- In Summertime I work as a guide in the Arctic, but what does it mean to live here in Longyearbyen in svalbard / Spitzbergen how does it look like and what does it feel like to be here- that is what I want to Show in these Episodes.
Wow this is awesome. I know there is quite a number of people that live and work up there, but I never expected all the normal modern conveniences. I wish I could visit. And thanks for your videos, I love learning things like this.
I heard it's easier to meet a polar bear than a girl in Longyearbyen.
hahahaha - go & find out if that's true :D
I'm 58, they won't even look at me.
I looked through your videos. You did everything right, perfectly right. Weiteremachen!
@@Jostkobusch can anyone from any race come there? I'd like to come do some photography.
@@nyamburagathiga992 race is absolutely no issue ;)
Gotta love living in a place where carrying a rifle with you is not only ok but also expected xD
Unfortunately, the second you use it expect to be in months of paperwork and meetings. It really is a last-resort thing and, just like in a real police case, there's loads of paperwork and annoyances that go along with using it.
with using the rifle?
+Jost kobusch that's what i once read on a forum about people going to svalbard. I could be completely wrong though.
no you're right if you use the rifle for example to defend yourself against a polar bear attack and you shoot or injure a polar bear you'll have to defend yourself in court
Ah gotcha. Thanks for the info!
Tolles Video!
Do Polar Bear already scared just with loud horn?
the cracking of ice (there they live) can be very loud so they are not always easily scare by sound noise ;)
What is the general "feel" of the city: Does it feel like a small town in mainland Norway? Also, how would you describe the culture there (could you compare and contrast it to somewhere in Norway)? Thanks!
You can't really compare it to some other city - it's like a close community, if things happen- everybody will know it. I would describe the atmosphere as familiar, safe and still like an expedition. people appreciate the nature a lot and are deeply connected, students lie out on the roof the barracks in the midnight sun and you'll get to know people easier than on the mainland.
Oh it's like Storybrooke then
Hello! thank you for sharing your videos and showing us what life is like in the country at the end of the world 😃! I want to know if there is a school? I'm a teacher and maybe I can find work 😃 🤗
there is a school :)
@@Jostkobusch thank you 😊
I can't wait to shop here.... I just want some fresh fruits 🙈😁.
are you planning to stay for a longer time? :D
So what are Norway’s gun laws like what can they own I ask this because I am British and want to live in a more gun friendly country is Norway a good option ?
I Svalbard has a special law that differs from the mailand - I's recommend Alaska I heard somewhere there are more guns than people ;)
What about applying for jobs? Where can I found someone to send me permet job. It will be a pleasure if you answered me
You might find somebody in your home country that operates there and who you can contact in your home country - otherwise you could also just go there and ask around - look for the parts where your work makes a real difference -> make your strength productive ;)
I thought I was badass when I went to Reykyavik twice, but this is amazing. The only problem with living there would be learning the Norwegian language. I already speak 4 languages but I don't think I could manage a 5th one.
hahaha with english you'll get pretty far and the vocabulary is easy ;)
Wie viel hast du in € gezahlt für den Einkauf?
Hab mal nen Abo da gelassen.
ich glaube so etwa 40€ - habe aber sehr günstig gelebt zu der Zeit und günstig eingekauft :)
@@Jostkobusch toll!
Would love to move and work here. Is it easy to get a job in Svalbard ?
it's become actually quite challenging but I'm sure if you work hard on getting one you'll be able to have a good chance :)
Did you ever need to shoot a polar bear? If so, do you leave it there or take it home to make polar bear sandwiches?
As far as robbing the bank, that's what you do in Los Angeles. A big city where you drive the getaway car onto the freeway and vanish. But robbing a bank in a small/ remote town on and island. No place to run. I don't think that's going to work.
+roachtoasties -> this is a very popular question I get this asked a lot, but luckily I never had to shoot a polar bear. About your sandwiches: In some cases you can actually buy polar bear meat from these accidents in town but I have never tried it
It is evidently pretty rare that anyone has to shoot a bear on Svalbard. I have heard at most it happens a few times a year. Usually warning shots with a rifle will scare a bear off so that is preferred over shooting the bear. I dont think polar bear meat would taste to good. I have had black bear and spoken to some friends who bear hunt and it really depends on what the bear has been eating and when they are eating meat they apparently dont taste as good as when they have been eating berries.
I live in longyearbyen and I live in the red house on the left and I’ve seen a polar bear in my back yard but tomorrow it went away
Were country
Hello
wow
i enjoy watching these
+jasminhook96 thanks for your feedback- if there are any questios appearing- feel free to ask;)
+Jost kobusch Haha okay :) What is your favorite part of living in Svalbard?
+jasminhook96 it's all about the Feeling- the community and the atmosphere there... is a wild place:)
Hi my friend i went live stay in the land. But idont have home .in the svaldbard
I live in a rural area on the mainland, and the Svalbard grocery store seems to have better selection :O
hahahaha - but we only have one supermarket :D
Looks like a supermarket in Finnmark :)
Alta ?
Nice video in order to prepare our trip there. So how much was the bread?
good question... I don't remember, I will have to check, but it's quite light and airy bread, nothing solid :P
Interessant
Hi are you from Svalbard?
I'm from Germany :)
Hey mr Jost, I would like to get some info about how to find a job in Svalbard specially in the fields of aeronautic, thank you
I'm sorry I don't really know about this specific field - you should get in contact with UNIS -> the university
I see you are a man of culture as well
Im here because of geography lesson
If I'm from a random country (not norway) i cannot go there? I heard that it doesn't need any visa
Yes you don't need a visa - No matter what country you're from - you can stay as long as you are able to support yourself
@@Jostkobusch thx you so much for replying me.... Does this island have college? And a job? A house to rent? How much a house rent is (monthly)? Sorry for asking too much but I'm starting to think about immigrating there (seriously)
it has a college called UNIS -> google it ;) Well rent for a house depends on the size and I don't know the pricing except that tits pretty expensive compare the hotel prices with your hotel prices and you get an idea fro the rent !
@Craft Craft it does have a college/university (university center of svalbard or something like that?), but you can't go there and study a full on degree (you can stay for a semester or so, participate in exchange programs etc, I remember seeing once it offered some sort of biology degree, but it wasn't a complete degree
It makes a good hideout for fugitives.
First of all, thank you so much for the video. One question, is it true that if you live in Svalbard for seven years, you could get the Norwegian citizenship?
I don't know about that but you can live indefinitely in Svalbard as long as you can sustain yourself :)
Hi Jost, really enjoy your videos. I was wondering, I hear its quite difficult to get a job in Svalbard, but does that change at all in the summer with the influx of tourists and the like? How hard would it be to get a job just over a few months in the summer period? Cheers
hey - summer is definitely the easiest month to get a job, what kind of job are you looking for?
Jost kobusch Thanks for the reply :) how many jobs would be going for people with little relevant skill? I would just be looking for anything that would allow me to stay in Svalbard over the summer.
hey I would say it's like anywhere In the world - with less skills it's more difficult to get a job, be creative and do some research - then send out some applications/ better do some phone calls and try to work for food/living...
Jost kobusch OK, thanks very much, I'll keep it in mind :)
@@Mudkip550 hi mudkip550 am also interested in moving to svalbard like you ,am a very creative person and I wish I get a job while studying there ,just the cost of living scares me away but hope to survive if I get there:)
I know that supermarket...I know that place in longyearbyen downtown...I was there in september 2016...but without a gun...
cool! have you been on a trip by ship? -If i don't go hinting before or after I also don't take my rifle;)
Yes...with the Polar Girl to Barentsburg and so on! It was one of my greatest trips ever! Nice place...And, someday I will come back!
I wanna go there!
i think about moving there whats your opinion on that ? and do you think i can get a job ?
you can give it a try - if you get a job strongly depends on your skills and attitude :D
how it is the life There ?
more minimalistic than on the mainland :D
Thank you for the video. How do you heat your house: natural gas, electricity?
warm water
Any problems with the wood stock on rifle after all these years and season changes?
if you treat it well there are no problems ;)
i need you to be my guide in this winter time!
Sorry to you... can i ask you guys just one? How do i get the job in svalbard as a foreigner? Because i will consider living in svalbard if i can... and can i get not specifie jobs such as cleaner or construction assistance?
Did you move there from Germany? If so, why did you do it
I love the nature up there :)
I enjoy
Longyearbyen from 28.3. - 3.4.2018, last day go shopping in
super-mar-ket and buy a forhead flash-light. Again at home in Vienna
and see, the flash-light have construction fault - on-off button
not works.
Please
give me recommendation how can I get other flash-light. Possible send
the flash-light back to super-market and give me money back, or other
forhead flash-light.
well I din't know what lamp exactly you bought but I' sure if you send en email (better call them) you'll get the chance to ship your item there to get a new one according to the Norwegian law (I'm not sure about the details of customer warranty) keep in mind if you get a new item you'll also have to pay the shipping back to your place- my advise contact the brand/manufacturer of the product
What country is svalbard? Norway?
the spitsbergen contract says that everybody can settle down there- so there are also two Russian settlements but the main settlements and most of the population is Norwegian. So it's seen as Norwegian territory
Jost kobusch I am Russian and I can already imagine the quality of life in Russian settlements XD
You're on Svalbard and you don't know that it's part of Norway?! Legally. It's not just "considered" Norwegian, it's by law and treaty. See the Svalbard treaty, all the nations recognize Norwegian sovereignty.
What music is it? I really like.
it must be a piece from David McLeod
Looks just like Caithness. Not really but the Shetlands
0:17 let's go to the beach?
Alexander Lee vamos a la playa!
Do they go to the market everday?
no clue - i guess it more like a normal lifestyle where you go whenever you need :D
Nice the market
Of course its expensive.. everything has to be brought there
How much do you earn in Svalbard?
I'd say approximately double what you earn in central Europe
How are you are you still in Svalbard?
nope - I moved to the Alps :D
Oh ok can you recommend a place where I can stay that I can rent on a monthly basis would really appreciate it! Thank you so much!
@@gerrysantos7698 Renting right now is a challenge - my recommendation: bring a good tent and stay on the campsite :)
Oh didn't you rent a place there before maybe you can recommend the place that you stayed at before thanks
@@gerrysantos7698 I don't remember the place - sorry, you might be lucky to find something one you're there or on kjöb salt Börg (or something like that) on facebook - if you find a job it often comes with accommodation - good luck !! and have a great time :)
does the salary match the prices?
yes it does;)
i wanna go there give me some informations pls

Jost mate is ther any job opportunities in svalbard always hiring?
nicht kann bicycle ?
you can cycle there :D
hi pal how you feel to live there??
it's a special world :)
How can İ immigrate to this place?
by plane or ship from Norway - once you're there (in Spitzbergen/ Svalbard) you won't need any visa anymore but need to be able to afford a living
Hallo josh. How are you? Long time no chat.
What is the name of the most populous city please ?
Longyearbyen !
oh also, What is the minimum budget to settle down? per month
Muslim world pop. 1.8 Billion. Svalbard pop. 2,667. Stay home.
It's as expansive as in Switherland
a bit more even;)
What about Alaska?
Please mention monthly living expense at Savalbard Longyearbyen Rent food grocery job how easy it is to get a job trained while working, how to get job.
you might be able to get a job on a ship/ boat as crew and then visit companies personally - otherwise look at your skills and call the ones you feel like you match too
You’re gonna shoot a polar bear? Does bear spray work on polar bears?
I'm not sure if bear spray works, if you'll try it and survive -> send me a message :D
I thought polar bears were on the endangered species, no?
@@spoonermorte "threatened" globally, but self defense is self defense

is property expensive there in svalbard?
yes it is very expensive due to many restrictions and limitations
senzo tanaka ä
yes:P
Jost kobusch how about the population, just curious
Ivy Iv'z 2000
Ok but where do they source the food from?
Yeah...... have a guess..... Howcome could that be a mystery...???
No taxes, correct?
Wal ist nicht Wahl in translation - und man sollte darauf verzichten Säugetiere - and not fish - zu essen, es gibt eh wenig genug davon, denn sie haben ein Recht auf Leben
Is that a kar98k...?
it's an old german Mauser from world war II that has been left up there...
Deutsch und Frankreich mann leben zusammen?
If one robs a bank there how is a getaway performed? I spent time in Quetta, Pakistan in an area famous for crappy fake antique gun manufacture and hashish. My hotel had a sign that said to check your guns.
hahaha a getaway is quite a hard task here, with only 40km of roads you can't really drive somewhere so there are only two ways to leave the island- by boat or plane. The airport is tiny so everybody will notice that you're there- I'll recommend you to take a fast boat at night time but take care there are helicopters and everybody has a gun :D
Jost kobusch Next problem is banks deal in other forms of money than currency like checks and credit cards. For centuries banks have had cash assets which are a multiple of reserves of cash on hand.
Banks issue paper statements and the receivers do not present the paper demanding currency.
I knew a real dirtball who held up a bank and received a package that produced clouds of smoke. He was caught by people who observed the smoke. Latest form of money is the bitcoin which is merely bookkeeping. I visited southwest Asia and banks would send unarmed messengers with money. Exchanging currency in desolate border crossings involved men with shirts with many pockets. In Yugoslavia some men sat outside at a table and traded currencies.
I guess you’d have to bring some kind of helicopter or hydroplane to get to the mainland?
That's a pretty Karabiner 98K
it's an old german Mauser
Snake omg it's snake pliskin! snake do u wana save? lol
Where would a bank robber go?
Wahlfleisch?
Is it cold there?
around 6 degrees in summer - winter ist more like minus 20 so It's relatively warm cause it's warmed by the golf stream ;)
@@Jostkobusch 🥶
No
This is not a real town until it gets a Walmart... Anybody got the reference?
+Angel Hernandez no walmart :D
Walmart does'nt exist in norway
Real towns (ie in the non American civilised parts of the World (eg., the UK) are fortunate not to have "Walmarts""! (Pity we have MacDonalds!).
Yo, USA, please take them Walmarts all back, and most fast food with them.
Wahlmart... Walemart
those are U.S.A prices
I want to ask view tgings about visiting there
hey I don't really get it - how I can help you :D
Jost kobusch, do you have whats app or phone number that i can asked you? Thanks or email maybe
I do - but you can ask me here :D
I need a tour guide in svalbard.
I am going there in the beginning of november
If meat is such an expensive thing, why not hunt? You've got a rifle, right?
hunting is allowed only in seasons when you have visited the hunting course (or some course like that I think) and then you can only shoot one Rendier of a certain sex and age in a certain area ;)
Brah do u know how fast humans can cause extinction of species lol
Would like to hear what he is saying. Music is annoying, and too loud.
Hi Josh ... I don`t have money I don`t have future at my homeland I have 2 kids I`m 46 years with a strong body, what do u think I can come to stay and living in Svalbard and work there, I can get a job and my kids can be going to school ...Can I feel peace ... I am looking for a new life
norway is one of the most expensive countries in europe (if not the most expensive) with its own money which has a higher value than pounds and euro (which makes it even more expensive)
Salvbard, being isolated, even more so even for "normal" food or other utilities, as they need to be imported by plane from the mainland
if you don't have money, it is sincerely not for you (plus, most people there are scientist, researchers and university students, it's the easiest way to get into svalbard if you're one of those as you can even ask for grant or financial aid in some cases, otherwise it's really difficult unless you're a tourist or someone with loads of money to spare)
Walfleisch kaufen heißt Walfang unterstützen. Aber ist dir vermutlich eh einfach egal, oder? BTW man schreibt Wal ohne h (siehe subtitles)
this ain't right, you're too damn tall !
nice video ;) so plz tell me do you need visa to enter this town ?? thank you
you don't need any visa and can stay as long as you can take care of yourself:)
Jost kobusch thank you so much take care you too i'm planing a vist soon hope i'll meet you there :)
This is not true for everyone in the world (see Svalbard treaty) or in practical terms (see Schengen and Norway visa).
hey Noddy - who can't stay without visa in Svalbard?
I'd like to hear the commentary, not the thumping music....
I cannot understand why anyone would take their dangerous rifle into a supermarket?? I've been to longyearbyen and it is safe within the area of the city to walk around unarmed (especially during the warmer seasons). The rifle is for self defence, but the polar bear is respected and feared by the people on the island.
Hey as you have been to Svalbard you might know that you are not allowed to leave your rifle in the car (in generall you are not allowed to leave any rifle unacompanied somewhere) that's why coming back after a trip we take the rifle into the Supermarket to lock it there for safety reasons;)
Apologies, I never knew that.
No worries- good hat you commented on the video so I could explain it ;)
How can I find job in Svalbard plz send me official website of Svalbard
Cost of living for one month there???
From what I understand, you have to have approximately $600 American dollars a month to be allowed to stay in Svalbard, you don't have to work here, you just have to generate $600 a month. Also, there is no Social security, so, you have to work or have money sent to you. You will not be allowed to stay in Svalbard, if you're homeless or have no income, there are NO homeless on the islands.
Wal. Großer Fisch. Wal. Jup...
Halo josh
"Wal" schreibt man nicht mit h.
Auf Norwegisch ist es HVAL.....
This land same faroe land
Loos like some communist supermarket with few items.
But it also looks like a normal Norwegian super market only with fewer items
Twabourne & Louis LLP In Russia supermarkets were okay before the crisis, stop blaming communism for everything
Its a normal Norwegian supermarket lol
.
I had no idea you could own firearms in Europe?
you can
These islands are part of Norway, there are more guns in Norway than people. Plenty of European countries allow gun ownership.
Guns aren't as restricted in Norway as in the rest of Europe. Svalbard even less restricted.
@@Andreas4696 yes, for a very obvious reason...
What's the point in making people lock their rifle away in the store? If someone actually had any ill intent, they wouldn't observe the rule anyway. The only people who are going to lock up their rifle will be those who don't intend to harm anyone so it wouldn't make any difference if they had a gun on their person or not. Such a rule only ensures that law abiding citizens are without the means to defend themselves so those who plan on using a gun for nefarious purposes will be the only ones to carry a weapon. Therefore, the rule actually makes it more dangerous than if people were simply allowed to keep a firearm on their person as they shop.
That's like asking why you have to look both ways before crossing the street, with a cell phone, and claiming that it's the drivers that have to pay attention.
Probably just a policy and the secure storage makes it easier tl shop
Wal, nicht Wahl. Peinlich.
terrible video due to the music overpowering the speaking.
how it is the life There ?
