A friend of mine gave me this record in 1986, I played it once and thought bleuch; and there it sat in my collection, untouched and unloved. During lockdown I was working from home and playing a lot of albums everyday. Eventually I decided to dive in. Maybe I had been too young to appreciate it and your comment that it was challenging in places is spot on. Needless to say, I instantly loved it and now it makes regular appearances. Finally.

As much as I love Neil Peart (I saw them live 6 ti,es between 1979 and 1985 - their best period im my mind), I hate it when people call him the GOAT. There are drummers that are as good, if not better, in rock or jazz. On this album Carl Palmer demonstrates that he is one of those very special drummers. I saw him three times, and it was a feast for drum lovers.

Thank you Jim, for a lovely listen, it's not my favourite ELP, but it is still amazing.
The Toccata is my favourite piece on it.
Originally Ginastera was far from keen on having his piece covered and refused. Then Emerson went to see him in Berlin, where he lived at the time and played the recording, after which he did give his permission.
Below the original piece, 4th movement of Ginastera's 1st Piano Concerto:

ELP's live album, Welcome Back My Friends ti the Show That Never Ends, was recorded during the tour that featured the Brain Salad Surgery album. I was fortunate enough to be a roadie for a day for one of their shows on the tour back in '74 when they toured college campuses and hired students to help the roadies. The show was in quad sound and that end bit of Karn Evil 9 was so cool going round and round the coliseum and ended in an explosion. If you've ever seen photos of Keith Emerson's large, tall-standing moog then you would have seen the 'computer' come to life at the end of Karn Evil 9 as wings sprouted from the sides as if the 'machine' was alive...and then exploded. Very cool indeed. BTW, as a roadie we had to arrive by 6am and didn't leave until the 3 trucks were loaded about 2am the next morning. In return we got a seat of our choice, an ELP t-shirt, a McDonalds meal and $20. It was so worth it from a student's point of view. Gave me a healthy respect for roadies. At least I didn't have to help with the PA gear in the rear sections of the coliseum. :)

The Moog sounds you commented on were somewhat state of the art in 1973-74. The bass line was played on a Mini Moog by Keith Emerson's left hand while Greg Lake switched to lead guitar from bass guitar. The sound was created by probably 2 oscillators set on saw tooth wave settings slightly detuned from each other for a "Fatter" sound, ( slightly out of phase) plus whatever filter/envelope setting he was using. The lead Moog during many parts of the song was from his giant Moog console, but also probably using saw tooth wave oscillators slightly detuned, giving almost a trumpet type of sound. By contrast, a square wave would sound hollow like a reed/clarinet, and a rectangular wave would sound narrow and nasal, like an oboe.
I learned my first intro to sound synthesis on a Mini Moog. But how you tailor the sound with its envelope (attack, decay, sustain), and the high pass filter to add or cut overtone frequencies was all part of it. It was analog (voltage controlled keyboard), monophonic (one note at a time), and each sound had to be programmed separately. Eventually, they became polyphonic (chords), digital, and hundreds of preset sounds created by lab technicians. But some people still like the Mini Moog in their stage setup, i.e. Rick Wakeman of Yes. Another synth company, Arp, made a soloing unit with some preset sounds for quick access. It was used by Tony Banks of Genesis back in 1973-74 on Selling England by the Pound and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.
I understand Robert Moog had supplied Abbey Road Studios with a prototype Moog console. George Harrison and Paul McCartney liked experimenting with it, and it was used for background melodies on Here Comes the Sun and Maxwells Silver Hammer. But I credit Keith Emerson with first making the public take notice by taking a smaller Moog console out on the road, using it in concert. But until he became familiar with constant sound changes required in real time, it was often out of tune, but produced some interesting electric sounds.

First impression speaks for itself though I've always wondered what happens with the virgins and the mule. Do they fight over who gets the only shoe or what? (Don't reply) Second Impression I found difficult to appreciate aged 14 but has since become my favourite. It starts very 'old school' jazz but even then points to the future, the Caribbean and Mexico all at the same time. Next part is almost classical in nature - you mention the tango and if you told me that it was also a Ginastera adaptation, I'd believe you. It finishes at a rush with virtuosic playing that ties it up nicely in a gaudy bow. Barely a pause before we get the third impression and this time, aged 14, I loved the computerised voices and space-battle stuff (this was pre-Star Wars/Space Invaders remember) The wicked stereo panning at the end also blew me away. It might be a little old-hat now but the song as a whole is still wide-screen magnificence. A masterpiece of 70s progressive rock. Also worth checking out is Rachel Flowers' piano only version of Second Impression though I think the earlier UA-cam video from when she was about 16 is no longer available. Astounding player.

Despite what you said, I think you ARE getting it when it comes to ELP, Jim. The important thing is to take the rough with the smooth and keep in mind that they were first and foremost entertainers - hence the jarring mix of provocative classical interpretations, ballads, novelty songs, jazz freakouts and sci-fi madness on this record. They were a three man variety show in rock band form. Is it all equally good? Of course not. But it's all vital to ELP's identity. For all they were accused of being pretentious, I think in some ways they were as earthy and unpretentious as prog ever gets.
Anyway, Karn Evil 9's a classic whichever way you slice it and I'm glad you've finally tackled it. Ignore the idiots and keep doing what you do best, Jim!

  • @Tarkus_
    @Tarkus_ 6 місяців тому +1

Arguably their best album, despite it being all over the place musically, as well as in quality. It almost doesn't work as an album, because there isn't much flow to it (save for the Karn Evil 9 epic), but the highs are so high, and even the lows are good. Highlights for me are "Toccata" and "2nd Impression," even though Greg Lake is one of my favorite vocalists. I just think those are two brilliant instrumental tracks.
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but the development rights to Karn Evil 9 have been sold to potentially adapt it into a movie. I have doubts it will ever happen, but it would be pretty cool if it did.

Second impression is my favorite part of this album. I was just getting into Jazz in 1978 when I bought this album (to flesh out my prog collection from just Yes and King Crimson) and really appreciated the musicianship in the Second Impression since it was not very rock, or even prog. I also loved the second part of First impression starting off with "Welcome back my friends" since it came just as you flipped the album over and was obviously a little wink at the listener.

It is hard to convey the effect that ending had when they performed it for over 250,000 tripping fans in Charlotte, North Carolina, about 3 miles from home, back in 1974. I had come back from hitching America just because of the concert, which also featured PFM. In the flat middle section of the speedway were four towers, each with huge speaker systems. Quad was brand new. I was pressed against one for a fair portion of the day. It was now night. And that ending went from one corner of the speedway to another and another and another, and when it ended, there were huge fireworks. It was like really far out man. Here is a song I made for your channel today. ua-cam.com/users/shortsuXGZdmzb2Xc

I remember that my brother-in -law gave me the free Flexi disc from the NME , this made me buy the album early 77, before the dreadful Works 1 came out. It blew my mind as a 15 year and never took it off the turntable for at least 3 years .
47 years later down the line I still love the album but the recording wasn’t fantastic and a bit tinny tbh.
I now hate Tocatta ,dreadful, and I feel Karn Evil 9 1st impression part 2 has now unfortunately been played to death. Jim I’m surprised that you haven’t heard this iconic album in over 50 years, nevertheless a great review!

Just as I remembered it - lots of sublime musical stretches with really forgettable vocal-led sections. That Hammond-led jam in the last 3rd of Third Impression is phenomenal and then it gives way to those morse code cliches before Greg breaks into some light opera at the end. Parts of Pirates were like that too. And this from the guy who sang Epitaph and 21st Century Schizoid Man.
