Basically she became what's know as the "dumbass in distress." This is where early on it's established that this character (Blake) is a well trained and competent fighter, then as the series progresses she starts getting dumber and getting put in danger more and more, and isn't confident unless her girlfriend comes in to save the day.
@@StoogesFan That’s also been reflected in her personality. She used to be moody, assertive, and willing to speak up and act on her own beliefs. Now she comes off as submissive, codependent, and simply follows what everyone else is doing.
@@thomasraines1396 Mostly due to the fact that since the White Fang/Adam storylines have been wrapped up, there's nothing else tying her to the story besides Yang.
@@mauriceisaac3646 that’s true, she only exists to be there for Yang, it’s not like she has any meaningful relationship with any of the other characters.
Gotta love Weiss' new signature ability, angrily point her weapon at the enemy Plus Crescent Rose's inconsistent weight, suddenly Ruby can twirl it like it's weightless and then in her fight with Neo, she swings it like weighs 1000 pounds
@@janestarkage1 best thing they could do for Weiss is shatter her rapier into a thousand pieces. Just commit her to using Dr Strange style glyph combat and summons. It's not interesting in any way watching her use Myrtenaster as a wand.
Early RWBY's story was written around the fights. Current RWBY's fights are written around the story. Normally the latter is a good philosophy to have, but for a show that was so defined by its action, it really undermines the action scenes we could have. The only recent fight I could really tell was something that felt like an event that the story built up our expectations for and delivered on it was Ironwood vs. Watts. The rest all felt like footnotes in the script. Pointing out how many not-quite-fights are also quite eye-opening; I feel like the animators' efforts would be better spent on singular, extensive action setpieces instead of numerous small moments. At least all the hard work goes into much more rewatchable, engaging content.
@@000Dragon50000 Yup, writing fights around your story would be the better option in most cases but it just doesn't work for a story that didn't really have one and was mostly about it's excellent and really amazing fights.
I get the feeling RWBY was intended to be dead fantasy but with Monty's own original characters. Nothing but epic fights. A story told through the fights alone. No dialogue, no lore, no world building. Just entertaining, self-contained narratives like what dead fantasy was. That would explain the excessive amount of characters by volume 2 and the show only being entertaining when the fights start.
I had no idea RT hasn't had a fight choreographer in five years, that actually explains a lot. Also I don't know if this is true or not but I remember reading somewhere that part of the reason Sun didn't go with the others to Atlas was because his weapon was too difficult to animate. also, loved that soup store bit, it had me bursting out laughing
We’ve seen with the Sun and Ilia fight that if the animators were given the opportunity , they can get really creative. I remember watching a video with the specific animator, and she said she studied Monty’s animation style for WEEKS, and the fight only lasted less than a minute.
@@maxinecook2047 That was Kim Newman, the animator of the Sun V Ilia fight in V6, and what @Jiménez said is taken from one of the commentary tracks. While she exited RWBY after V5, she later returned for V7. On October 15th 2019 however, she left RT. (from the RWBY wiki)
Monty called himself a filmmaker, not just an animator, he saw all of his animations as short films, so he knew what made a scene entertaining which I think RT severely misses right now. In some points of the commentary tracks, you get them mentioning how they wanted a specific take to convey the message of a scene, but there's no one doing so for fights, and personally, I've seen a lot of animators ruin their own fights with bad camera angles. Also, a lot of the time (maybe less in this volume), it's hard to justify why characters are fighting, so the conversation in between in just white noise. Villain goes "I'm really mad", hero goes "why you mad", "idk, catchphrase" and it takes all the weight away from it. There's never that classic Jackie Chan technique of starting at the bottom and gaining the upper hand as the fight goes on and even fight stances never portray how the characters feel or their fighting style.
This is what happens when an action director tries to make a series and employs writers who don't understand his creative vision to fill in the gaps between the fights. Monty handled the fights Miles and Kerry were tasked with the responsibility of justifying the reason for the fight through storytelling and well...you saw how that worked out.
“At least the effects were decent.” - Sokka Volume 8 was so sad. I was rooting for no one but Penny. And then she turned human and ruined everything. I know it’s not her fault, just Ruby because she can’t let go. But THANK YOU for mentioning Neo one shotting Yang. Because that literally makes less sense than Penny being human. And why does Weiss overuse her glyphs to “skate”? She can literally hop around like she’s been doing. The way they all fight is so wrong it’s not even them anymore. And suddenly blake has no dust when it really matters, as if she wastes it in a single fight.
Personally I felt like Penny was on a death wish the entire Volume, to the point it was really weird. Her first solution to most problems was self-sacrifice, and nothing else.
I think something that I noticed is that they zoom out (or too close in) a lot more than they used to. Like Winter & Ironwood are very zoomed out at one point, whereas at other points everything is too close. I feel like similar to what you said, it’s cause they don’t know what to do is so they’re trying to hide mistakes from the audience. Or if something is zoomed out, we don’t notice the flaws we would if it was close up. Cinder and Winter also has a lot of zoomed out parts, to the point I remember being like “they’re so small, I can’t see!!” - the camera work for Yang vs Neo feels totally different and so much better. I think that fights should be used to serve the story, but the story demands fights and conflicts that they just can’t deliver for whatever reason. Like we naturally as a viewer think “well there should be a point of tension here, shouldn’t there?” But they turn away from looking at that conflict to the largest extent they can, instead of using the energy to propel forward. It’s kinda sad that nothing will ever be like V1-3, they did have a fight person though who did Sun’s choreography especially well in V4, which I think had some of the better fights in the later seasons, but they left. Maybe that’s why things went downhill in comparison to V4’s fights. The SOUP JOKE AT THE END I- 💀
I definitely agree that they seem to be hiding animation weirdness with their camera work, and I wish they wouldn't have to do that. On the topic of the person who did Sun's choreography, I think that's kinda part of the problem- the fact that each animator seems to be in charge of also coming up with their own choreography. While I'm sure plenty can do that well, not everyone can. Some people may be able to animate a fight beautifully, but aren't knowledgeable in proper fighting techniques, or how to frame these battles; and so would need a choreographer to direct them on what to do.
@@twiinsiink To hear that rooster teeth has had a high choreographer in years it's a prizing to me. The reason why is because I'm pretty sure some of the animators have actually done animated fights for death battle and I know That there was a new team working on the new season of red vs blue that has some pretty interesting fight scenes I think
Team RWBY looks way well-trained and professionals at fighting if you look at Volumes 1-3 fights. But if you look at them in their fights in further volumes they look inexperienced.
Nice to hear you talking about this stuff again and hopes that you aren’t drawn away from doing so again from, prior, events. Still like the other stream of content you’re making.
So much for Yang’s “I may not be faster, but I’m smarter” line . I’m convinced that volume 6 fight just exist in a vacuum. She repeats the exact same mistakes she was supposed to learn from for the sake of cheap drama. What is character development?
As far as I'm concerned, Cinder vs. Penny in the arena was the best fight in the volume because of the way the structure and action of the fight reflected thier character arcs. It also probably applies the environment and character to the choreography the best in the volume. Though that's not a very high bar.
The thing is that Rooster Teeth do have good fight cheographers/animators - look at David Fischer who did Lucario vs Blazkien as well as Kristina Jean who does a lot of DEATH BATTLE 3D Fights. Even aftet Torrian left there's still definetly pepole at RT with a passion for fight animation. Look at Blake vs Mikasa and compare it to any fight in V8
@@s3studios597 Dumbass excuses that make no since RWBY has suffered in quality since Monty died. Rooster Teeth is trying and they have their moments but its not enough most times these people can make this show better with real choreography like whats seen in death battle.
@@s3studios597 I think the reason is probalby DEATH BATTLE gives them a lot more freedom. With RWBY at least post Vol 3 - the fight animators are probalby very restricted compared to a show like DEATH BATTLE or Red vs Blue: Zero are given a lot more freedom - that's my best guess as to why Vol 8 had meh fights.
Genuinely don't understand how they keep making the same mistakes. Some are so basic, things like: - Fights need to be at least 2 minutes long. If it's a finale, we expect it to be more like 5 minutes. - Do NOT interrupt the fight so that the characters can have a conversation, or even worse, see other characters stand around - If there are other combatants in the area, they either need to be actively fighting or have a solid reason to not be. And not 'they got hit by a single attack and sit there dazed but uninjured for the whole fight' - Twirling a weapon is not fighting - Flying away is not fighting
This video highlights my main concerns for this series tbh. Nobody likes to play the Monty card and generally they shouldn't, but seriously, why is it that - since he passed - the only fight that's been particularly memorable was one based on his own past animation ( Adam vs Blake/Yang)? They don't even know what they want out of the Maidens anymore. They started off fighting like DBZ characters, now they just fly and have glowy eyes. It really makes you wonder just how much the show's animation has suffered through the lack of a fight choreographer, and how much better it could have been WITH one. Are they just terrified of the potential backlash of hiring one, afraid they'll be accused of 'replacing Monty'? Do they not have the money? Do they just not give a shit? It's impossible to tell and considering we haven't heard of any such hiring prior to V9, then I assume Volume 9 will continue to suffer these same faults.
They are arrogant enough to think they can do without one and are incredibly wrong. Likely the entire show will end and we still will have not gotten a fight choreographer to replace Monty
@@mittenvonscrufflears7233 Unfortunately, I am of the same mind. CRWBY are very sensitive about criticism and tend to cherry pick which things they address and which they ignore. This is the sort of thing they'd definitely ignore.
It’s so annoying cause making maiden fights should be so fucking easy to make interesting and fun when there’s 3 seasons of ATLA and 4 seasons of LOK out there to draw from
@@Step43099 Right? There's SO much to draw from for the Maidens, it should be easy peasy. But instead they've gotten worse and worse Raven v Cinder might have been a bit excessive, but it was at least something
This was A++, I truly hate a lot about the fights, and I am really glad you pointed out Ruby was in only one fight and that this was Cinder and Team RWBY's first time really fighting each other. I like when these things are pointed out because I always never really notice them in the moment. Also the X-Files theme while the Illuminati dollar sign eye thing was over the Hound's face 😂😂😂
It’s nice to see you talk about RWBY again! I don’t actually watch the show at all, but I enjoy hearing you and Critter talk about it. Hopefully the toxicity has died down so you can keep on doing what you want!
The last few episodes were very obviously made on crunch time. Hell that could easily sum up a lot of this volume, a reminder that Miles said sometime at RTX that they had a really big plot element that they had to cut out for time, which probably explains why so many of the fights and story beats felt so disjointed and almost random.
Yep. There was plans for Ruby and Blake to go the monster whale. I can see why it was cut, it's not like it would the first time the fucking protagonist meets silver eye to eye with villain. oh wait
When you had announced that you weren't going to do RWBY videos anymore back in April, I was sad that I wouldn't be able to see a video about the Volume 8 fights because I always looked forward to those after each volume. Let's just say this was quite the treat! And I adore the thumbnail! Glad to see you back, and I hope you can settle back into RWBY videos again at your own pace.
I think the main problem with Penny fights were that they was making her fight like any other character. She’s a robot she should literally have eyes at the back of her head there should be no reason why she was getting beat like that.
V8 only beats v5 due to me due to Ironwood at least being entertaining a ruin character but entertaining regardless v5 is just boring i hated the faust mini arc in 5
Yay! Also, kinda wild that we've somehow sunk lower than volume 5's fights. Guess this just goes to show that once again quantity doesn't equal quality. Love the thumbnail btw.
I thought for sure Qrow and Ironwood were gonna have a confrontation before the end of the volume only for them to not share a scene together like bro… 🤨😑
You know what, yeah that is a real bummer. Those two fights were even built up a bit in earlier volumes, or at the very least insinuated (like when Qrow charged Ironwood during the fall of beacon only for it to be a red herring of sorts).
@@garmadonthesensei59 Yup. Penny in my mind was gonna be a huge focus in the volume only to disappear for half of it and be unconscious for a few episode, turned human and NEVER SAW HER FATHER AGAIN BTW. But we needed to watch RWB sip tea in a Fucking house for half the runtime fingering each other while the plot happens outside
This really gets me, especially since we can see how Ironwood cares for Qrow and even hugs him in V7 - I was hoping that would go somewhere but it didn't. It would've been impactful for them to fight considering their history but instead Qrow's in jail for most of the volume and they haven't even seen each other since V7.
Every time I see any clip from the earlier volumes it makes me sad. Even the girls movements like at 12:31 show more style and personality than lately. I hope this big delay they are taking for this volume helps with the fights, cuz they were one of the best things about the show. Also loved the CodeMENT edit at the end that clip is never not going to be funny
Fantastic to see you doing RWBY stuff again. A great video. THANK YOU! The fact that Yang gets one shorted by Neo in the end fight has annoyed me to no end. Yangs supposed to be the team tank, yet they treat it the exact same as the time she lost her arm for some cheap drama. Also wow! Didn’t think it was possible for CRWBY to score lower than volume 5. Shows they never fail to disappoint.
11:52 Yeah these guys manage to smuggle a bunch of college graduates to slave away to make the show look cool but they can't even hire a NOVICE fight choreographer? Yeah I don't fucking get it.
I also wonder why Rooster Teeth doesn’t hire a competent writing staff. I mean RWBY post volume 4 has a lot of plot holes I can make into a long list. And a lot of people said that Castlevania Nocturne, Hell’s Paradise, Teen Titans Go, Family Guy, Drawn Together and Chainsaw Man were bad. At least those shows were fun to watch.
For some reason the way this comment is framed it reminds me of a scene from Family Guy where Peter is shouting “YEAHHHHHH!” and by the end of the clip you just hear a soft “yeah!”
I really only remember Penny vs Ace Ops in high regards, but that’s mostly due Judgmental Critter’s review of the episode. After going back I was confused as to how Penny, who was able to beat a dozen White Fang members and bring down an airship and destroy two more in Vol 1 with no effort, is struggling against 4 opponents. While using maiden powers no less.
The 'What Measure is a Mook' trope; the White Fang members were only red-shirts; there specifically to get beaten up so Penny could show off what a badass she was. The Ace-Ops were established characters that are also supposed to be badasses, and Rooster Teeth was likely trying to pull damage control due to the controversy over how RWBY beat the Ace-Ops by showing that Marrow's comment about them holding back held weight. Not that it worked, or at the very least, it could have been done better.
@@johnking9943 I was going to mention skill difference between the Ace Ops and White Fang grunts, but the show is never consistent on the Ace Ops’ skills. And I’m not saying, “Just because Penny beat one group of people she should be able to beat another,” I’m saying her tactical prowess is inconsistent too.
@@jexelbur6872 there’s hardly any skill difference in RWBY that’s the problem. For example, in Naruto you know the difference between the Genin kids (Naruto, sasuke etc.) and their Chunin and Jonin sensei (Kakashi, Guy etc.) from them to the Legendary Trio, to the Kage and so on. With RWBY it’s more like everyone is as strong as another so long as the plot calls for it
What baffles me is that the Volume 8 fights haven't gotten nearly as much hate as the Volume 5 fights have and these are WORSE. I mean, I was incredibly disappointed with the fights this volume when in they should have been my favorite in the series. We're finally fighting Salem, Atlas is a warzone, RWBY is finally facing Cinder. The 2 most powerful beings on the planet are joining the fray. These fights should have been amazing. It should have made this volume have at least 3 of the best fights in the entire series. But instead we got this. It's extremely disheartening because this was one of the best opportunities the show will have to make AMAZING fights. This volume should have been the BATTLE volume. Instead it was the beating up little children= redemption arc volume.
@@upjohn1715 they are literally that one meme where the dog is just sitting at a table drinking a beverage with the house burning around him saying "This is fine."
Twiins: I give up, I won't talk about RWBY anymore. Twiins: Also, memery aside, let's get technical about fights. In my very bullshit opinion, there's generally three types of fights you can have in a show: -Brawls, which are fast-paced but long, and tend to be the most brutal, with the characters just beating the fuck out of each other until one of them stops crying, with the characters using a good combination of attack and defense to break each other; they tend to be very physical and up-close. A good example of this is the hallway fight in Old Boy, or more directly related to this, Yang versus Neo in V2. -Showdowns, which have a lot of buildup and take instants to complete, usually dependant on combat styles that are either well explained beforehand or which are detailed right afterwards. Think every cowboy movie pistols at dawn duel. -Matches, technical and defensive, usually at a distance, and with lots of analysis, more often dedicated to slowly withling away at an opponent than to directly harming them. Think almost every fight in JoJo. This is all just my dumb opinion, of course, but it is I think a good way to divide fights; if you draw a triangle between these three, most fights, fictional or real, will depend on one of these. And, in RWBY's case, the issue is that... It is a show that prides itself in brawls, with all four trailers and most of the early fights, along with, you know, most of Monty's style, having been fast-paced blow trades, but which is trying to mix that up with longer matches. That can of course work, but matches require a lot of thought to be put into the little details of the fight, and as you said, they don't have a fight choreographer, so it all just ends up turning into these on-to-offscreen fights that have to pause to explain themselves and, eventually, just not happen, in order to retroactively make themselves make more sense. Dunno if that makes, uh, sense, the way I worded it.
I seem to understand what you're saying. You have fast paced brutal fights, dramatic confrontations, and dangerous encounters that rely heavily on tactics. I would argue fights scenes can be broken down into three different categories: Spectacle fights that are there either because they make sense or are suppose to impress the audience with the atmosphere, choreography, and characterization, storytelling fights that are just as much about moving characters further in their personal journey as they are about the fight itself, pretense fights where the actual fight is secondary to the message the scene is trying to convey.
@@fightingmedialounge519 That is another good way to go about it. I'd say that in your system, the fights in RWBY tend to go towards spectacle, with them moving in later volumes towards... Spectacle, that gets often interrupted with exposition or dialogue.
Actually, a possible types of figths in a show depends on world rules. Really possible make combination of "brawls" and "matches", if battle mechanic make characters create breaks during the battle, changing tactics or otherwise preparing for the upcoming (for example, creating "deferred spells" that the viewer can identify during their preparation). The lack of alternatives in modern action is simply a consequence of the fact that combat systems are made similar to real ones, in most cases. In other cases, they are only slightly changed (and "brawls" are created).
It's weird when you consider that RED VS BLUE ZERO, despite its lacking in story and comedy, had some really great choreography. Its like they put all of it into that show cause it was new since it came out at around the same time
It is weird! Especially since it's no secret that RWBY is the thing that makes RT the most money. Like, why not help your money-maker thrive a bit more?
@@twiinsiink Head Animator/Fight Choreographer of Zero is Torian Crawford, he worked on Death Battle as well and animated a few scenes in RWBY Volume 7 yet most work in RWBY seems to not even be fight animation based on his portfolio online

I hope to see more from you, and I can't wait to watch the rest after class! EDIT: And now having watched the video and thoroughly enjoying you ripping RT a new one, I think it's safe to say the only thing of value in the volume was the Hound.... aaaaaaand they killed it.
The fights in V8 were so disappointing. At the end of V7 I was so excited for the fights because we had like EVERYBODY here but then the fights were so boring. I think the most disappointing thing is RWBY and Salem and WTCH. We finally had all our main heroes and villains in one area and they barely interacted. The only one in RWBY who met Salem wasn't even Ruby it was Yang. Yang also is the only one who saw 2 members of WTCH (Cinder and Hazel) while the rest just saw Cinder. We literally have 4 main heroines and 4 villains (excluding Salem since she's final final boss) and they don't even fight? Tyrian just fucks off without fighting anyone and Hazel and Watts just die to other villains. This also leads into another of my main problems. WHERE IS OUR RUBY VS CINDER FIGHT?! Ever since volume 4 the show has been hyping up Cinder and Ruby having a big showdown and they've been in the same room 3 times (V5, V7, V8) and haven't fought each other. This show has set up this big hate Cinder has for Ruby and Ruby hates Cinder but for some reason the writers really don't want them to fight. Like if they don't want Cinder to fight Ruby, why did they make Cinder hate her so much. I thought this volume was gonna be THE volume for that fight, come episode 13 and they are literally face to face and what happens? Neo jumps in and forces Ruby to fight her and Cinder just fights Penny and Weiss for a bit. I just want to know why Cinder and Ruby are handled so poorly in this show.
It’s always been so funny to me that RWBY has a team of 4 villains that the main cast just never met and don’t even know who half of them are. And now 2 of them are dead via sacrifice and betrayal. Love a show with villains that literally never interact with the protagonists 👌🏾
Yes, I also wanted to see Ruby vs Cinder, some people saying"RuBY HAs slIVer EYeS", Cinder can interrupting Ruby from using those. Her Fall Maiden powers not a joke, she's like demigod or elder god level (if fully realised Maiden powers).
My favorite fight of the Volume is Maria vs Neo. I thought it was the most entertaining and it was the best showcase of powers and fight style. It makes perfect sense to me that Maria would be able to go toe-to-toe and beat Neo because of the way they fight. Neo is very reactionary and uses her oppenents momentum against them. Maria’s pre-reflexes allow her to counter this as she can sense what Neo will do and can adjust accordingly.
Is it weird that I finally sat down and binged volume 8 so I could watch Two RWBY videos back to back by you? Nah, it was great hearing what you had to say!
Given Cinder and Salem are the show's primary antagonists (and in Cinder's case, have been since the first volume) the fact that we know their fights aren't interesting spectacle and they have no interesting interaction with the four leads even when directly combating them... what reason is there to be invested in the primary conflict of the show?
@@astereotypicalgamer1708 her apreance in episode 1 is questionable considering while technically it is her model, how she's utilized story gives off the impression that they weren't exactly sure what cinders purpose was going to be. Also it isn't exactly correct to call Amin antagonist since volume one since while she may been orders to torch wick, he was the antagonist we primarily saw and most of the actual schemes seem to be his. The same way the emperor was technically a concept since the first star wars movie, yet the role of main antagonist fell to Vader considering he was actual driving force for several most of the conflicts in the movie.
@@fightingmedialounge519 Unfortunately with RWBY we must sift through some confusing and contradictory canon. Even if Cinder was intended to be a different character (and pretty much had to have a different motivation at the time because Maidens hadn't been conceptually realized at the time) she was still set up as an antagonist allied with Torchwick from the first episode.
@@astereotypicalgamer1708 I'm not necessarily denying that. What I'm trying to say that her place as a main antagonist in the first two volumes were tangential. She really didn't play as prominent of a role as torch wick, or even herself in later volumes.
I love the way you seem to able to put my thoughts on RWBY and its fights into words much better than I can. Your content is some of my favorite on UA-cam and I’m glad you’re still making it
Remember when Weiss was actually fast and didn't spam summons with a dramatic pose that leaves her wide open or blocks of ice? I hated her volume 7-8 look mainly because it weighs her down SO MUCH, the animators can't even animate her delicate/graceful dancing she'd incorporate into her combat style because she has a bigass bulky braid, bigass bulky dress, and bigass bulky jacket with puffy sleeves.
The only fights I liked was Penny vs Ace-ops, and Penny and Maria vs CEN. The rest were so mehhh. Once again the team in charge of choreography show their preference for single flashy moves that don't connect rather than actual combos/skirmishing (Ren is now a ranged fighter/marksman now???) The thing that annoys me the most is that whenever Ruby is on screen, you can tell they do everything they can to make sure Ruby doesn't get to fight lmao.
It’s so strange that our main character is so weak and pathetic 98% of the time and doesn’t get to have a good fight to herself. And when she does after what 5 years? It’s absolute dog shit. I just don’t get it like why do this, I see clips of Soul Eater and I’m infinitely saddened that Ruby will never get to maneuver and fight as gracefully as that
With how RT was improving in terms of fights, I hope the drop in quality was due to not having enough time, so that hopefully volume 9 with the extra time they are giving it, will have consistent quality
I hope you're right, but I'm also really tired of there never being "enough time" for this show. 8 years in, they should know how long they need to take by this point. We can't keep using "not enough time" as an excuse forever, just because by this point it's a deliberate choice, y'know?
@@twiinsiink true and I agree. I’m just a pretty optimistic person, but if volume 9 still has these garbage tier fights, I can’t say anything else to try to defend the show
Phenomenal analysis as always! It’s always such a thrill to see you break down the elements of each action scene and show examples of why it felt as disappointing as it did. Also it’s been years since I’ve heard I’m at Soup and I’m SO PLEASED
Good fight animators and choreographers made fights for Red vs Blue. And the fights they made were good. The fights for the eighth volume of RWBY were done by those who remained.
The characters are always doing something stupid. Like Weiss just standing on Cinder's glyph and letting her aura get broken. The way they animated the scene, there was time for both her and Ruby to move out of the way. Or Maria staring at Penny for entirely too long when she fell and letting herself get suckerpunched by Neo because she just stopped fighting. It's like RT knows what they want to happen but can't think of a way to work it in so they just make the characters fucking stupid.
Glad you're back! What a frustrating volume. I can't believe (well, I can) that Ruby was only in one fight onscreen. They really need to figure her fighting style out.
Oooohhh!!! I'm so happy to see you're making RWBY content again! You are the first UA-camr of RWBY content I saw (and you and your sister are the reason I keep watching RWBY btw...), great video as always...!
I don't think I've ever been so disappointed by a fight from any medium like the irownwood gang up fight. After all that build up over season. They ended it in seconds, and stupidly nerf him, in a gang up fight!
I still count the chasing scene as a fight and it's my favourite in the volume. The sheer speed and using the environment was so good in my opinion. It showed how can they use the environment very well. Next to it Hazel vs Salem. While yes, this needed 2 more minutes but I'm okay with what we got. For the finale, god that was bullshit. Okay, JNOR and Winter vs Jimmy would have been good if it had more minutes and good team work. RWBY and Penny vs Cinder and Neo was suck and really needed to put some focus on one thing at the time. It's sad to see this and really hoped this would come out well. It's also sad that Torrian Crawford left RT because him joining CRWBY would have been good if he made the fights like how he did it in Death Battle. The guy had so many fights that can prove he can make a 10/10 fights with great cherography and amazing story telling but sadly he left and it made me cry for a bit. He's also inspired by Monty's work and yeah, that all I got to say. I hope V9 fix these problems and made an actual fights this time. Especially that V9 will release in 2022 which will provide them so much time to do.
I enjoyed the penny vs ace ops fight. I took penny's decline of ability fighting a crowd as her opponents being soldiers trained to fight together, not just a bunch of henchmen probably picked up off the street like the white fang goons were. But V8 was so disappointing in every other aspect
I got my head bitten off so hard when I said it feels like Penny is getting weaker and dumber. Og penny felt as strong as a whole team. Now she seems almost as weak as a normal student.
I'm so glad someone with an audience talked about this issue. I was absolutely disgusted by the fights in v8 and whenever I brought it up people thought I was crazy and told me I was wrong. Not even randys, people I felt mostly comfortable talking about RWBY with. And when Fatman said v8 had the best finale, I unfollowed him and became a doomer, lol.
how does RT not have a choreographer for RWBY if the show is emphasized to have action? I mean an attempt is an attempt but having no lead choreographer for 5 seasons is definitely not good for this show.
Nice review as always! I just want to ask, are you returning to making RWBY videos? After learning what you and your sister went through, I thought you wouldn’t make another video about RWBY. As much as I love your reviews on RWBY, if this is the last time you make a RWBY video, I’m totally fine with it. Sorry this was extremely long.
@@Shionfromyt your likly correct in your assumption, Monty was a animator and a choreographer so he could animate what he wanted to see... What we have now is animators likly not given enough detail in a fight. For example I can see the staff being told "animate cinder and winter fighting in the air and using maiden powers" Monty could do whatever he wanted it was his show and no one would question him but now you have animators under the thumb of the writers who can't give good direction.
Don't get me started on Misaka vs Blake Death battle. That fight was made to boost RWBY popularity. Something that the show fail to do over and over again.
Honestly the best fights in the Atlas arc was Team Rwby vs Ace Ops and Ironwood vs Watts which was last v7 and i would consider Ironwood vs Watts one of the best due to the effort i can see they put into the fight with watts counting his bullets and Ironwood also keeping track of Watts count as well a detail many miss the first time around Edit: Clover Qrow and Tryian the stupidity of the whole situation ruins the entire fight no matter how good the choreography was V8 fights is uhhh mehhhh
The ironic part about all this, is they clearly shifted focus from fights to focusing more on writing and story. So you would think that despite all these bad fight the story would have improved in comparison............ NOPE! Both the fights and writing are pretty bad now.
@@Rangerj04 Plus early on their was hope, it was rough at parts, but as you said fight scenes made the difference and their was hope stuff could improve, at this point that sort of optimism and good will is mostly gone from anyone but the most diehard Rwby fans. 8 seasons in and at least for me personally i still DO NOT care about anything in regards to these characters, i have no investment in their story, their arcs, and their goals, the 'emotional' scenes do nothing, the twists, do nothing. You are 8 volumes in and you have no emotional core. You are 8 volumes in and their are still fundamental and catastrophic writing issues (IE the entire Ironwood arcs is completely nonsensical as the writer never did the foundation to establish or JUSTIFY WHY the protagonists are right in universe. Why their plan of slamming into Salems grim armies, will work when beacon narrativly showed that it did not last time. All because in the last volume, they hid the lantern, they played cloak and dagger with the one headmaster who has proven scene and scene again to be trustworthy, and on their side.) You are 8 volumes in and their is still almost no deeper emotional or character motivations for them to be doing this outside of 'cause we need to save the world'. You are 8 volumes in and their is still no real show here, their is something, a series of narrative dot pots and squiggles that occasional amalgamate together into something similar to a story, but it quickly vanishes and you are left one again with a husk, dancing with the mask of a show.
@@njrk97 one of the things that annoys me the most with this show is that the characters dont reflect on what jinn told them, about the previous civilization, the fact gods exist. One would think they atleast have a talk about whether bringing the gods back by uniting humanity is a good idea or not, considering they killed an entire planet cause a group of warlords rebelled against them Spoiler for attack on titan season 3 It be like if Eren and his buddies finding Eren's dad's journal about his life and life outside of the island and decides to focus the fact that Eren's dad was a foreigner
@@Rangerj04 I mean basically 90% of the world changing truths or reveals that completely upheave the entire reality of the world are basically shrugged off, but don't fucking worry will make a big deal about Ozpin letting Raven and Qrow.....turn into birds. That is clearly far more important to be lingered and focused on in comparison.
You would think thou....after 8 years, after 8 volumes, if your quality was this low, you would be fired or your show cancelled BUT not at Roosterteeth where this low quality show is the highest money earner (irony) and AT&T are having trouble selling Roosterteeth cause no one wants to buy it BUT the Japanese sub of vol7 just got done 🤦. Understanding how this show is still in production and is well received by its fandom is mind blowing 🤯 Great review Twiins. It's like I actually miss the Raven vs Cinder Fight now
I'm probably in the minority but aside from the issues with poorly defined maiden powers I enjoyed that fight, it was the only fight I would call good in that volume (overall it's above average).
It just feels every fight for team rwby dont have weight, they wont die, they will most like win 99% of the time or just survive and win the next time but mostly its just winning the 1st time now, i can't feel hype for any villain fighting them because its just too obvious
That's probably why they keep focusing on other characters instead. RWBY can't die, but Qrow could, Penny could, Maria could. Why spend time watching the title team fight when the writers think killing a character is the only way to make combat (or a scene in general) impactful.
It’s like they’ve never watched an action anime before. Literally any at all. Just watch Naruto one time, Bleach, Dragon Ball, Soul Eater, Hunter x Hunter, Demon Slayer anything something at all. I know Narutos not gonna die in this fight but it’s the fact that he could that makes the fight interesting. RWBY characters have the threatening presence of a wet noodle
You don’t even HAVE to kill any member of Team RWBY to make the fights feel like they have stakes. Literally just get them really hurt, or even get scars like Weiss, Blake and to an bigger extent even Yang did. Maybe don’t give them scars every single fight, but at least have one of RWBY actually, I dunno, BLEED? If they can mess up Oscar as badly as Hazel did this Volume and it wasn’t even a fight, why can’t they do the same for our main characters? Ruby in particular is the worst offender because unlike the rest of her team, she’s ever sustained even a stab wound. I seriously hope Neo at least roughs her up pretty badly in Volume 9. And that’s kinda messed up, hoping that your main character actually gets hurt. But you know, one of the biggest reasons Ruby is hated so much now is because she NEVER really gets hurt, even when she does. Maybe if Ruby actually suffered like Oscar did, maybe she would be taken more seriously as a main character and care for her. And I really WANT to care about Ruby Rose as well as the rest of Team RWBY (maybe not Blake, she was always kinda not a great character in my eyes). I’m not asking for Ruby to lose all of her limbs and gets repeatedly bludgeoned: I just want her to actually struggle. Sorry for the long reply, but I just had to get all of this out of my chest.
@@3ds_fellgod-myhopewillneve617 Not only has Ruby hardly ever taken significant damage because hAhA aUrA but she literally doesn’t fight ever anymore. That shit is so aggravating and then when she is in fight it’s either a “not fight” or she acts like she doesn’t know how to fight at all
Thank you for doing this. I really feel that ruby is very marginal character. Now you have done a quantitative study showing that ruby was in 1 fight this volume where she didn’t swing her weapon. It would be interesting to see how many fights ruby is in per volume, compared to the other characters.
The fights being completely lackluster is a poison for a show like RWBY, since it was the fighting choreography that set it apart and the reason a lot of people watched the show in the first place. The writing itself was never really inspiring, and it just keeps getting worse. It relies on flashy graphics, not substance.
Well also the fact that RT had a huge fanbase also helped kickstart the show, since if this was made by a group with no established fanbase it would not have gain the same traction as this
imo, V8's fights suffered because, aside from being the biggest volume production-wise and also dealing with COVID, the writers had SO many narrative beats they decided to pack into Volume 8 that bled their way into the fights. This doesn't go for all the fights of the volume per se, but I think it speaks to most of them. Like, for Ironwood vs kids in Chapter 12, the episode had so much else that it was written to get to that the fight was more of an afterthought. I like the surprise twist of revealing the plan the kids came up with, but the reveal came with "less time for the fight" overall plus pairing the fight with Qrow/Ace Ops. I don't really care how good/bad RWBY's fights are tbh. It's not what I watch the show for, but I can understand people's problems with them not always being the same brand they used to be.
There WERE like a million things happening in the back half of the volume. And I think that wasn't just a detriment to the fights, but to the volume as a whole. Hopefully RT figures out that you don't need to juggle 17 plot points at a time.
@@twiinsiink Yeah that's one of my biggest suggestions for Volume 8 - add another episode to the final act so that the different plot threads can get the time they need. I think with Volume 9, with the way I've heard the writers talk about it, the crew will be able to develop it better.
I remember watching Team RWBY fighting Cinder for the first time and my intial reaction was like, "finally, the characters are actually moving more than they usually are." Then, BOOM, Yang gets eliminated from the battle and Blake was setup to make a choice that led me believe something big was gonna happen with her but all we got is a kick to the face for Cinder. Also, we had Weiss stays being MVP while also being so stupid to get dynamined by Cinder on three separate occasions and Ruby somehow have a sword fight with a fucking scythe.
It’s hard to explain but a lot of RWBY is presented like it’s a prequel rather than a sequel. Like, it feels as if things happen because they need an explanation for something that’s going to happen rather than just because it’s happening.
I get what you mean! And I think it's because of the writer's insistence on like, retroactively trying to disprove critique? Like, for example, in Volume 7 RWBY beat the Ace Ops real easily despite their title of being "the most elite huntsmen in Atlas (or whatever)". And a lot of fans complained about how that didn't make sense. So then in Volume 8, we get like 3 different explanations on how the kids were able to win (marrow saying "we were going easy on you", Ren's semblance telling him that the team couldn't work without Clover, etc). But it's not just something seen in justifying this one fight, the whole show is written that way. Making it feel like someone walking backwards and trying to cover up their tracks and clean up the path in their wake. Always tidying up behind them but never looking forward to where they're actually going. y'know?
It feels like that becuse the show is written as if this is the first time any of these characters had to deal with Salem. Your brain knows that is wrong. Ozpin has had to deal with Salem for lifetimes and Team STRQ had to deal with Salem, too. Characters like Qrow have had past experience with Salem, but he adds nothing to RWBY's education. Oz is treating team RWBY as if he has to train them in addition to discovering these "secrets" about Salem along with them, too.
Remember when Blake could fight on her own?
Basically she became what's know as the "dumbass in distress." This is where early on it's established that this character (Blake) is a well trained and competent fighter, then as the series progresses she starts getting dumber and getting put in danger more and more, and isn't confident unless her girlfriend comes in to save the day.
@@StoogesFan That’s also been reflected in her personality. She used to be moody, assertive, and willing to speak up and act on her own beliefs. Now she comes off as submissive, codependent, and simply follows what everyone else is doing.
@@mauriceisaac3646 by and large she just feels kind of “there”.

Gotta love Weiss' new signature ability, angrily point her weapon at the enemy
Plus Crescent Rose's inconsistent weight, suddenly Ruby can twirl it like it's weightless and then in her fight with Neo, she swings it like weighs 1000 pounds
Forget about the rapier. Now is a wand.
Look at how it flies in the air when she throws it at Neo. It might as well be a boomerang.
How she flailed it around in her fight with Neo reminds me of Bloodborne and how the Hunter’s Axe and larger weapons look and work when they’re swung.
@@janestarkage1 best thing they could do for Weiss is shatter her rapier into a thousand pieces. Just commit her to using Dr Strange style glyph combat and summons. It's not interesting in any way watching her use Myrtenaster as a wand.
@@lucasrobin2788 That tbh isn't a bad idea. Just the mental image of her doing that sounded cool, I could see her doing that.
At least all the hard work goes into much more rewatchable, engaging content.
you would think just by watching any action anime this concept would be so very simple
Also writing your fights around your story depends on... having.. good...writers. Which um Rwby certainly does not at the moment.
@@000Dragon50000 Yup, writing fights around your story would be the better option in most cases but it just doesn't work for a story that didn't really have one and was mostly about it's excellent and really amazing fights.
5:35. Pretty much sums up Twiins’s whole experience with the “fights” of Volume 8.

We’ve seen with the Sun and Ilia fight that if the animators were given the opportunity , they can get really creative. I remember watching a video with the specific animator, and she said she studied Monty’s animation style for WEEKS, and the fight only lasted less than a minute.
That animator has already left RT post Volume 6 or so.
@@pyrexo that sounds like she may of been one of the many lay offs post their other show genlock going way over budget
Kim Newman just revealed she got long term injury from working at rooster teeth

Volume 8 was so sad.
In Weiss case, its her dress. They are making her skate because animating that thing is hard.
Personally I felt like Penny was on a death wish the entire Volume, to the point it was really weird. Her first solution to most problems was self-sacrifice, and nothing else.
@@janestarkage1 *Then why put her in a fucking dress if you can’t animate it properly, they’ve made this mistake like 3 times already*

He's a GOOD BOI
That’s my favorite use of “kept you waiting, huh?” this far.
30 second disappointments? No need to call me out like that.
Team RWBY looks way well-trained and professionals at fighting if you look at Volumes 1-3 fights. But if you look at them in their fights in further volumes they look inexperienced.

So much for Yang’s “I may not be faster, but I’m smarter” line . I’m convinced that volume 6 fight just exist in a vacuum. She repeats the exact same mistakes she was supposed to learn from for the sake of cheap drama. What is character development?
All of the fights from Volume 4 onwards were in their own vacuums.
Volume 6 is the Vacuum they used to clean up messes from Volume 4-5
Because Yang is never wrong /s
They spent all of Volume 4 building up tons of potential for Yang, only to ignore it the second Volume 5 started.
@@supersparrowJ That same philosophy goes for Volumes 6, 7, and 8 as well.
As far as I'm concerned, Cinder vs. Penny in the arena was the best fight in the volume because of the way the structure and action of the fight reflected thier character arcs. It also probably applies the environment and character to the choreography the best in the volume. Though that's not a very high bar.
Yes we have different opinion on what is a good fight scene
I agree I also really like that fight and it’s probably the only one in the volume that I actually like
Honestly there was too much flying and talking for my liking. I never got the sense of danger that I should have felt during that fight.
Penny never care to fight Cinder lol
The thing is that Rooster Teeth do have good fight cheographers/animators - look at David Fischer who did Lucario vs Blazkien as well as Kristina Jean who does a lot of DEATH BATTLE 3D Fights. Even aftet Torrian left there's still definetly pepole at RT with a passion for fight animation. Look at Blake vs Mikasa and compare it to any fight in V8

Lucario vs Blazkien was awesome.
Genuinely don't understand how they keep making the same mistakes. Some are so basic, things like:
- Fights need to be at least 2 minutes long. If it's a finale, we expect it to be more like 5 minutes.
- Do NOT interrupt the fight so that the characters can have a conversation, or even worse, see other characters stand around
- If there are other combatants in the area, they either need to be actively fighting or have a solid reason to not be. And not 'they got hit by a single attack and sit there dazed but uninjured for the whole fight'
- Twirling a weapon is not fighting
- Flying away is not fighting

I'm having a hard time deciding whether Volume 5 or 8 was the worst RWBY volume, and this definitely helps. Also, the memes at the end were top tier
The biggest problem with this Volume’s fights is that we never got Qrow vs Ironwood and Ozpin vs Salem 😬

@@Step43099 Oh for real I really needed that conversation 😭
You know what, yeah that is a real bummer. Those two fights were even built up a bit in earlier volumes, or at the very least insinuated (like when Qrow charged Ironwood during the fall of beacon only for it to be a red herring of sorts).
@@garmadonthesensei59 Yup.

It’s incredibly disheartening when jaune on a motorcycle somehow becomes the best action scene in the volume
Every time I see any clip from the earlier volumes it makes me sad. Even the girls movements like at 12:31 show more style and personality than lately. I hope this big delay they are taking for this volume helps with the fights, cuz they were one of the best things about the show.

I feel like it won’t unfortunately. But here’s to hoping
Very good assessment of the differences between "old" and "new" RWBY's fights
Fantastic to see you doing RWBY stuff again. A great video.
THANK YOU! The fact that Yang gets one shorted by Neo in the end fight has annoyed me to no end. Yangs supposed to be the team tank, yet they treat it the exact same as the time she lost her arm for some cheap drama.
Also wow! Didn’t think it was possible for CRWBY to score lower than volume 5. Shows they never fail to disappoint.

My inner socialist screamed when I heard what they did to those graduates
I also wonder why Rooster Teeth doesn’t hire a competent writing staff. I mean RWBY post volume 4 has a lot of plot holes I can make into a long list. And a lot of people said that Castlevania Nocturne, Hell’s Paradise, Teen Titans Go, Family Guy, Drawn Together and Chainsaw Man were bad. At least those shows were fun to watch.
YAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
... yaass
@John King I agree, there’s a huge difference between fodder White Fang members and the (I use this term loosely) best huntsmen in Atlas.
@@johnking9943 it’s still crap.
Certainly didn't help that 3/4ths of team RWBY spent half the volume sitting in a mansion.

Twiins: I give up, I won't talk about RWBY anymore.
Twiins:
Also, memery aside, let's get technical about fights. In my very bullshit opinion, there's generally three types of fights you can have in a show:
-Brawls, which are fast-paced but long, and tend to be the most brutal, with the characters just beating the fuck out of each other until one of them stops crying, with the characters using a good combination of attack and defense to break each other; they tend to be very physical and up-close.
I would argue fights scenes can be broken down into three different categories:
Spectacle fights that are there either because they make sense or are suppose to impress the audience with the atmosphere, choreography, and characterization, storytelling fights that are just as much about moving characters further in their personal journey as they are about the fight itself, pretense fights where the actual fight is secondary to the message the scene is trying to convey.
@@fightingmedialounge519 That is another good way to go about it. I'd say that in your system, the fights in RWBY tend to go towards spectacle, with them moving in later volumes towards... Spectacle, that gets often interrupted with exposition or dialogue.
@@vicentetemes5793 rwby, much like most of the show, seems to be melting pot of all three action scenes frameworks.

Me: Yes! Whether this is a one time thing. It's good to have you back.

A new Twiins video, and I'm in class and can't watch it all at once T-T
All kidding aside, I'm glad to see you back - I've always really enjoyed your RWBY videos, and was sad when you retired from discussing the show, so this is a very, very welcome surprise! I hope to see more from you, and I can't wait to watch the rest after class!
EDIT: And now having watched the video and thoroughly enjoying you ripping RT a new one, I think it's safe to say the only thing of value in the volume was the Hound.... aaaaaaand they killed it.
The Code:Ment bit at the end was wonderful. Your editing is top notch
I'm pretty sure cinder was introduced during volume 2.
@@fightingmedialounge519 Cinder appeared in Volume 1, Chapter 1. She made her first full appearance at the end of Volume 1 to chastise Roman.
Once again the team in charge of choreography show their preference for single flashy moves that don't connect rather than actual combos/skirmishing (Ren is now a ranged fighter/marksman now???)
The thing that annoys me the most is that whenever Ruby is on screen, you can tell they do everything they can to make sure Ruby doesn't get to fight lmao.

The fights for the eighth volume of RWBY were done by those who remained.
OMG a RWBY video!? Did I step into the twilight zone??? I SO PUMPED TO WATCH!!!
So happy your back tell them how it is, we deserve better!!

Glad you're back! What a frustrating volume. I can't believe (well, I can) that Ruby was only in one fight onscreen. They really need to figure her fighting style out.
These end edits are killing me 😂 😂!
And the top dog remaining in first place with 8 fights, 8 1/2 points and a 106% goes to volume 2

While I disagree with your score for the gang vs ironwood I’m just happy to see you talk about rwby again
She doesn't have to use those Maiden powers to win that fight. Penny also overpowered without them.
I got my head bitten off so hard when I said it feels like Penny is getting weaker and dumber. Og penny felt as strong as a whole team. Now she seems almost as weak as a normal student.
Neo being able to one shot Yang is some of one of the most unbelievable things about this season.

The ironic part about all this, is they clearly shifted focus from fights to focusing more on writing and story. So you would think that despite all these bad fight the story would have improved in comparison............ NOPE! Both the fights and writing are pretty bad now.

@@Step43099 the main characters of that series end up getting the absolute shit beaten out of them, Team RWBY walks away (relatively) unscathed.
It would be interesting to see how many fights ruby is in per volume, compared to the other characters.
The illuminati clip at the end killed me lol
The fights being completely lackluster is a poison for a show like RWBY, since it was the fighting choreography that set it apart and the reason a lot of people watched the show in the first place. The writing itself was never really inspiring, and it just keeps getting worse. It relies on flashy graphics, not substance.
Well also the fact that RT had a huge fanbase also helped kickstart the show, since if this was made by a group with no established fanbase it would not have gain the same traction as this
PFFT! LOL. That last clip, oh my god.
imo, V8's fights suffered because, aside from being the biggest volume production-wise and also dealing with COVID, the writers had SO many narrative beats they decided to pack into Volume 8 that bled their way into the fights.
Looking back on it some of the fights had good (keyword here>>>>)immediate(
It’s hard to explain but a lot of RWBY is presented like it’s a prequel rather than a sequel.
Always tidying up behind them but never looking forward to where they're actually going. y'know?
@@twiinsiink that last bit sounds like what they did in regards to Adam.
