Photography in the Woods | Autumn Colour

- Опубліковано 7 вер 2024
- I continue north on my landscape photography road trip through Scotland and escape the foul weather of Glencoe for the more sheltered woodlands of the Cairngorms National Park. The autumnal colours are peaking and I manage to find isolated trees full of golden yellow leaves to photograph. With my camera I try to capture the beauty of the Scottish outdoors in Autumn.

Thomas, you are the most calm and relaxed guy I have ever come across. Nature has been very kind to your soul.
Alternate opening: "Be vewwy vewwy quiet. I'm hunting ... compositions. Hehehheheh!"
Nice one!
Love the silent introduction, the drone shot and the yellow trees. You are a amazing storyteller.
Thanks a lot. Glad you liked it.
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto Seriously, though, I'm not that much into landscape photography and as a new year's resolution I want to get less input on gear, composition, editing, you name it, to challenge myself come up with things, but I still like watching all of your videos because the way you describe a scene or picture, even before showing the final shot, is so incredibly mesmerizing. I don't know any other UA-camr that can paint with words like you do, it's definitely your unique selling point.
Its incredible how much effort you put into filming, setting up the shots of yourself and in the edit. I think in a way thats as impressive as the photography.
The UA-cam thumbnail makes your 5D look like, well, a flaming caNNon.
Drone work was perfect. Follow the yellow leaf Rd.👍
Oh yay, I'm not the only one that noticed that :D

These videos are so well made! So calm and such an inspiration, almost meditation!
It’s very peaceful
The thumbnail preview image for this video in my feed gives the appearance of flames coming from your camera lens! How could I not watch it. No flames but gorgeous foliage. Wonderful video. Thank you.
Probably my favourite location in Scotland. Just feels like home. It’s magic. Big fan of the yellow trees as well.
I really enjoyed this video. In northern New England in the US, we have larches, a small primitive pine tree that is deciduous. So, in the fall its needles turn yellow before dropping off. I also loved the grasses in the ripply water.
I love how complete your videos are. So many great cuts and amazing b-roll. Awesome.
You know it is almost 3 years or long since i have been watching your video and all i can say is that, i feel can your videos . Even with my eyes closed i can see what you are doing in your video. And that's what makes you what you are. Thanks for being a UA-camr and a photographer at the same time.
Very nice, calm and considered video and photography
Thank you Tom
STUNNING SHOTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another yellow tree, who cares, it is a particularly nice tree so I think it's a very worthwhile subject, I would have photographed it too due to the situation. Woodland photography is very good for the soul. Great video Thomas. I've said it before, wellys are a great accessory for the landscape photographer actually many photographers!
The area with the grasses sticking out of the water already looked like a painting in the video, so it's no surprise that it ~really~ came together in the photo. Had I been in your shoes, I think I would've gone for a second shot with a longer lens having the brightly lit trees in the center-right filling the frame, 'cause they're so damn beautiful. Thanks for another great video!
Hello Thomas, I follow about 60 landscape vloggers but your's is my first go - to! I also learned one or two new things from you on this occasion, so that's a win-win! I also think it is time for another review of your campervan. What and how many changes/improvements have you made since purchasing your van from the workshop. And... if there was anything else on your wish list what else would you add to the van for the benefit of the traveling Landscape Photographer. Thank you, for sharing your skills with us...
Love the fact a Small tree can have a Huge presence.
Love the picture with the grass coming up through the water.
I love visiting theses awesome areas. Pictures are a bonus.
A video of nuances. Love the little details that make the bigger picture. Thanks Tom, loved it!
I have to say that I am enjoying this very quiet technique of vlogging. I really feel like I am there with you, in the moment. That is minus the rain, wind, snow, and cold of course.
you are a gift to us all :)
Wow! the Scotland scenery is so beautiful. Great images, too!
Silence is golden...
Your photography of trees makes me think about parallels in bonsai. Colour, movement, choosing the best 'front', considering negative space. Love the content as always.
Love the drone pull back shot T-heat.
God I would LOVE pine forests like this! Many small pine forests around here have been cut down because the trees are worth a lot of money. It really make me sad. Some of me favorite photography spots have been destroyed.
You continue to just absolutely *crush* your B-roll game. Great job! The production quality of your videos just keeps getting better and better. Honestly, it almost pulls me out of the narrative thread because I know it's just you out there! Thanks for making the effort. I hope it's as rewarding for you as it is entertaining for us!
Your second image are simply stunnig!!!
Great video. The first 3 minutes are awesome, the silence, the sounds, the preparation. Well done!
The pull away shot from the tree + noise cancelling headphones = wow!
Squarespace has added a goood feature. In your website you can add a purchase button so people can buy from your website.
Serene n peaceful !
Fantastic fall colours ..
Nice video ,, keep inspiring .
I'm loving the ambient sound quality of your new videos.
I like the new video format. A nice balance of talking and enjoying the sounds of nature. Some good work on this one.
Winter camping and snow, let's hope so.
nice shots Tom, I love the addition of the drone transition at 2:45, especially in the woods
Been watching you videos for a long time and I have to say they are better than ever.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one Thomas. All very relateable / recognizable stuff. Looking forward to you camping adventure in the next video!
I just love the imagery in this one. Great work! Really peaceful!
I do love the autumn colours in the UK. Bliss
Whilst still retaining your compositional style throughout your time on UA-cam, i feel your processing style has evolved so much during that time especially with scenes such as the first shot in this video. That darker processing allowing for more focus on the main subject makes the shot, but I'm not so sure you'd have approached it the same way a couple years ago. I've heard it said before that the style of processing can be affected by a person's mindset/mental/emotional state; so my question is, and this may become an idea for a future video for you, those shots you've taken in the past, however happy you were with them, if you revisit the raw files now, without using the original processed image as reference, would you process them in the same way? Loved this video, and look forward to the next one! 👍
Dan
I love the fact that you walked around for hours yet didn't find a composition. So relatable!
Love these images Thomas, looking forward to next week's video, hopefully you get some snow too!
Are you going to go back to Canada this winter for some more shooting? You should explore the woods in northern Ontario, they are beautiful and filled with history from back in the ice age days
Brilliant.
Wilderness camping, sounds wonderful!!
Jelous as.
Absolutely beautiful woodlands
True Mister Heaton
So easy. So beautiful.
oh my AMSR. Thanks for the calendar. I like it a lot.
Got to love the Cairngorms! If you can - go to the Cairngorm Hotel - Great place for food and/or pint.
Dean we were in Aviemore for 4 nights a week ago and spent all of them at the Cairngorm Hotel - excellent roasts and ales!
When I saw your thumbnail I thought I saw camera/lens spitting fire. Great video !
At least you can see the wood for the trees. I'd love to see some Scottish mist in amongst those trees and early morning sun rays breaking through.
Really love that image of the grasses in the loch. I think it's one of the best I've seen from you for a while. Just perfect.
Favourite two evenings of the week Wednesday and Sunday
This was a great video. I loved how you walked through the process of composing the image. I find that to be extremely helpful.
Awesome show ....
Thank you
Another fantastic episode Thomas, lovely image capture in the woodland. Looking forward to next weeks episode. Also, I agree SQUARESPACE do a great job providing the tools to make a website, I love mine! Cheers.
Listening and watching you photograph the tree... seems like a scientific process. Every aspect analytically plotted out. I couldn't come up with an image if I did that.
Liked so much! Liked the whole video! Absolutely gorgeous photos and woods, and you Thomas, perfectly fill this silence of the forests. Just pleasure to watch. Thank you so much for the video and wish you good luck!
Only halfway through and loving the video already, must be because you are in Scotland.
Thanks Tom.
Some lovely scenery.
I've been watching your videos from sometime. I really like them
What a well done video. I stopped and laughed quietly to myself thinking "damn" when the shot of the tree from the drone started pulling back - man, what a close to a great opening sequence and story. So well done, man!
Enjoyed the video and looking forward to the next one!
Such a long time to see your drone footage again! Love that, please keep it in your every videos
Managed my own little yellow tree a week or so ago. To me, it was a photo that I couldn’t NOT take! Great shot as always.
Can't wait until this weekend I will be camping at Mohican memorial State Park with very cold temperatures and my cameras in hand
Only halfway through the video, but im loving it! Great stuff Thomas! Beautiful Broll!
Two very great images. The last one was my absolute favourite! So darn beautiful!
Hey Thomas, fantastic video as always, and always very inspiring. We stay over in Aberdeenshire on the eastern side of the Cairngorms National park, you are always welcome to stay at ours if you ever travel or have the inkling to come this side to Grampian. As an Astrophotographer the Cairngorms is my playground but at night...which can be fun camping in winter 3000ft up in snow and in -16 degrees. keep up the great videos. Cheers, Simon
Brilliant video Tom nice calming intro 👍 2 beautiful images also 👌 Hope you managed to find your way out the maze 😉
You've inspired me to go take a photo of a red maple. No yellow trees where I'm at.
Very good work throughout great images - nice fly-over with the light breaking through. A+ Best wishes!
Your videos always relax me man. Also inspire me to go find the clean and "minimal" image.
I am not much a fan of the cold time of the year, but anyway, somhow I find myself walking arount the woodland more in this time, than in summer! There is something special about the wood when the winter is coming, which drags me in!
Your video very much reminds me of that feeling and that mood! I hope soon, I find time again for a bigger walk in the area, where the trees gather together! ;-)
Thanks for that video!
Backwards flight wow, I feel to watch Adam Gibbs. Mr. Thomas G. Heaton, are you catching up on your past? 4. reason it is a single tree. nice and simple. what else ? nothing. the second picture you took, sends me more information to 1/10 sec. so the wind move the water but not the gras. And I like the unfocussing into b-roll. good for nature.
I know you have to mix it up and stuff but it’s been really nice seeing some old school Thomas Heaton style videos. Simple but with high production value, that pull back reveal early on was very slick.
With winter coming, could you please give a list of coats, gloves, socks, etc that you use to stay warm on those below zero hikes and shoots?
Another great vid. Great shots love the 2nd one!
great 😍
super relaxing way of making a video :) i like it! And btw awesome shots and colors! Always very interesting, how other photographers work. Cheers! :)
your videos are so wonderful put together and edited that it looks like you have a camera crew with you. It's a joy to watch 😁
like your new video style!
some weeks ago I waited the whole afternoon for a similar photo of a lake during sunset... and 5 seconds before pressing the shutter the sun disappeared behind a tree on the top of the opposite mountain and never came back. :)
Beautiful piece of footage 2:45
@Thomas, the X-T3 is a fantastic camera, but you should definitely try 14mm f / 2.8 and use Capture One Pro for post processing.
Stunning photo keep saying am gonna get to Scotland for some photography myself
This video made my day. Thanks Thomas!
Not sure where you are right now but careful of the flooding!
I am quickly becoming a real fan of taking pictures of trees and forests.
Whoo Hoo! A great yellow tree. Waa-ta. Not Wa-TER like we say. LOL He's so good at this why not roll with it. And a lucky shot like those reeds in the waata just make easy.
Thanks for all great videos, sorry to see these industri forest, think that this forest soon will be harvested again, in Sweden we soon only find real old forest in nature reserve, that's so sad. Keep up the good work. 👍
Great video
Look behind your left ear at 08:56. Nice yellow tree. I sit and wonder if you saw that one ???
Lovely video! Great images too as always!
Lovely vlog Tom, don’t feel bad for shooting the yellow trees lol I really like the way you composed the first shot! Does exactly what it says in the tin!
Don't forget your hat for ticks. I know I know. I have a thing about ticks. 🐼👍🏽🥂
Very enjoyable video, really like the shot of the loch. My local woodlands in Essex are looking stunning at the moment.
At first glance at this videos thumb nail, I thought you were using a flame thrower, lol. Loved the pacing of this video
