    Hey! Did ya hear?
The USWNT defeated Brazil 1-0 to win the Gold Medal in the 2024 Olympics.
We talked about that football match. Brazil was fast, smart, and aggressive early. The USA's defense and goalkeeping held up. It was entertaining.
We also talked about hydration breaks, who played "the better match," a bright future for Brazil and USWNT, and so much more.
Toward the end of the show: Germany upset Spain to win the Bronze Medal. How the hell about that?
Immense thanks to everyone who's watched the show throughout this tournament. We greatly appreciate the comments and conversations we've had with all of you, and we look forward to more!

The front line and the back line are solid. The midfield needs work but we need to remember that they played without Cat, who is Emma’s preferred 10. Lilly is already the best US 8 and she is only 16. Shaw can be frontline depth but she also might be a better 10 than Cat, and Croix is the next gen Lavelle. Despite her mistake on social media, Albert scored on a rocket and had the assist they led to the goal-medal goal; she is as a pretty darned goo box-to-box mid for a a 20 year old (do I have that right?). Our midfield is gonna be amazing by the time we play our next tournament. The future under Hayes- who has barely had a chance to coach the team yet but has given them enormous confidence - is awesome.

Shaw is not on the same level as Cat. Not even close. How soon we forget Cat is truly world elite, especially once fully fit.

Albert was named player of the final game by absolutely all the specialized sites and this young woman is only 30% away from showing what she can do because the others in the uswnst do not know how to play like her and with She.
Albert is a tiki taka player like those of the Barça team (quick passing and possession) and for this you need superior technique and knowing how to play with both feet.
Otherwise, I also think that Albert probably has the best long-distance shot in women's football today (see his goals at Notre Dame, PSG and the one in uswnst) on both the left and right feet.
It is a shame that too often Smith, Swanson and Rodman forget to cross back for Albert otherwise she would be an ultimate weapon with her shooting quality.
From what I know, Emma Hayes wants to rebuild the team around Albert and give him the keys to the team for years to come..

Excellent post on Albert. Thank you for sharing. Emma wants the team to move the ball faster. I thought Fox- Rose- Rodman did that great at times. Albert to Swanson for the gold was Busquets level quick decision making by Albert.

Thanks for recognizing that US were better team though slightly. Really pissed me off seeing people online being so negative. Didn't they see the tactical changes Hayes made at halftime & players executing it almost perfectly? Only dangerous Brazil chance was the big Naeher save at the end. Whereas right from the start of the 2nd half, we defended well & even started creating chances before the goal.
About Girma & Fox, who have been amazing defenders this tournament, getting cooked in the 1st half, it's not entirely due to fatigue. They are young defenders who've not come up against many saucy creative Brazilian attackers before. This is a learning experience for them. They became better throughout the match & this experience will help them when they face such attackers in the future.
Being a Chelsea fan, while Emma wants us to posses the ball more, she's not wedded to any particular style of play. She's practical and sets up her teams to win. She can play a low/mid block counterattack/direct way to possession heavy depending on the opposition from Spain to Zambia or mix or even change it mid match or mid half. She's also not afraid to make subs sometimes even the 1st half. She also rotates starters a lot. She's just arrived. She did as little as possible in terms of tactics without overwhelming the players & player identification to set us up for wins. Give her time to get to know the player pool, & we may get full Chelsea experience.
Thanks for the entertaining podcast as always guys!

    • @IntoTheChannelPod

Great point on Girma and Fox's trouble with the Brazilian attackers being less about fatigue and more about style. That makes the most sense because they were able to improve as the match went on.
And we are certainly hoping for some of that Chelsea experience with this team. If she can make this kind of impact after just joining, it's only natural that the entire fanbase gets excited for the future.

Hi, Brazilian here! loving this podcast 🇧🇷 very happy with our performance this match.
It was the first time Arthur Elias coached a big worldwide tournament in his career, but he’s the most successful footfem coach in brazil right now. Still, we weren’t sure he could take us to finals, the guy’s crazy!! He switches everyone around basically every match and the decision on which players to take to the Olympics was VERY controversial.
AMAZING result though, simply incredible! In the end, not having Kerolin (FWD) in the final match and going against Emma Hayes, who’s one of the best coaches in the world really did us in.
Very exciting match and I’m very proud of the 🇧🇷 team! BRA Women’s Football team is alive again, thank god, and just in time to host the world cup!!

Another thing is: Ludmilla is known for being fast, but not for getting the ball in the net 😭 lmao
She’s bad at finishing, Gabi Portilho wasn’t having the best day and couldn’t win one on one, so Ludmilla had to take the shots, which is not her strong suit, it’s Portilho’s and Kerolin’s, who was injured.
Arthur’s biggest tactic was getting the first few goals in right at the beginning, like with Spain, then changing the team around from offense to defense hold the score.
That’s my perception from what I know and I think it would’ve 100% worked had we had an uninjured Kerolin and Gabi in a better day.

We hope they get signed off to european teams so they can get better coaching and conditioning in the meantime. That’s what really gonna determine if we’re gonna make it far in the World Cup to be honest.

Brazil def CAME FOR the US. But that double pivot was a good call. Brazil was in like a 2-1-8 or something nuts (Brazil nuts), like how did they have so much up front? They were rocking, but honestly, the US (Uncle) weathered their storm. I was pretty down on our performance in the 1st half when I watched live. But on the re watch we weren’t as bad as I thought and Brazil wasn’t as good as I remembered. Brazil was better in the first half, but not by the lightyears I imagined. Hayes did a good job of managing what they were bringing.

No, if we go strictly by the book it was not offside.
Sophia Smith's run toward the ball did look like she was about to take control of it, but the rules are that you must play to the whistle (even if you suspect offside). In other words, Brazil was not entitled to slow down to protest, not even momentarily, so it was their mistake and theirs alone.
In boxing the referee says you must protect yourself at all times and in football the rule is that you play to the whistle.
That said, even if we put the rules to one side, Smith and Swanson already had the run on the back line. Brazil's defence could not have caught up no how.

Spain is still really new to the scene. They still haven't beaten Germany in a match. I just watched a preseason game between Hoffenheim and Barcelona where Barca won 5 to 1. They don't even need the Spanish national team players to be above average. They had a frontline of Rolfo Pajor and Grahhm-Hansen, Brugtr and Bruna at fullback, Weir and Pina in the midfield. Engen. And Leon. As defensive backs. There were only two unknown players. USA plays Spain in the under 20s in September. USA is loaded with 4 starters in the NWSL.

Spain are FIFA and UEFA Champions in ALL AGE GROUPS
(except UEFA seniors which should be sorted shortly).

I needed to take a minute to wrap my mind around the fact that this was Spain's first Olympics. I think it's fair to call them new to the scene. It's a great point that Barca can still smash teams without many of the starters from the Spanish national team. That's a scary sight for UWCL clubs.
MLS -- I think you're right that the start of this era definitely belongs to Spain with the titles across age groups. But I think it's fair to say that the major senior trophies are what truly define the eras, so the Euros and next World Cup are going to go a long way there. And you know we love the confidence in your country, so go ahead and talk your talk about the next Euros. Hopefully we'll see you out there next year!

It's not my country but it is my club and it is the backbone of Spain.
My issue was with the overstatement over an Olympic Games win and the statement about depth and youth of the talent pool.
Clearly, the record for Spain has something to say about that, and it's worth checking the age of Aitana, Mariona, Salma and Ona; even Alexia is barely 30.
Spain might have had a younger team at the Olympics than the USA -- I didn't check, but it's probably easy to do.
Spain looked worn out from the first match and got progressively worse, so I wouldn't be too harsh on the World Champions, after all, most of them just came off of winning the Nations League and the WCL against Lyon.
Objectively, (I know that's ironic) I agree with Lyndsey Horan post match that there wasn't much football played in the Final,
and we know that a fit Barca/Spain usually make a specialty of playing football when everyone wants to play rugby -
something they weren't up to on the day against Brazil.
Hence, I'm not ready to concede the era quite yet: Vicky Lopez and Claudia Pina haven't even had a run out.
Sadly, we may be back to the USA pounding Iceland and Uzbekistan out of season in Portland and Washington while Spain take on Sweden and the Netherlands in the Nations' League until the next World Cup,
but I hope Emma Hayes shows a bit more courage and adventure than that.

VAR got back with a decision on the goal pretty quickly. I thought the Duane play in the box looked like a penalty but on replay looked like both ran into each other, but if that was Alex Morgan who was ran into, would they have called it??? I wonder. I thought there were several calls that went the U.S.'s way to the point I was wondering if there was maybe some Bias.

I did think the ref for the final was the most professional ref we had in a while, although there were fouls on Ludmilla that should’ve been called and weren’t. That’s gonna happen, though.
I’m not one to complain about refs tbh, I think it is what it is, but it did strike me as odd to have Marta say it so openly, she usually doesn’t.
About the penalty foul on Portilho having been a miss on the VAR part is pretty much consensus over here. Better practice would’ve been to call the referee to check for herself and make 100% sure.
All in all, the US was technically the better team and Brazil wasn’t able to play its best strengths which is long air passes (idk how they’re called in English lmao), biggest mistake in Elias’ 2nd half changes imo, should’ve focused on players who could focus on that.

Otherwise, regarding Brazil, I think that its good tournament is thanks to its victory (undeserved?) against France who had dominated possession and especially who dominated the Brazilians athletically. I think this changed the overall future of the tournament because France seemed robust but lacked offensive creativity and lacked mental strength (again..)
Concerning the uswnst, I am surprised that you talk so little about the essential role of Korbin Albert during the final because she was named (easily) player of the match by all the best specialized football sites.
