oof saw this after my previous comment, i have an idea for a mod or a subnautica 2 idea, what about deep sea mining, you work at a "extractor" when it all goes bad, the substance you were mining affects the animals in the deep slowly creeping into the wholes map, if you dont seal it and discover what happened in time the water becomes toxic and harder to progress. tame animals are now hostile, we could see infected leviathans or creature forms that are scarier to encounter, feel like that would be interesting. thoughts?

It might not perfect, but it is still one of the best subnautica animations out there
I think the reason the kelp in Subnautica doesn't lag the game out is just because Blender is fundamentally a different engine than Unity or Unreal. It's comically easier to lag Blender out with a model that doesn't hit FPS at all in an engine like Unity/Unreal. So if this does ever end up becoming a mod you don't need to worry about getting rid of the kelp once it ends up in-game
it is because of instancing, unreal and blender automatically instance all of the duplicated objects
This overall sounds like an amazing project and mod idea...
I'd definitely play the mod should it release in the future.
As for the behind the scenes... I'm proud of you and your friends that you got to create such an amazing trailer with just 3 people.
Even if it took a while, the result is just incredible.

at 8:40 for the lag in the viewport, instead of duplicating the kelp with shift d use alt d because it uses the original data from the first kelp instead of creating more data
this looks like such an interesting project and I'm so damn interested and whole heartedly support it!
Something that could maybe solve the issue with the driver not falling out of the chair when piloting the sub could be adding a securing harness like the escape pod chair has to the chair that just holds him in place (or imagining the chair has in built high tech gravity tech that just holds you in place lol i'd guess the aurora should have had something like that on board probably)
I would also be interested in a mod that brings back the abyssal planes at the bottom of the void
I'm having a lot of fun playing with my friends on subnautica with the multiplayer mod and I hope I can get to experience this with them.
Can't wait to hear their screams of terror in the deep dark dark deep down.
Also a dock for the new sub would look really cool being integrated into a mega base
Tackling and making this dream into a reality is an absolutely monstrous scale task and however errors or mistakes you guys make at the end of the day this is insanely impressive and I think people take for granted how hard it is to work this hard and still have your level of optimism 😂. Me and almost certainly many many others are in support of this project throughout the highs and bumps in the road.
Keep up the hard work Aci and the rest of the team you guys are saints!
A cool idea i had for a mod like this was like a ghost leviathan nest. Where you could gather some rare materials or have a pet ghost! But you would probably have to be careful cause the ghosts would be guarding the nest. This was just a idea I had
isn't the tree cove exactly that but without the pet ghost and guardian ghost? it has rare/useful mineral deposits, and its the nesting spot of ghost leviathans

I once made a zbrush version of the Reaper of Leviathan. But I hope didn’t lose the folder. I might have to check slack! Or just make it again it was pretty easy! But Zbrush is expensive!

making this into an actual mod won't be as hard as making it from scratch, you can just reuse the models and textures, but then you would have to worry about scripting

8:49 It's lagging because viewport is rasterizing (I think it's the word?). It's due to how the viewport works. Go into the rendered (Cycles) view and there will barely have any lag.
Also switch render device from CPU to GPU if you have a compatible GPU (It helps... a lot)
I'll also assume the kelp is instanced to save on memory and avoid hell placement (If not you should), if so you can switch the original kelp model to be visible as a bounding box (Or a very low poly LOD) to be able to see the scene without performance issue..
Rendered view has even worse performance, and GPU rendering is not possible because the texture cache exceeds the size of the Dedicated GPU Memory :/

And god how much GPU memory do you have? If you have 16GB it should be enough if the scene is well optimized which leads me to believe that the kelp is not instanced.
Anything that appears many time, like grass & the kelps, should be instanced in one way or another.
Also yes btw volumetric are performance & memory eaters. I call them volumptious due to that ahah.
Please look up Boids! They'd be perfect for your fish particle movement system, it would be simple to implement (relatively), and the behavior of Boids has been used for at least 20 years to replicate fish behavior in video games.

1:29 I’m glad “Neptune” didn’t win, because there’s the Neptune Rocket already in the game. It would be kind’ve redundant. “Hydra” was the best, though “Sidewinder” sounds pretty good. “Boomerang” would’ve been fitting, except that there’s already a Boomerang fish in the game. Again, redundant. “Squid” is just, “meh.” I’m not totally against it, but I’m not for it, either.
I think if you want more people to watch this one as well, maybe change the name to something else than behind the scenes. I really want people to watch this video as well, in this series of Call of the Void. Maybe change the name from behind the scenes, to something like "The road to the idea" or something idk. I just want people to watch this one aswell
Side note: I can see the void peeper concept being reused as a void boomerang with tentacles instead of fins.

Could make it so on the hydra you can dock you seamoth or prawn on the side where the round light is would be usefull.
I don't think even the Prawn is designed to ever go that deep...

I do, in fact NOT have the resources, which is why it's important to see how much interest there is in a continued series covering this mod
If these videos do well enough to be able to support development, I can get a team together and pay them using the ad revenue
If all the videos do as badly as this one seems to be doing at the moment, that won't be possible.
