Thanks I really appreciate that. That was really a gorgeous heron. When I saw it through my camera, it was amazing. I was a little disappointed that it missed the gopher but you just have to keep at it to get one in just the right lighting and orientation. That one was close.
I wonder how many Gophers are killed after being speared by the beak of a GBH or similar bird but could not be pulled from the ground? Imagine the mate coming back to find their mate dead and bloodied in the hole they made together!
I’m sure a few get away with wounds and some won’t make it. I have seen at least one time when a heron came up with a bloody bill but couldn’t get the gopher
My favorite one is the heron that caught gopher. She is far from the prettiest since she is missing a lot of feathers on her crop. She also has a very crooked claw on her left foot. She has a very short thick neck for a heron. I can usually spot her from a pretty good distance. She is quite small too for a GB heron. That said she is nearly fearless of me which makes her really easy to video and she is a really good hunter. She is also pretty predictable where she is. She has been hanging out pretty close to Spring Street entrance to El Dorado Park
The imagery at 5:30 to 5:40 is just incredible. Your channel is a hidden gem (for now).

What do you use to identify this specific heron?
