    What about adding more butter and preheating the cast iron skillet and pouring the batter directly into the hot skillet? That should provide a nice, crunchy crust.

    Here's a tip for you. If you're allergic to milk, or lactose intolerant, use eggs , or egg whites instead of cheese. Trust me, it works. Just so you know I prefer cheese, but eggs work pretty well. I'd suggest adding some salt and maybe black pepper to the eggs before baking.

    When I was a child...around 6-8 years old...my best friend’s mom would make pizza for our sleepovers. She didn’t have an oven so she’d make it on top of the stove in a covered, cast iron skillet. She used Bisquick for the pizza crust and it was always soooo delicious. The crust would get so crispy and crunchy on the bottom and edges. yet it was soft and pillowy just under all the toppings. It was seriously one of my favorite things when I was little.
    As an adult I adapted her idea to my own recipe for a deep dish pizza made in the oven, in a round Pyrex, glass casserole. I also used Bisquick for my crust. After some trial and error I got it to the point where my family raved about it! It’s very tasty and an extremely hearty pizza.

      @@emmymade okay, please please Miss Emmy, I have spotted Some low carb tortillas, they are 80 calories and they are about 10 inches in diameter which would just make the perfect size pizza for me, however, please please find a recipe how to make a thin crust pizza like you mentioned using a flour tortilla. And as I said these happened to me like low carb or whatever and calorie low as well. I have never liked seriously thick Pizza dough and since I've lost 96 pounds and keep going oh, one thing I have not had is pizza which I am craving seriously. So you didn't mention if you made the pizza like that but if not, would you please make a video like that? Because the last thing I want is to make a pizza like that grab ahold of it and wants a flop to the ground because it's so thin and bendy. So I'm sure you know a way to do this. Thank you for your time and God bless.

    So, it's just a Dutch baby, yeah? But with pizza toppings. ETA: personally, I wouldn't compare this with a Yorkshire pudding as they are bigger (much taller), fluffier, and made in a hot pan with drippings or tallow. Dutch baby/German pancake usually aren't made to puff up AS much and are known to be used for both sweet and savory versions. Ask most any Brit and they'll spit feathers if you dare to make a YP that's sweet. (Emmy didn't say anything about this, just other commenters)

      @sunspot42 4 роки тому +14

      Exactly what I was thinking. This is like a Dutch Baby only savory instead of sweet, and you preheat the pan for those if memory serves.
      You can use a cast iron skillet to make a regular pizza as well. Works like a pizza steel and better than a stone, and you don’t need extra equipment. Preheat the skillet in a 500°F oven. Roll out your dough so it’s a little bigger than the skillet and flour both sides so it doesn’t stick. Pull the skillet out of the oven and set it on a medium burner. Spray with high temp oil (I use avocado). Flop the crust into the skillet and arrange it with tongs - they tend to flop over onto themselves and you don’t want a calzone.
      Add a light layer of sauce, Parmesan and or Romano, ice cold full fat low moisture mozzarella (you want it cold so it won’t split in the heat of the oven and release grease) plus any toppings that can take high heat. I recommend going easy on the cheese, altho I don’t always. Place back in the 500° oven for 3-4 minutes, then crank up the broiler and place the pizza under the broiler for 2-4 minutes until done (keep an eye on it - it can go from perfect to a greasy mess in less than a minute).
      Remove from the broiler and use a spatula to remove from the scalding hot pan (watch yourself). I place it on a wire rack or use wadded up bits of paper towel to elevate the crust above the cutting board so it won’t get soggy. Let it firm up for a moment before cutting.
      You’ll get a crispy browned crust and even leopard spotting, like from a traditional pizza oven, without all the hassle and equipment.

      With the pancake recipe this is based from, you do use a preheated skillet. You let it preheat in the oven, throw some butter or fat in and once it's melted, pour your batter.

    I don’t think cast iron skillets are a good idea for anyone not experienced in baking things because they will cause severe burns in SECONDS if you aren’t extremely careful.Using them since I was young with my grandma’s supervision, I still blistered myself many times. Probably from being left handed while my grandma was right handed. Over the years I learned to be ambidextrous because I had to adapt to the world 🌎. I love cast iron but am cautious…

    This was awesome! Due to my family's dietary restrictions, I made it with Cup4Cup gluten free AP flour and only 1/2 the salt. I also did a half recipe in a 9-inch cake pan and it turned out great! It was actually a bit bready, too -- maybe it filled up the pan a little more than in Emmy's cast iron pan. It was thin crust, but not paper thin. Next time, after baking the crust and adding toppings, I'll move it to a wire rack in the oven so it can crisp up a bit more in the middle. And, believe me, there will be a next time for this recipe! And a next, and a next, and a next....

    If you omit the herbs, that batter is the classic Yorkshire pudding that we love in the UK. It's got to be light, airy and puffed up. We also put sausages in it and bake in the oven to make toad in the hole, another British classic. It's also what our pancakes are made from, so it's a very versatile recipe. I usually eat mine with onion gravy and mashed potato, so not sure about pizza toppings.
