The windows opened upwards and could be attached to the ceiling for each window. I'm a hunter but I'm not into taxidermy. I wouldn't be too surprised if the deer had been from close to this country home. I enjoyed the turn of the century bungalow touches of built-in cabinets and fabulous wood trim. There are some really fine craftsmanship in the stairs, wainscotting and crown molding. I also like the electrical sconces in many of the rooms; not too many years before they would have been gas lights, nice architectural throwback! The servant staircase landing upstairs had built in cabinets for linen and staging areas for items coming up and going down to the other floor--very smart design.

      While he was showing us that room and commenting on the "trophies," I flashed to my impish cousin. My dad belonged to our local Moose Lodge (played on the "Dartball" team) and when my aunt, uncle, and my two cousins visited during an annual Christmas party, Cousin Jerry, kept joking about the mounted moose head, a standard feature of a Moose Lodge hall. We ate popcorn out of those pleated paper containers, like large fluted cupcake baking cups. I went back for something else to eat and when I came back, Jerry had climbed up on a chair, put the popcorn "dish" on top the moose's head like an old-fashioned page boy or French soldier, and stuck a used cigarette butt in its mouth. I tried not to snigger while feeling like Doom was on its way! Trophy, indeed. Stay safe.

I gave the chairs away. They were so old I had to keep gluing them back together. The toilet placed in a small hall surprised me. The furniture in the basement saddened me. The old beer dispenser has mold on it. I love this house too. Not a fan of second floors as I get older but I would have to tell myself "too bad " to be able to live in this beauty.

    It’s a home like this that I would rather live than the house I live in now. Real beauty is in the workmanship of old homes. They were built by men to stand the test of time, storm, and in some places, even war.
    Kappy, your excitement in finding the former maid stairs was so sweet.
    History: When this home was built, people detestably known as servants were in this century known as maids, butlers, valets, nannies, and paid for their services. No, they weren’t paid a grand sum, but they were paid.

    When I moved into my 100 year old Craftsman home 6 years ago, it was in a very similar state as this one. I spent 3 days cleaning and moved right in. I’m guessing grandpa passed away and the family lives somewhere nearby; somebody definitely keeps an eye on it. My place had that same tidy “boxed up” look and that was the story with it.
    Beautiful home.

    I think the tiny “water closet” bathroom with the staircase was added later on. It was probably just a little hall with a staircase. The woodwork in this home is astounding. Such a decidedly masculine home. The wood used and the stairway and bannisters are truly impressive! So much seems original; what an impressive find. Thank you for this exciting explore.
    The desk in the entry hall had tongue and groove construction in the drawers. That has got to be an antique that needs to be reclaimed and restored.

Talking about the windows and how wide the ledge is, it reminds me of the house we had in Valmeyer, Illinois, it was 3 brick thick! I would imagine this one is similar to that! What a terrific house, Kappy! I can imagine people from "The Great Gatsby" having this as a vacation home. From the glimpse in your previous video I had an idea of the interior of this house but it was even better than I imagined.
    Here's my theory: the toilet by the servants' staircase may have been installed after the house was built, maybe long after, for a resident who had difficulty getting around. I noticed a track along the staircase for a mechanized chair that would take someone up and down who would otherwise be unable to use the stairs. My grandmother who had a heart condition had two of those chairs in her house: to the upstairs and down to the basement. In this house you can see the chair in a folded up position at 6:48. A "machine chair" , as we called it, would not have worked on the main staircase.
    The picture of over the downstairs fireplace seems to a print of a painting by Jamie Wyeth.

      Ah, thanks for confirming that my eyesight wasn't wrong. I don't remember: was there a full bathroom downstairs? It would make sense to add a "Porcelain Convenience" in an odd spot if this was one of the places where the only full bathroom was on the second floor. I've known quite a few places where this was so. Good health and stay safe.

    • @andrewbrendan1579
      @andrewbrendan1579 3 роки тому +1

      @@oldenweery7510 I took a second look: there's a toilet by the servant's staircase but I didn't see a sink anywhere in that space. I think the plumbing was added in maybe the only space where it could be worked unobtrusively into the first floor.

    • @oldenweery7510
      @oldenweery7510 3 роки тому +2

      @@andrewbrendan1579 That makes sense, especially if there was someone in the house who was elderly and/or slightly disabled. If there isn't a bathroom on the first floor---and I don't remember seeing one---maybe the little "accomodation" was added for his or her use. I'm 80 and if I lived in a large house with the bathroom on the second floor I'd be like the joke book title, "One Mile to the Outhouse, by Willie Makit." Stay safe.

      It is called an apron sink because of the flat wavy sides for drying the dishes on which makes the apron around the sink. Don't see them much anymore. Wonky bathrooms were pretty common when indoor plumbing & water came to town....closets, under the stairs or any place they could put them. Take Care.

    I adore these solid beautiful mysterious old houses! Nothing built nowadays can compare. My first purchase was a 1 and a half story bungalow built in 1920s. Loved that place with it's stucco and dark wood walls and built ins. Secret exits. Archways and old coal shite. Milk delivery door and old mail slot in the front door. If I could have afforded to move it I would have. It was the neighborhood that was the issue. Gang tagging and peeping time and people breaking in and stealing from our garage. I'd give anything to have one like that again. So much fabulous character. Thanks for the vid.🙏🎄🧡 This one is in marvelous shape. Especially being abandoned. Why? My whole fam would love this place. And don't forget the fireplace! Such a beautiful setup. Stockings hung up. My daughter called it the Christmas House.
