Hunting with Herons
This is a video that shows more of the heron hunting rather than just catching. Still the herons sometimes have to take hours to catch a gopher. Sometimes it only takes a few minutes.

Honey, we're going to have to dig these tunnels deeper.
Wtf
Skip to 2:28 for the action
Es ist immer wieder erstaunlich, wie groß die Brocken sind, die ein Vogel als Ganzes verschlucken kann. Man mag sich kaum vorstellen, daß solche Mengen auf einmal durch einen Schnabel passen.
Thanks. Danke schoen. My brother in law showed the video at a large party. The women screamed when the gopher was swallowed. I would have thought they would scream at the capture or choking but no, only at the swallowing.
Отличная сьемка! Блестяще!
Thank you. I had a good bird.
Next on the menu, chihuahuas
Fantastico 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
in the world of wildlife, if you are not at the table, you are likely on the menu. But in the world of civilised humanity, a western politician openly said the same at a international forum. what a joke!
What.the .shit
Wow, these things are savages. Your channel has some amazing footage.
Thank you very much!
What an amazing footage, thanks for this. I didn't know that herons are such ferocious predators. It just gobbles up the whole thing like a snake.
Before I met this particular bird, I too underestimated herons. I followed this bird off and on for more than a year. She was quite old and was missing feathers on her crop and she had a crooked toe but this bird was very surprisingly clever and really so aware of her environment. She could detect gophers when we would be clueless of their presence and then devise a good strategy to catch them. I know it might seem like I’m exaggerating her abilities but I don’t think so. She always managed to impress me.
@@jimzenor9148 I believe you, they almost look like big cats when they hunt, it's impressive.
Hmm fat dawg.🤣
Birds would swallow humans if they are bigger than you
The way this bird hunts on the ground, it's like watching a big cat hunt its prey. The stealth and the patience, I'm amazed that this is a bird doing all of this. What a vicious predator.
I’ve gained a lot of respect for herons in the last few years.
WTF did I just witness 😮
It stocks its prey like a cat
Yeah that’s how I always see them too, like a cat.
I think it likes the cover of the longer grass
Yeah it seems to like some long grass but not too much. On the other section of the park, I see them hunting on short grass (hunting bugs) I haven’t seen this particular heron for a month or so but I’ll keep looking.
何度か嘴から離しているのに、反撃もしないのは何故? 所詮は捕食される一方の下等な鼠公。
What did it do in the initial strike to incapacitate the gopher? Does it shake the prey in order to break its neck? It looks like it couldn't suffocate it. Nice catch by the way (of the heron's behaviour).
I think in this case this bird inadvertently pierced the gopher in the throat. It’s hard to see and I’m not sure but I did look at it multiple times and slowed way down. That is why I think the gopher was wiggling so much at the beginning. The bird then grabbed it by the neck and squeezed and shook it until it could be eaten.
Another good video. These birds are mesmerizing!
Thanks
i wish they had teeth
That little white lock hanging down the side of his head....reminds me of Vincent from "Pulp Fiction".
Yeah and the bird has a similar assassin job.
How long does it take for it to digest that thing and feel hungry again?
It was hunting again the next morning. When it eats a normal sized gopher, it will begin hunting again almost immediately, after just a few seconds. I seen it catch a gopher when it hadn’t finished swallowing the previous one.
Whats that woosh woosh woosh woosh sound?!?!
I believe that was wind noise. There were a lot of background noises in the park that day.
@@jimzenor9148 Thank you! But its to evenly and it is in your other videos too :/
@@high-co2427 honestly I’m not sure. Gardeners are often around. There are drones and model airplanes. There is a shooting range. Cars drive by. Helicopters and planes fly over. Even the freeway is not too far.
@@jimzenor9148no problem! :) 1:49 to 1:51, think its a car on the road. Sounds like a soundeffect right out of Transformers :D
I don’t get it. This bird invited the gopher to dinner and even gave him a ride!
I watch grey herons in a river most Sundays they have some patience standing for hours on end just waiting for a fish to come by .
I know it’s basically population control but damn it must suck to be a gopher there 😭
Yeah everything is feasting on them. Even the domesticated dogs catch them all the time. I know a guy that walks his yellow terrier and that dog is amazing at catching gophers. It likes to chase herons too.
Have a thousand of these around sewers in NYC, especially around any trash that is left out, and in alleys too.
That’s interesting. I bet they wouldn’t mind eating a rat or two.
Saw a big coyote get one of these once. It had to drag it away.
Amazing footage
Thanks

I had no idea these things ate small mammals
I followed these guys a lot and I finally saw one eat a gopher. I tried for a couple years to document one actually succeeding at catching one. Interestingly, this particular heron with the missing toes was the heron I consistently found hunting gophers. In El Dorado Park, night herons will spend most of their time sitting on garbage cans picking off bugs. This particular heron seemed to have a different agenda and hunted much more often. It is bigger and stockier than the other night herons in the park. I haven’t seen it for a month or so. It is a very unusual heron and seems to have acquired a special set of skills that most of the rest of the night herons have not learned.
You got to admire the patience of the bird. Rip gopher. It's not easy out there, but in your own way you're helping preserve our wonderful ecosystem by keeping these birds and others fed b
sorry but i find Herons and storks absolutely Scary. must be why i hate fencing lol
I was planning to try and remove some fishing lines from the foot of one but I simply couldn’t catch it. I was very scared of that beak.
People fail to realize that birds can fk things up. There was a time when we humans would be on the menu.
dinosaurs still hunt our ancestors...
Wow
to tiny preys like this, dinosaurs still exists
Amazing video ! I am wondering what camera and lenses you used?
Thanks. I have a Canon R6. I almost always shoot at maximum 4K with my EF 400 mm DO lens.
@jimzenor9148 That's why it looks so good you have a really good tool, nice 👍
While kayaking in St Joe’s Bay at H T Stone Memorial Park I watched a blue heron attack a pretty big snake. After repeatedly stabbing the snake with his beak he swallowed the snake whole. What a sight that was.
That would be a cool adventure. I’d love to encounter that and try to video it.

He also goes up in the tree to eat it because if you're on the ground it'll get covered in ants and insects and everything else that will annoy you while you're trying to eat and any other bird or prey item will find you and possibly eat you also! Or at least disturb your dining pleasure!
Yeah. There was a red tailed hawk that frequently landed on some nearby power lines. I have seen the stealing from the larger herons so I am pretty sure it would steal this bird’s food too.
When I was a youth, we were feeding the ducks at a pond. One of these herons was there. Never having seen one before, we tossed it some bread. The heron picked up the bread and put it in the water. Using the bread as bait, it caught six fish, the sixth being too big for it to swallow. It readjusted the bread between every fish to keep it in just the right spot.
I saw one do that with a big beef rib it took from the garbage. It ran the bone with some meat on it to the water and dropped it in and then waited watching over it. These birds are very clever.
They are dinosaurs
Yeah literally they are. This time the dinosaurs outlived the mammals.
They will be the next terror birds of the future!
It was great seeing you in the park Jim! Thanks for posting.
It was great seeing you too Rod. It has been a pretty slow year for finding herons but I’ll keep looking. Jim
How will we know if its an early summer now 😢
Man, I've never realized how much gophers kind of look like rats.
Yeah they do. I saw a night heron flying with what I thought was a rat a couple years ago but in hindsight I’m pretty sure it was a gopher.
