This happened to my great-grandfather. He lost his job as a fireman when it was found that he was not born here.
He had been brought to the U.S. as a young child and probably told to say he was born here. (An early "Dreamer".)
He served in the U.S. military in the Boxer Rebellion. After he provided his service and discharge papers, he was granted citizenship and reinstated into his job.
This gentleman certainly has been a true American for many years. I hope he gets his citizenship papers as soon as possible!

yes, but he was barely not a kid anymore, fresh from childhood, and did not know that. it was the recruiter that used those shit tactics to probably attract hundreds of foreign kids to serve in the military, by giving empty promises that they know they can then totally ignore. and now that this has showed up, plenty more such cases will pop up since they heard this story and went to check themselves, and now you have plenty of people that fell victim to a national level scam. if you are a kid and someone speaking for the WHOLE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, you will trust their word, now sure, if you are 30, you heard many bad stories and will get it in writing, however, a kid fresh out of highschool, with probably either no parents, or his parents back in the home country, they can get fooled. and it is not a side of the road scam, where the scammer ran away and you cant find him, no, it is the government allowing such tactics to be used to attract hundreds of foreigners to give them the "dirty work" for empty promises.
Unfortunately you're 100% correct.

I had plenty of foreigners in my OSUT class. If you want citizenship you usually have to do the paperwork there or while you’re in the force. This guy took a pinky promise from his recruiter and did nothing for the entire duration of his contract.
Five years to become an American citizen, for a non-citizen. For a foreigner married to a U.S. service person, it takes only 3 years. At least, that was the case for me and my oldest son, who automatically became a naturalized U.S. citizen when I became a naturalized American citizen.
I know there is paperwork to fill out when you apply to become a naturalized American citizen. Then you get a schedule to take the Citizenship test, and if you pass the test, you get scheduled for swearing in. It was the proudest event of my life for I always wanted to be an American.

But you only hear about the VA when there is some scandal. It isn't scandalous that St. Hedgefund overcharges you or that St. Elsewhere doesn't care if you live or die. Not only is the VA the only hospital system in America that is professional enough that they should be allowed to work on live patients, they're also cheaper because they don't have any billionaires squeezing profits out of the system. It should be a crime for St. Hedgefund to perform an operation because half the time they butcher the patient.
