDF boards to right size shelves. You could meassure up and give the meassurments to the guys in timber store for cutting and youd just collect it already nicely cut pieces. Thats another way to do this job without a saw. Good luck!
@@candicehunter8417 hey Candice, you need to cut the big pieces of wood into right size reqtangle shape...as your alcove is tje depth and width so you need the saw....i hope that helps!
What is the final thickness of the shelf ? Thanks
I think i used 12mm mdf on cover top and bottom pluse the wood which was about 25mm so together 12mm +12 +25 = 49mm thickness of the shelve plus 1mm of paint 😀. 50mm 👌
How do you screw the front batten into the side battens? And what length screws and wall plugs do you use to go through the wood and fix it to the wall?
Hey Sarah...front batten is screwed to the sode battens at 45degeee angle.
I used 60mm screws and 40mm wall plugs
Good luck!
