A wonderful collection of tips John. Autumn is both an easy but difficult time of year to capture effectively if that makes sense. I think these tips will help a lot of people overcome some of the common difficulties encountered. Thanks for sharing 👍
Hi Alex, thank you very much. I really appreciate that. I stopped getting alerts for yours but keep an eye out. You are doing so well, I'm really pleased for you. All the best.
It's good to get advice and tips from you on this subject, thanks! Seems like everyone in the UK, Europe, and the US has been having amazing Fall/Autumn colors this year! Even here in N Texas, we rarely have great color this time of year, but we've really enjoyed it this year. Unfortunately, every time I've had the chance to get out, the light has been awful. Also, our local woodlands were flooded multiple times over the Summer and early Fall which left the trails full of debris from gushing creeks and displaced the snakes, we've been warned not to walk the trails, I tried one day anyway (I have snake boots) but there were dead fish all over the trails and it was just gross, ha! I've really missed the woodland this season.
Thank you Liesl. Yes it seemed to be a good one. It was a struggle to get out this year though. Thankfully not due to snakes. I didn't know snake boots were a thing. I just googled creeks in North texas and photos of alligators came up. The most dangerous thing we have here are rabbits. I'd love to see what the creeks look like if you could do a video that would be brilliant.
In our area, we don't have a problem with alligators, but just east of us they do, every place here has some sort of danger LOL It's like, you have to trade snakes for bears, or poison ivy for ticks, and so on. Take your pick of something scary wherever you go in the US! We have lots of creeks, but unfortunately in just about every place you can not get right up to them, either everything is overgrown and not safe to walk by, or the banks are so steep you can't get down to the creek. And we have no waterfalls anywhere for hundreds of miles, just a few small man-made ones. There might be places that I just don't know about to walk safely by a creek, but by all my local go to places, it's not possible. Also, usually the creeks are not flowing with any kind of interesting speed, like rivers. Except when there is flooding, then they can be dangerous, people can drown by getting swept away in creeks because if there has been heavy rainfall, even miles away, they can rise quickly. But, yes, I would love to do a video sometime and show you more of what our woodland looks like as well as the creeks I can get somewhat close to. You're lucky that you don't have snakes and dangerous animals where you roam, honestly, I have to watch my every step if I'm out in nature here, the only place where I don't have to worry too much is our botanical gardens, but even then, fire-ants have attacked me there, oh it sounds terrible doesn't it? It's not quite as dramatic as it sounds :)
Haha! It’s not too bad, many more good things than scary things really. Perhaps I’m more of a scaredy-cat than most people too. But, soon I will post photos and video if I have it of my scariest encounter in the woods. I just have to finish this video I’ve been working on for the past 4 weeks 😄
Great tips all. In my area of the US, leaves are pretty much gone now. One tip you didn't mention is to use the late afternoon light to enhance the color. I found since the sun is lower in the sky, the light is at a shallower angle and more diffused in mid afternoon. From then until the shadows overtake the scene, the light really helps enhance the colors.
Very enjoyable video John, thank you. Sadly, I’ve missed the autumn this year as I’ve just spent 5 weeks in hospital. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get out again soon. All the very best.
Oh bugger, I really hope you are on the mend. Thank you very much. I didn't get out as much as I wanted but at least I got something done. All the best.
Nicely done John, you got some lovely shots, just recently got back from the Birks in Aberfeldy, literally sat on the same rock you took your shot from.
Thank you very much Andy. I really appreciate your comments. It's a bit late as I had some audio fails on the first two tips so had to redo it indoors but I wasn't happy about it so nearly didn't post it. Hopefully it'll still be relevant for next year.
Just watched this while sitting in the car park waiting for you to turn up for our collaboration looks like you just coming now lol great colour images mate

Ooh, I think I'll just stop here then and watch your videos. I get upset when things try to kill me.

Excellent, I'll look forward to that. The scariest things we encounter in the woods here is a flasher.

Thank you very much. Darn it! I forgot about that. I'll add it to next year's video. And i may even get it out before all the leaves have gone.

Thank you Douglas. I hope you got a great photo and had a wonderful time.
Some cracking tip there, John, and a cracking wood. Not much colour left around Leeds at the moment :( Cheers.

Thanks Paul. Today was a fun day.
Good tips but that is a funny looking sheep !
Thank you very Steve. It was odd wasn't it?
Just found your channel! One comment straight away (because it is your first tip) - please learn to spell Trees (not Tress) 🤣
You are the first person to notice in 2 years, clearly I don't get enough views. Thank you for letting me know, I must try harder.
